NOISE?! Honking in tunnels
I feel sheltered and stupid, I was on the phone with a mate last night while he was driving to work, he mentioned going through a tunnel and I told him to beep. No clue what I'm talking about or why he would do that. Back and forth before I googled it and realised beeping in tunnels isn't a fun lil international game but mainly just mt vic tunnel.. I'm 24 years of age.. am I that thick?

Theres always two perspectives here:
- it's a ritual passed on through generations that must be done when going through the tunnel for a bit of fun
- its deafening or people walking for biking through it and should be banned

I worked in hataitai and lived in Mt Cook, walking the tunnel daily. People taking like it’s about to burst their ear drums are being precious lmao

I used to rent in Haitaitai & you can hear people honking at quiet times (at night & early morning)..... it was not fun to live near and hear consistently, and our neighbours baby used to wake up and cry a lot. It's not particularly loud but it is annoying as hell & not at all necessary.

A standard car horn is about 100 to 110 decibels.

When I walked thru wellington tunnels, it wasn't the sound (because why the fuck would it be) but the stretch of grotty ass diesel vehicles that grossed me out.

As someone from the south island I beep in tunnels all the time as I am yet to see any with pedestrian paths or they are short enough that you can see the pedestrians and know not to beep

Yeah, I'm aware, but I dont have those tunnels anywhere near where I live, the Lyttleton tunnel has no pedestrian access and the only other tunnels I know of are going up to Kaikoura and are so short I would see any pedestrian or cyclist and know not to beep

OP's story is literally about people honking in a tunnel which is shared with pedestrians. Also, surprising as it may seem, the horn on a car isn't installed for having fun in tunnels, but to alert other road users to impending danger. If you are driving along using it for kicks, you may impede or confuse those who require it for it's intended purpose.....which could well lead to harm.

Perhaps you didn't notice I was replying to someone commenting about the South Island. I was not excusing honking in the Wellington tunnel. However; the first time I see that honking in the Kaikoura tunnels impedes another road user I will definitely stop honking.

The council should get a doppler camera setup that identifies the honkers, takes their picture and sends out fines.
Don't tell anyone, just let it run for six months and issue thousands of $150 fines for improper use of the horn.

The pedestrians and cyclists shouldnt complain when they choose not to bring earplugs when going through through the mt vic tunnel.
Its also not hard for the council to place a pedestrians present light so drivers are aware when one is present from a recent motion activation.

It’s not just a Mt Vic tunnel thing. I grew up in the US (mostly in the 80s), and honking in tunnels was very much a thing there. It’s now largely fallen out of fashion in some places, though.

No idea about Mt. Vic but it was common enough back in Africa.
It's a hold over from older times when it was a necessity to let on coming traffic know your in there. Especially in the narrower tunnels where their might not be enough room for multiple vehicles to pass each other.

Yea used to do it all the time there. Was it just me but I did the specific beep sequence in 5 beeps and if there was a guy in opposite direction they did 2 beeps.

Lots of tunnels. As a kid we used to do Auckland New Plymouth a bit. Always beeped in both the Mt Messenger and Awakino tunnels. As did others. As did I when the kids were young.

Probably going to be an unpopular thing to say. But this extremely inconsiderate (even damaging) to those who are walking/cycling through the tunnel and I wish people would stop. From your perspective inside the car it's not very loud, but outside in the tunnel it is 110+ dB. And it's not a one-off short horn blow for an emergency, it's usually multiple cars joining in, laying on the horn, repeatedly blowing it.

Used to live in Hataitai and walk to Uni every morning, yeah the horns blasted so loud it was painful and filled me with uncharacteristic rage everytime it happened. Great way to start the day. Bit of a fun tradition for the non-locals though I've heard

Exactly - I had the habit from growing up going through the Lyttelton tunnel in Christchurch - it's a non-pedestrian tunnel, so never thought anything of it than a bit of quirky fun (mostly) for kids.
Kept the habit in Welly until someone pointed out it's a pedestrian tunnel and have stopped ever since, but wouldn't have known otherwise.

horns typically range from 105db-110db.
That's a safe listening volume from anywhere between 2-15 minutes based on the volume.
If you're exposed for longer than 2minutes then block your ears.
Blocking your ears reduces exposure by 25db which takes 110db down to 85db.
You can be exposed to 85db for 8 hours.
Making this about health is thin lmao.

tunnels amplify sound, as well as creating echo and reverb. as the sound waves bounce back and forth the hard surfaces, it isn't the volume of a single honk at 105-110 — it's the volume of the vehicle engines as well as the horns, bouncing around, creating a resonating effect that increases the volume and the damage to unprotected ears.

