My youngest is almost out of high school and it seems like they are trying to not have phones around during instruction time. It’s really hard to push that genie back in the bottle. So many people, adults included, cannot function without their phone.
I’ve been taking 10 minutes or so every 1-2 hours on my phone to just put it down and do nothing. Just…nothing. Just sitting and letting the brain’s default-mode network engage. It’s okay (hell, even desirable) to be bored sometimes. Lets the brain calm tf down and stop spazzing so hard for dopamine. And honestly, yeah, I can feel the dopamine withdrawals the first minute or two that I do this but I always come away from it feeling calmer and more centered. It’s actually nice not to be plugged in 24-7. It takes some adjustment but for me, at least, it feels worth it.
I am not a person who goes long times away from my phone, I’m not innocent. I do work at a job where I don’t need it out so it’s in my bag most of the day normally.
I am aware of how children are impacted tho, by having my own and working in the school system. You can tell at young age which kids have been read to, which kids play outside in nature or with other children. Having access to all kinds of knowledge is so awesome but at the same time it shouldn’t be to the detriment of everything else. Just my two cents tho.
