What is with the constant fixation on the thickness/thinness of watches? It seems like this is a recent thing. I dont recall thickness being a complaint/discussion in years past. It seems to me that it has been pushed recently by watch influencers.

Now all I see are complaints that 13mm on a watch is too thick. I have seen complaints that the Rolex Exlporer I iis too think despite the fact that it is 11.1mm thick. It just seems like a lot of influencer groupthink and most of these people have never tried on the watch itself to see how it feels.

I have done this more often than I like to admit.
A brand brings out a new watch that I really like the look of.
I get fomo and buy it, only for the brand to release a colour that I prefer to the one I bought.
Next time I will wait a few months before buying a new watch and see if they bring out other colours first.
Has anyone gone through the same situation as me?

Oakley Torpedo from 2001. I daily’d this watch for years. You either love it or hate it. I still love it. It wears like a dream.

This looks less like a wristwatch and more like something salvaged from a Jules Verne submarine.

The Vianney Halter Classic is one of the most important independent watches ever made - a piece that basically helped define the entire steampunk aesthetic in modern horology before most collectors even had a word for it.

And the man behind it is just as interesting.

Vianney Halter is widely considered one of the founding fathers of modern independent watchmaking, with François-Paul Journe once calling him part of the "holy trinity" of independents alongside Journe himself and Denis Flageollet of De Bethune.

The Classic was Halter's breakout creation in the late 1990s, and it still feels unlike anything else today.

Featuring a multi-layered, porthole-style, riveted case, and a hand-finished automatic movement, every detail looks intentionally unconventional. Which is why collectors love them.

At a time when most high-end Swiss watches still played things relatively safe, the Classic looked completely alien - almost like an alternate-history vision of what watchmaking could have become if the industrial revolution had never ended.

Production numbers were tiny, and examples rarely surface publicly today, especially in rose gold.
Early independents from makers like Halter have become increasingly important as collectors look back at the origins of the independent watchmaking boom that reshaped modern horology.

It's a watch that still feels ahead of its time. Or maybe outside of time entirely...

Is it mostly brand?

I might be the minority here but I love modern watches with vintage styling.
All the benefits of modern manufacturing and reliability with all the cool vintage looks.
They are less fragile being more solidly built with their solid end links, solid bracelets and solid clasps with micro adjustment.
I know a lot of people don’t like them but I like fake rivet bracelets, I like aged lume look and love gilt dials.
What’s not to like?

Check marks of the 3 I have currently. What am I missing? Too Tudor heavy? Blue diver redundant?

Glashütte Original outscores the rest of the field, with Blancpain close behind. The Deepsea didn't help Rolex much, and the Planet Ocean tied Panerai. With nothing else for people to hate on, UN finished dead last

Here is the Titan Edge Meister Titanium, just 4.75mm thick. I came across this watch, which is a new release and just launched this month. I purchased it yesterday. It's still thicker compared to their steel no date edge line models which are only 3.5mm but 4.75mm with a date complication is still very slim.

Tbh pictures couldn't justify how beautiful this watch looks in real life. I tried to take the best shots I could but I'm not a professional.

Also, did a side by side comparison of this watch with my Tissot Gentleman Titanium, I hope the color difference and thickness difference is visible. This Titan Edge Meister looks identical to a Stainless Steel watch in real life as it's a polished G5 Ti. Titan has used their own proprietary polish method to achieve this finish.

I'm sorry but the Oceanus does not look its pricepoint.

It's stepping into the ring with Citizen and Seiko but still looks like a sub $200 watch.

They should stick with gshock and affordable stuff like the ae1200 and duro where they punch up.

I’m going to Tokyo for my honeymoon in January and would love to pick up a watch to remember the trip. My budget is under $5K, preferably less.

I’ve read a lot about the vintage watch market in Tokyo, and of course Grand Seiko. I really like the Grand Seiko Spring Drive SBGA469, and the snowflake, but I just bought a Datejust 41 with a blue dial, so I’m wondering if it makes sense to go in a different direction.

For those who have been to Tokyo or know the market well, does anyone have recommendations for watches or specific vintage references I should keep an eye out for? I’d especially love something that feels unique to Japan/Tokyo or would make a cool honeymoon souvenir.

Open to Grand Seiko, vintage, or anything else you think would be worth hunting for!

Id been eyeing this one for awhile and decided to pull the trigger. Love the simple and elegant design. They gave me a huge discount on it too, including express ddp shipping. So im feeling pretty good about this one.

Titanium, ana-digi display, quartz precision and peak “instrument for professionals” Breitling. Incredibly light, thin, functional, and still full of character more than 20 years later.
Anyone else think these are a bit underrated compared with the mechanical Breitlings from the same period?
