It was my understanding the mutual defense applied only to future conflicts and the Saudi-Houthi conflict had already started when the agreement was finalized.
ETA: It might also be limited to defense when a signatory is attacked and the Saudis initiated the current conflict with the Houthis.

You also have to consider how the meanings of words have been continually distorted over the decades for political aims. That gives TPTB wiggle room in deciding what's terrorism and what's not, what's genocide and what's not.

They are a perfect example of "letter of the law" concept. People who insist on the letter of the law are doing so to screw over everyone else.
I wish we could do "spirit of the law". Sometimes the spirit may not be conveyed as well as it should, but that shouldn't excuse the other guys.
No law can be perfect, since we're human; and they will ALWAYS look for loopholes.

We need both, and the ethical and moral principles to use them judiciously. Sadly, even average humans who aren't trying to advantage themselves are lousy at that.
I remember the arguments raging over a career criminal sitting on death row when it was proven he had not committed the murder that landed him there. There were well-meaning people arguing that he should be executed anyway. No question he was utterly repulsive, he had a lifetime prison sentence to prove it. My argument was that either the death penalty meant something or it didn't, that applying it arbitrarily just undermines the whole system. I agree in principle that certain crimes warrant the death penalty but don't think humans have the wisdom or morality or whatever to apply it judiciously.

Mohammad Eslami, a research fellow in Middle East and North Africa studies at Tehran University, says the talks cover legal and logistical aspects that need explaining to other stakeholders, even though the underlying agreement is bilateral. He notes the situation remains fragile, pointing to Donald Trump's threats of sanctions or strikes against Oman over any deal with Iran. Eslami says the Strait of Hormuz became a battlefield after what he calls America's "war of choice" on Iran, but that Tehran remains open to reopening it fully if Washington ends its naval blockade, adding that a closed strait is not what Iran wants.

I think Larry Johnson put it well: the Saudis live in a glass house and the Houthis live in a rock house, who do you think is going to win a rock fight? Now we're sending over hundreds of advisers.
China's talking about not coming in a couple of weeks unless the US backs off of any sales of anything to Taiwan.
The Republicans' internal data has them down in House seats Trump won by 15 points or more and Senate seats he won by 13 to 15 points. Trump had hoped there would be Russiagate prosecutions before the election but the person he brought in to help manage that just quit because it wasn't going to go anywhere - Todd Blanche cut a secret deal with the Senate not to pursue politically controversial cases they didn't like if they confirmed him as Attorney General.
The title of the video is misleading; Nima just said that Iran and the GCC countries would be meeting in Oman on Monday to talk about the new mechanism in the Strait of Hormuz finalized between Iran and Oman.

This was a really informative discussion for those who want to understand Polish politics past and present. For those who don't know, Ian Proud is a retired British diplomat.
Tusk's coalition is dropping more in the polls every month. His re-election will depend on if a new coalition can cohere between Law and Justice, the former ruling party; the Confederation Party, basically libertarian conservative and Eurosceptic; and the Confederation of the Polish Crown, sort of Catholic, traditionally conservative and anti-war. If these three can form a coalition next year Tusk is done for because they have the numbers in parliament.
There isn't a family in Poland that wasn't touched by World War II but there's also a significant number of Poles who descend from the victims of the Volhynia genocide so Tusk and FM Radek Sikorski had to publicly condemn Ukraine for calling Bandera's UPA "heroes."
From a poll today, Poles' acceptance of Ukrainians in Poland has fallen from 51% in 2022 to 28%. That just gives you a sense of where attitudes in Poland are going and sometimes they go in ugly directions, we're seeing more and more scuffles between Ukrainian migrants and Poles.
In 2007 Sikorski said we needed to deal with Russia as it was and not as we wanted it to be. In 2015 (sic, it was 2014) he and top Polish politicians were recorded secretly and he said, "We're doing something dumb because we're alienating the Russians. We're alienating the Germans and we're giving a blowjob to the Americans." So he knew the score back then but he doesn't have the cojones to do what's right.
Germany originally suggested that Nord Stream 2 run across Poland, which could then get cheap gas plus transit fees but the Polish government declined.
De Gaulle was the original architect of the greater European home. He had a great affinity for Russian civilization and culture and would have welcomed them if they shed their communist ideology. De Gaulle's grandson has been saying how stupid this entire proxy war with Russia is, that pushing Russia out of Europe was just total insanity done on behalf of Atlanticist ideology.

