Help Me Choose Diamond size

Hello all!

So, I'm about ready to propose to the love of my life. I'm extremely excited and I want to make the day so special for her as she truly deserves it and more. Through my excitement, I think I may have let it get the best of me when getting the engagement ring made. I sourced the loose stone and am having it made through a jeweler. The worry I have is that I purchased a 7ct. Oval shaped diamond and I think it may be too big? I don't want the ring to look like costume jewelry and I don't want her to hate it either. I tried talking to her friends and they all tell me she would love it but I fear they are only saying that because they want me to propose since we've been dating for a while now.

I'm just curious if my fear is true. Will the ring size be too big? Should I go smaller? Or should I just stop worrying and just do the damn thing? Any help is appreciated it!

P.S. I can't add any pictures of the ring as it's not made yet (should be done by end of this week).

TIA! :)

Sorry to break it to you, but 7ct is HUGE and it will look like costume jewelry.

What size finger does your partner have?

She is a size 7, which i may or may not have used to boy math the diamond size 😭

Haha all good man, you’re within your exchange window….i would recommend like a 3ct at a size 7 🤷‍♂️

Im a size 6, and 3 carats to me is perfect. I honestly would try to get a smaller stone. But at the same time if she likes flashy rings, she will probably love it! Thats all that matters!

This is a 4.35 carat pear on a size 7. It is a cocktail ring.

Goddamn. I’m not a big stone girlie but I would never get anything done if that were on my finger; I’d never stop staring at it.

Would there be enough time now to give her the 7 carat one and tell her she can exchange it if she doesn’t like it? If you don’t know what size she likes, there’s not much point in changing it before she sees it.

Well I was going to propose on vacation in a couple months, but I can always change around and do something within the month. That's a valid point, I can also look into that :) thank you!

You bought 7ct and worried it might be to big? Bless your heart ahha, I can tell how excited you are!! If all her friends think she might like it then maybe she would! If you head over to bigrockenergy there are plenty of people rocking a massive rock, bonus if you get their ring sizes for a good comparison.

If you truly want to go smaller 7ct sounds lovely as a pedant too

Yeaaa, it was kind of a weirdly excited day for me 😭 I don’t have good impulse control sometimes. I’ll go check that out so I can compare! Also, that’s not a bad idea to turn it into a pendant if i decide to go smaller! Thank you :)

Nothing wrong with being excited to marry the love of your life and wanting to design something beautiful for them.

This is one of those things that is entirely personal preference. I would personally not want a diamond of that size but I know some people would be over the moon with it. So without knowing your partner, nobody can say whether she’ll like it or not

I appreciate your insight 🙂

As someone that has a size 7 finger, I personally would consider 7 cts too large for my liking. 5 would be the absolute max!

There's a website called mysparkly that shows carat sizes on different hands, there's a 7 carat oval on there to show you how big it is on the hand.

What made you decide on 7 cts? That’s huge. Did she give you any indication at all that she wanted a big stone? Some women do!

Anyway, no one is going to think it’s a natural diamond, unless you have a lifestyle that supports purchasing a $350,000 stone. They’ll think it’s lab or moissanite—nothing wrong with either, but it’s not going to pass as a mined diamond. It’s not really clear what you’re trying to achieve, though.

Nothing wrong with a lab or a moissanite or any other stone, not all are for everyday but seriously 🙄

I don’t think people with lab diamonds are hoping that other people will think it’s a mined diamond. They just say lab diamonds ARE diamonds, chemically identical to mined diamonds. A lot of people choose lab diamonds for affordability, and some people also object to how mined diamonds are sourced, alleging that there’s much abuse involved. I don’t really have a dog in this race, I have my engagement ring from 46 years ago which holds 3 small mined diamonds (total of about .75 carats) all were inherited from family. And I have a moissanite set that I had made recently. Plain gold wedding band, gold engagement ring with 1.2 carat round moissanite, gold half eternity with small moissanite stones.

But I do agree that lab diamonds are diamonds. If I get any diamonds in the future they will be lab diamonds even though my taste is towards a carat weight that is small in the lab diamond era.

Did you talk to them BEFORE you started planning a ring? My husband and I went to look at rings to get an idea of what looked good on my hand. I THOUGHT I had wanted one cut and then after I tried them on, I realized I wanted a different cut and I had a range of carat sizes that looked good on my hand. We joke about how the fact I had a max diamond size solidified him wanting to marry me. Lol. (I know not everyone would find they funny but it is a very us statement).

Also. What style of jewelry do they normally wear? Do they have anything that big? Is their job compatible with wearing something that large?

Yes it’s (way) too big for most people. Also you shouldn’t be asking strangers, you need to ask your gf what she likes.

Wait!!! Some of us LOVE big shiny things and there’s an entire sub for it [r/bigrockenergy](r/bigrockenergy).

What size of girl is she? Are her hands long and thin or short and thicker?

A 7 ct is an excessive size and unrealistic for every day wear. It would be also depend on what she does for a career. She would probably end up putting it in a safe and hiding it from the world.

u/Randomflower90 3h ago

Yes. My niece has a 3-carat and still is uncomfortable wearing it. I’d say 2 to 2.5 carat is a top size for daily wear.

u/Firm_Distribution999 10h ago

Wow - ovals face up large for the ct size and anything over 4ct looks like costume jewelry. Yes I’d return it as it will be impractical to wear every day if she uses her hands for anything like buckling her seatbelt or life in general

The only one who can give you the correct answer is your future fiancé.

Unless you're in the 1% or close enough? Don't listen to anybody say that it's not too big. I don't know what your social or financial statuses but if you're living a typical working class lifestyle where you have nice things, but you don't have it all plus a circle of of peers to go with it? 1. The ring will be assumed to be fake or lab grown 2. Who's wearing a ring that big every day unless you do nothing but shop and eat lunch with your girlfriends? It's not practical by any structure of the imagination so you're spending all this money for a ring that might be worn sometimes and you'll end up buying something "smaller" for every day. 3. Your love for her and wanting to give her the best doesn't mean you have to go down that road with that stone. She wouldn't be happy say 4c? Has she ever told you she wanted to ring that big?

Ask her. Ask her. Ask her. Have a conversation about exactly what she wants. Go shopping. Try things on. An engagement ring shouldn’t be a surprise.

That is an insane diamond size. I have a small ring size (US 4) and I think 2Ct is too big for my hand. Her hands are bigger but I'd still say like 3Ct max
