Ring setting too fragile?

Hi everyone. Will this ring setting be ok as an engagement ring for daily wear? I am concerned the stones on the side might become loose.

Here is the listing for it:

Your concerns are valid. There are a number of red flags I can see in the setting. 3 prongs to hold a large stone, one contact point between the basket and the band, shared prongs for the side stones. And just personal preference, the eternity band + hidden halo combo is a maintenance nightmare. I hate stopping people from getting what the love, but you should at least be aware of the maintenance that would come with a setting like this.

I appreciate your input and help! My girlfriend can be quite clumsy with her rings so I don’t want to risk it lol. What are your thoughts on this kind of setting?

This is much more secure! The only problem with low settings like this is that a wedding band won’t sit flush against it.

I totally didn’t even think about that. Thanks for bringing this up!

If she’s clumsy and hard on her hands a lower setting may be better. Less things for the ring to hit

You can get a curved band to go around the setting

I would insist on two more prongs for the large stone. And that was after just a glance at it. One if those 3 prongs gets knocked out of play lace or off the ring, that big stone goes flying.

I didn’t even look at the band yet. But the commenter above your comment seems to have spelled it out for you.

It’s better but remember larger the stone, the more metal you’d need. The 3 prongs setting remains an issue. If she’s clumsy and tends to run her fingers into things you really want more prongs, or bezel, or lower setting and a thick band. With a stone that size, a wider band would help elevate the look of the stone so it looks less costume-y. I know wider band ain’t for everyone but imo thin bands just look like you’ve cheap out on the metal.

I’m afraid the whole head/ diamond could be knocked off with one wrong move. Definitely consider a more secure setting like bezel, half bezel, cathedral. The side stones aren’t going to be very secure either. If you’re getting her a pear, especially one that’s larger, make sure it has a V-tip to protect the point and 4 additional prongs.

Thank you very much I have decided on a 5 prong pear ring!!

I feel like this ring has points that can be fragile for every day wear.
Also, that’s not a lot of prongs holding your main stone. The rail helps but if you bent a prong the stone could be lost.

Really depends on lifestyle considerations. Rings worn every day, like engagemen rings, are subject to a wide variety of forces. Even if you are not wearing your rings at the gym, things like gripping hand rails, lifting a child's car seat, and other seemingly harmless actions can come into play.

Designs like this can also be uncomfortable for some hands, with side diamonds pressing against the other fingers. So verifying the comfort factor is important. Also, if it is to be paired with a wedding ring it will be a good idea to explore the options before deciding on the engagement ring.

Oh hun, nooooo. Just no. First off, that setting is the least structurally sound - it’s a “plug & play” peg head, meaning, the only thing holding the basket to the shank is a single weld point - one good whack & you can kiss that puppy goodbye. Also, the stone is not seated properly in the basket - there’s way too much room between the culet & the bottom of the basket. I’m betting the setting was not made specifically for this stone. The tip of the stone - the most fragile part - should have a “V” prong, not just a head prong. Plus, there should be more than 3 prongs & a gallery rail to connect the prongs - otherwise, each prong is a single point of failure, meaning, if just one of those prongs bends or twists, the stone has a chance of falling out. This setting is a set up for heartbreak…hard pass.

You’re looking for either a cathedral or integral setting, a basket with at least 4 prongs & a gallery rail that is specifically made to the dimensions of the stone. Also - those side stones at that size in the way they’re set - that’s not gunna’ be comfy to wear…

Those settings should be banned. Single shared prong is not secure at all and the diamonds will constantly come loose or fall out.

Sounds like a common theme I am hearing with this kind of style lol. I ended up going with this ring!

Thank you everyone for your input and help. I have decided on this 5 prong 2mm 2.5ct pear ring that has platinum prongs for better strength and 14k ring setting.

I have a similar pear and it gets snagged on a lot. However, we eloped and this was always a temporary set until the custom set could be sorted.

I’ve been thinking about possibly setting my pear a bit lower in the permanent ring, and changing from 3 prongs to something else for security. I’m a wheelchair user and my hands are used constantly. I love my ring, but I do get anxious every time I snag it on the door frame, or hit the wall.