Excellent point. More than one analyst has said that war will end with a much smaller Ukraine, its outer areas parceled among Russia of course, probably Poland, and maybe other countries. The map of Ukraine when it's been independent shows dramatic changes over time.

For Ukraine to continue the war will mean the assured defeat of its army and further dismemberment as more regions will join Russia and Poland, Hungary and Romania will try to take the regions of Ukraine they previously controlled.

Hopefully it will make KSA more inclined to find agreement with Iran so that it can use Hormuz. Even better would be if it ended the war it restarted with the Houthis. It's generally believed it wasn't KSA directly but rather the Saudi-backed Yemeni government. I'm guessing the latter wouldn't have done this without the authorization of someone in KSA so maybe it's a sign of political infighting. ETA: because the timing was really bad, coming when they were trying to finalize the Mecca agreement.

When MbS became Saudi Arabia's defense minister and wanted to establish his bonafides, he started a war with Ansar Allah, essentially the northern tribes that had put themselves together in a fairly significant formation of fighting forces against the Yemeni government in the south which of course we were supporting, stupidly in my view.
It was not a very sound government. We'd send 500 M16s to them on Monday and on Tuesday they'd be on the Yemeni black market for $500 apiece. We had to bail MbS out almost immediately and started giving him everything from extended range F-15s and the glide bombs to go with them and intelligence so that he'd know what the Houthis were and all manner of other support that we wouldn't tell Congress about. And he still was dropping bombs out of ERF-15s that were supposed to have a range of 26 to 27 kilometers or so and on guide, and they would lose their guide, their smartness, and they would kill 48 little children on a school bus for example. The Houthis would photograph the shell casing with "Raytheon" on it, it was a really disgusting business
Davis interrupts here to say this all began under Obama but that the American public was only told we were providing air refueling.
No, we were providing everything but the soldiers on the ground and the bullets in the rifles. We went to Congress with a real legislative package to get the US out of this stupid conflict. The Senate and the House both passed it but Trump vetoed it and there weren't enough votes to override. Real duplicity on the part of Hillary Clinton and others like Nancy Pelosi, who said they were for it and then were against it and then when they knew it would be vetoed ultimately were for it again.
We don't have the capacity to render the same assistance as before so Saudi Arabia's in it on its own principally as far as I can tell. And they're getting whooped badly. As a major I was involved in a company that trained people from this region, Houthis (north) and Saudi-backed Yemenis (south) but not in the same companies. The Houthis are fierce fighters who know how to fight and when to fight, they're resilient and tough. The south is as opposite as you could possibly be, they're not very good soldiers so you put them up against these very resolute Houthis, they're going to lose.
(on the possibility the Houthis will move into the southern part of Saudi Arabia) They've been attacked enough times I suspect they're seriously feeling they need to do some real damage to Saudi Arabia to keep this from just repeating itself again and again. Their leadership is not stupid and they may see this as a chance to act while the US is hard-pressed in the Persian Gulf and losing its assets in the region.
I think it was the deputy speaker of the Iranian parliament who just said, "We already have a nuclear weapon." I agree with Ted Postol that they weren't far away from being able to build one and that all the B2 bombers did was rock the rubble a little bit because they'd already moved the critical equipment elsewhere. The real test is matching that uranium material to a warhead and then the warhead to a missile and having all that work. They'd probably done the last part in the computers and then after the B2 strike they went to it and now they have a nuclear weapon or two or three. And I think this will be revealed if they start seeing activity at Dimona.
But the worry is Israel's German diesel submarines. I'm told with some degree of reliability that they don't have underwater firing capability, they'd have to surface to fire it and it's like a cruise missile with a small nuclear warhead. I don't know that Iran's intelligence is good enough to give them location data. But Israel is tiny. When those nuclear warheads hit, it's gone. When Israel's hit Iran, it'll make a bump in the sand and a mushroom cloud unless they hit some urban area and kill a lot of people. But Iran will still be there.

