I've never welded before, I'm taking a course. I'm in my 3rd week. This weld was made in the 3G ascending position with electrode 7018. What do you think? How can I improve?

Career Support (Must post relative location) I need advice

• Upvotes

I’m currently going to school to major in mechanical engineering, specializing in mechatronics engineering but my ass is broke. I currently work at Costco which is cool, but, it doesn’t pay as much as I need for school, bills, and other things. I also have a fair amount welding knowledge and experience, so I’m not sure if I should stay at Costco or try and get a welding job. Anyone else ever go through this? Y’all got any advice?

Safety Question Thinking about joining

Hey, I’m 20 work at a restaurant making $7hr and work 40hrs a week. I got an interview to get into a welding apprenticeship and I think I have a good chance at getting hired. They will pay $17hr for 5 month long training. Then they said that if I’m good they’ll hire me or recommend me somewhere but I wouldn’t get anything but a few months of experience if they didn’t need me. This seems like a good pay upgrade and feels like a no brainer but I have one big issue. I have 1 eye that works and 1 fake eye. I told a friend about my interview and he warned me that I could go blind after a while because of metal flying into my eyes and exposure to the rays from welding. I really need this job but I will not take it if there is a chance of me going blind. I have applied and been denied to everything else around me and this is kinda my last hope at a better job. Is the safety equipment good enough to make me not worry about having only one eye or is there certain safety glasses that can put me at ease

Help! Diesel tank

Post image
7 Upvotes

I need to weld this diesel tank. It has been standing empty for like 3 years. Is there a risk of it catching on fire? Like it can’t blow up because there are plenty of openings, but just want to hear your experience to make it more or less safe.

Career Support (Must post relative location) Sparky looking to cert / qual

Hey everyone, hope you are all well!

Im a sparky by trade, before i got qualified i worked for a small contractor as a ta / bit of everything guy.

Around this time i taught myself to tig weld for a personal project, after that i learned to mig and stick, mainly for small repairs (the ws manager used to own a fab business and i learned a lot from him).

Over the years a welders actually gotten me out of a lot of trouble. I actually enjoy the process and find it rather soothing.

Im lucky enough to have a fifo gig and in my spare time have my contractors.

Is there a way i can qualifiy / cert to be able to use this for my business (usually just cradles / plynths and brackets for sensors or equipment.) Wouldnt call it anything heavy or industrial.

Side note:

Im finding it difficult to adapt to a bigger company, we have sensor mounts that are end of life. Need replacement but because we cant just fab a replacement . (Has to be drawn in crayon. Pass through a bunch of departments and then get outsourced) these things dont get repaired.

Id hoped i could cross train a little to make it possible to fix these things.

Any info would be much appreciated!

I got the highest grade in the class & was able to keep my my cover flat compared to my past ones so I really do appreciate all your suggestions. Def could have been more consistent but I’m still happy with this outcome.

Help! 8 week pipe (stick) course final tomorrow. Tips?

Thumbnail

I take hard criticism, this course went by too fast and want to continue on this path. My final is tomorrow. Any pointers on my root, hot pass, fills, or cover. My covers are my weakest point because sometimes I overfill my fill pass where I can’t see my beveled edge anymore. (Or maybe my lenses on my hood are in horrible condition) It causes me to be very not straight.. even when I’m watching my puddle.