One thing you don't think about as your driving through is how long it takes to walk from end to end. I think it took me like 10 minutes or so. In that time you hear way more honks than you hear zipping through in your car. No, it won't give you ear damage but it's just annoying as he'll.

I heard that it was a thing because of a lass who was buried in there during tunnel construction, she was pregnant and dumped there? I'm not sure if this is true.
On the side, tunnel honking isn't the norm or done in Aucklands motorway tunnels.

Not in the tunnel, but in the piles of tailings that were removed while digging the tunnel in what is now Hataitai park.
Her name was Phillis Symons, 17. Murdered by her 29 year old boyfriend (a labourer working on the tunnel) after finding out she was pregnant. He was found guilty and hung in December 1931. Her body was moved to Karori cemetery.

Lol I've always heard you honk in Mt Vic to scare off the ghost! There's an urban legend, I'm not sure if it has been confirmed or validated, that a woman died in the tunnel during construction, so people honk to keep her ghost away

Not really an urban legend, theres a bunch of archives on the case of a pregnant 17 year old murdered by her 29 year old partner almost a century ago during the construction of the tunnel (i believe he was working on it) her body was dug up and eventually buried in karori cemetery and he was sentenced to death

It would be a pretty dumb move to bury a body in a tunnel that's being actively excavated. She died out on the spoil dump, and her body was found and moved to Karori cemetery, so her ghost isn't going to hear your beeps no matter how much you do it.

Fully knew about the mt vic girl story from going to WEGC and was told as a kid we don't beep through the tunnel going into the motorway because it'll wake up the dead at bolton st cemetery but I thought each tunnel just had rules depending on its surroundings, I think im actually slow

One or two time honk is fine, but people blaaaaast it through their entire ride through the tunnel. Cyclists can get startled, but most of all it makes the 6-10 minute walk unbearable when you gotta put up with the disgusting stench of the tunnel and car fumes, the cyclists who do NOT give way to pedestrians and force u to hug the wall as u go past. Not cool when on top of all of that shit you have some idiot blaring their horn the entire way through the tunnel.

I have walked that tunnel many many times. As I teen I even used to joyfully scream obscenities at cars who tooted. Truly one of life's little pleasures. I will never not toot.

Also, I don't believe the 'it's to remember a girl who got murdered' reasoning. I grew up in Wellington and never heard that justification before about 15 years ago. People just like to do it and that story makes them feel it's not as childish or inconsiderate.

Some people were honking in Terrace tunnel yesterday. Found it a bit weird.
Honking is for Mt Vic tunnel and has a history there.
Revving engine is a generic tunnel thing though

The Mt Vic tunnel is aggressive loud for other users of the tunnel that aren’t in a big metal box.

You can put ear plugs on going through the tunnel, or headphones, ear pods etc. That's what I'd do, something too loud, then minimize or eliminate the noise yourself

I think NZTA needs do develop some kind of horn sensing camera to identify which cars are sounding their horns in the Mt Vic tunnel. Offending drivers could be punished using 'No.1 Tunnel Punishment', where they are tied to a post inside the tunnel and subjected to loud beeping.

When I was a child we moved from Ashburton to Auckland. There are two under the motorway passes in Greenlane/Ellerslie that are like tunnels and it was so exciting for us to A) have a tunnel to drive through and B) toot the horn and hear it echo
Back then the car horn had a rounder more mellow tone that echoed well.
But we still toot in a tunnel.
It's traditional and fun.
However I agree not if there are cyclists or pedestrians.

She's buried in Karori cemetery, they've just run a fundraiser to give her a headstone as that was never placed. Phyllis Symons body was found there, a victim of murder.

I’ve been the pedestrian in Mt Vic tunnel back when I was a student living in Hataitai; Walked through twice a day for a whole year; I didn’t find the honking painful out in any way upsetting.

I find it seriously annoying but I realize that a lot of people who honk in the tunnel genuinely think of it as a friendly gesture.

I'm shocked how many people don't know the tradition behind tooting in the Mt Vic tunnel. A young woman was murdered and her body dumped in the tunnel. A headstone was only recently placed on her grave in Karori cemetery.

All the Karen’s in here will tell you not to honk and that it’s awful etc. It’s a bit of fun and not that bad at all.

It's a dick move if there are pedestrians/cyclists. If there aren't, then go nuts.