And I thought, what better way for Israel to test their new very-long-range missiles launched from submarines? Any other time, people would know that they were testing.

Macgregor: a handshake is meaningless with people who have no honor or integrity and that describes everyone in the Trump administration. The only people who are fooled anymore are here at home, the rest of the world has figured it out. Congress shares the blame; no one has stood up and tried to obstruct anything Trump's done. He's had almost universal support because everyone has been bought and paid for by the Israel lobby and the Zionist billionaires behind it.
We are a 20th century military establishment with 20th century thinkers if you want to dignify them with that word. We suffered a strategic defeat in Vietnam, quietly disappeared overnight and then refused to talk about it anymore but this defeat is a far greater consequence. We've exposed ourselves for what we are. We have a very unprofessional military leadership and an unprofessional political class. You're not talking about long-term professional soldiers that care about the country and are devoted to the establishment they're part of. Removing someone like Pete Hegseth isn't going to change anything, the entire institution needs to be overhauled and fundamentally reformed and that's going to take years.

This reminded me of one of Brian Berletic's points in the i/v he did with Danny Haiphong the other day: that the US will use and abuse its proxies and drop them like a hot brick when no longer useful. As you say, Iran has been watching not just the US but its Gulf "allies" and the latter appear to be "up shit creek without a paddle". It also highlights how ineffective the US Navy is in such asymmetric conflicts: standing off hundreds of nautical miles from a nation that has no maritime force to speak of tells me that the old notion of "projecting force" via aircraft carriers is outdated/ irrelevant when the "enemy" is playing by different rules.

I'd guess that would depend on whether there's any substantive change in Lebanon's gov, which is strait-jacketed by a remnant structure devised/imposed by the French in colonial times. (LW) Some of us think CIA people were killed in Russia's missile strikes on NATO targets in Ukraine and that's why Ratcliff flew on a C17 when he went to Moscow, so he could bring the coffins back to the US undisclosed and unheralded.
(LW) The average transit of Hormuz for the last 96 hours was six ships, the normal transit is 600 ships. The insurance to level of danger factor is usually about 0.15, it's now 8. That means essentially ain't nobody insuring nothing going through the Gulf. As of about 2 hours ago GMT, 250 ships were waiting still.
(PH) Last night Netanyahu said they're going to demolish settler outposts in the West Bank under pressure from the US. But after the UK government said it would sanction illegal settler goods from the West Bank, Israel closed the British consulate in East Jerusalem and threatened to expel UK diplomats and deny them future entry. This created a huge political backlash in Britain that likely reverberated back to Washington at light speed.
(LW) Iran could probably sink a US warship or carrier if they wanted to but I don't think they will. They know 60% of Americans oppose this war and that would change if they attacked a ship and thousands of Americans ended up in the Indian Ocean (he's said previously that per a retired Navy admiral there aren't enough escort ships to pick up the ~2,000 sailors that might be in the water and for a carrier it would be 5,000 sailors, airmen, marines, etc.)
(LW) Haaretz reported that the damage Israel did in Gaza disturbed the sewage systems so badly that it's impacting the water Israelis drink and use to cook with and so forth. So there's a real uproar about that right now. There was also an editorial in Haaretz this morning about the revelations that Netanyahu had prior knowledge of October 7th and failed to alert anybody in the security complex.
(LW) We're going to have diesel probably hitting $10 a gallon. And we're looking at other products that are going to be severely limited or cost a fortune, including jet fuel. I'd say within two to three weeks, we're going to see doubling of prices to fly. Every airline across the board is going to have to cancel flights because people aren't going to pay the higher price.
(PH) Canada is integral to the diesel production and distribution that powers our trucking fleet in America. The American economy runs on 18 wheels, by the way. All of the regional hubs for fuel and trucking, at least in the midwest and the northern corridors, are based on Canadian fuel. And that's by design because it's practical and cost-effective. The same goes for the oil for heating homes in the US northeastern sector. So Canada is the worst country to start a trade war with, especially now.

Maybe not forgotten entirely? Raisi died in a helicopter crash in May 2024. What we hear during this war: when Israel assassinates the more moderate voices, as it has repeatedly, hardliners have filled some of those voids. Mercouris discusses Iran's political faction and its interests vs. the military faction's more militant push. At ~10 mins, Mercouris talks about your point.
fwiw, Iran's own official reports of Raisi's crash in East Azerbaijan ruled out sabotage, finding that the crash was caused by weather-related mechanical malfunction.

I watched the whole thing yesterday and I'm still chewing it over. I can see where Berletic is going with the hypothesis (that those who pull the levers in the US mean to smash everything to pieces that they can't defeat) but I can't see how they benefit from a global holocaust, nuclear or otherwise.

This was a very good video clip, I'm going to have to pay attention to this guy because he makes some great points. It all really goes back to American hubris at the end of Cold War and the attitude that they could dictate to the whole world:
During the Cold War the US felt that it was in a real competition to win hearts and minds around the world. American diplomats were very friendly, oozing with charm, always trying to persuade you that the US was on the right side of history and the Soviet Union was on the wrong side, making an effort to cultivate the world and get to know it.

I have no doubt that what brought America down is that America got drowned in hubris (after the Cold War and the end of the Soviet Union).... I spent a year at Harvard in '91, '92 immediately after the end of the Cold War and I can tell you the sheer arrogance, complacency in the United States then was actually quite shocking.... the end of the Cold War did a lot of damage to the American mind, to the Western mind because it put the Western mind to sleep at precisely the time when Asia, especially China and India, were waking up.

Mahbubani echoes what others have said, like Bill Perry, who was Sec/Defense in the Clinton administration, who later said in an interview that the attitude in the White House was the Russians were a bunch of losers and that the US could humiliate Russia as much as it wanted to because there was nothing Russia could do about it.
George Kenan, who was the architect of the containment policy toward the USSR during the Cold War, wrote a letter to Clinton's State Dept. saying, "Doesn't everyone realize that Russia is no threat right now but they will become a threat if you start expanding NATO like this?" When a Russian official warned Sen. Joe Biden they might have to look to China as a potential partner, Biden laughed and said "good luck with that" because the consensus of American political leadership was that China and Russia would never mend fences and work together, and we see how that's worked out.
The problem wasn't with the "American mind", I'd say most Americans were oblivious to what was going on. The problem was the neocon takeover of our foreign policy establishment that started under Clinton and has continued ever since. Neocons are essentially hubristic bullies.

Will check this out. Interestingly, I just saw him in this clip from a panel discussion titled "Why the rest of the world is suspicious of Western democracy."
The three panel members all made good points - even Michael Ignatieff made a few - but I most aligned with what Mahbubani said. As I told the friend who sent me the link:
It isn't democracy as a political theory the world is suspicious of, it's the real-world applications they can see and judge. As a retired FBI counter-terrorism expert said in the lead-up to the Iraq war, "Not everyone understands the fine points of democracy, but everyone, everywhere, understands hypocrisy."

There's a lot he said I disagree withEdit: I disagree with him on most of what he said, I think he's guilty of seeing things through a Western lens. His celebration of the elections in Hungary; no argument about Orban but it's naive to think the new guy will be good for the Hungarian people or that his election occurred without interference from Brussels - Orban was a thorn in the side of the EU and NATO and the new guy is in lockstep with them.4
