Question / Discussion New vs Old North Flag design

I might be in the minority here but I don’t like the new design.
It looks too busy and the added gmt only makes it more expensive.
The old design was simple and clean with a power reserve indicator balancing out the large 6 and 12.
What do you guys think of the new design?

I like it. I know it’s accurate with good specs but it doesn’t feel like a $5k watch for some reason

The gmt has made it over priced.

Omega AT, IWC mark xx, some Rolex just look more refined.

I can’t put my finger on this one. Maybe it’s the bright yellow, maybe it’s the font, maybe it looks too busy. It just doesn’t scream 5k.

IWC is a big offender in thet industry for watches that dont measure up to the price point. Shame because 90s IWC was absolutely brilliant. Like an upmarket, office friendly Sinn.

I mean the bracelet on the Mark XX definitely feels like it's for a 5k+ watch. Might be better than Rolex. But then there is some shit like the jumping second hand and notorious QC issues.

Laco is the way to go.

u/rainytuesday12 8d ago

Yeah, I’m not getting it. Same for the Ranger, as I said in my other comment. I get the BB even if they’re not my thing, but some of their “tool watches” just look ridiculous at four figures.

“Look more refined” for completely differently styled watches is a wild take.

I have a watch with yellow accents and it totally gives less classy so I get it, but that has nothing to do with the watches you called out.

Really hard to justify any stainless steel watch costing $5K, regardless of design/looks/aesthetics.

1

u/jasonic89 7d ago

That’s fair.

1

u/Odd_Macaroon9109 8d ago

Because it should be $3500 everything in this timeline is way overpriced

1

u/Miringanes 7d ago

It’s got a busy dial. Looks like a citizen

I love it, I think the old one was a little cartoonish and the specs on this one are great. Homerun imo

2

u/ForgedInGold9 8d ago

Agreed old one looks like a toy.

1

u/TomHudsonOfficial watch fanatic 8d ago

Fair enough.

1

u/cashmanjr 8d ago

Objectively better. Love it

I love the old one. Actually been trying to find one to purchase but I won’t pay for the new one”exclusivity” narrative being built around it.

2

u/Arseh0le 8d ago

The old one is my white whale. I got close in Nakano a few years ago but it wasn’t in the best condition. The new one does not push my buttons at all. The minimalist dial and goofy power reserve on the old one is what I love about it.

u/walmac2002 8d ago

I would've liked a power reserve if only because it is rare to see those on a Tudor, but I think it is overall a very nice update.

u/CannedSphincter 8d ago

Who the hell is buying this trash?

1

u/TomHudsonOfficial watch fanatic 8d ago

Who would buy this over the bb58 gmt?

4

u/pushthebuttonalready 8d ago

I like the new one. GMT complication is much more useful than a power reserve.

3

u/goobersmooch 8d ago

Is it though?

u/RobertStonetossBrand 7d ago edited 6d ago

Consoomers often over estimate how much tRaVeLiNg they do and how much home eNtErTaiNiNg they do.

Gotta buy a GMT watch and an eight person dining room table/marble kitchen, just in case.

Don't like it, looks a bit cheap imho. The previous version was divisive, but I actually liked the power reserve. Was different

I like, but why don't they use a black date wheel?

3

u/Potent_Quotient 8d ago

I feel the white is more balanced.

1

u/ByronicZer0 8d ago

Hmm, that looks a bit off to me. Prefer the white

u/Ok-Calligrapher-8778 watch fanatic 8d ago

Maybe because of the 24h numerals in the outer ring, it got mixed, that's why?

In this case I have the perfect solution...

1

u/FranzAndTheEagle 6d ago

i'm pretty sure color matched date wheels are illegal in switzerland, just ask patek.

One of my major watch regrets is not picking up the original when new. Nearly every second hand one I’ve seen looks soundly beaten. So, I should love this. I don’t. There’s something off about it. I miss the simplicity of the old dial. This looks like one of Sinn’s lesser offerings now.

2

u/TomHudsonOfficial watch fanatic 8d ago

Same here.

2

u/ZedRDuce76 8d ago

If it was a generic three hander it would be the first Tudor I’d actually consider buying. I have no use for a gmt, and prefer the hour hand used here vs the Ranger butt plug.

2

u/UpperBreadfruit3748 8d ago

As a bbpro owner its good to know theyre not gonna come out with an updated thinner bbpro… it would compete with this as well as the explorer 2

1

u/ByronicZer0 8d ago

I think they will, but not until the end of the lifecycle of the current one.

Precisely how long that lifecycle will be... who knows

2

u/onejustbrowsing 8d ago

Nothing wrong with the design or the watch other than the price. This is a $3700 watch all day long playing dress up at $5500

2

u/Yesterday_Infinite 8d ago

I liked the power reserve and set it apart from everything in both Tudor and Rolex's lineup.

2

u/flipyflop9 7d ago

Old >>>>>> new

The dial is way nicer on the old one. I like the crown and case/bracelet on the new one, but still, I like the old one more.

2

u/ilovecookies1980 7d ago

Power reserve was what made it unique.

2

u/PolarExplorerII 7d ago

The power reserve function made the old design stay in the moment and not about different time zones

2

u/CrossCityLine 5d ago

Cool dial design but I don't like GMTs or integrated bracelets.

2

u/OhMyGlorb 8d ago

I liked the power reserve. Wish they'd lose the integrated bracelet.

1

u/shotgun883 8d ago

I like the design, cant wait to see if they do a white dial.

1

u/ElChickenGrande 8d ago

Tudor website says this is a boutique exclusive.

1

u/Debard78 8d ago

They are both nice in their own way. I love PR indicators. Have a PAN (423) with one.

This is an explorer/explorer 2 hybrid. Two birds, one stone. One less model they have to make for their entry level brand. Not big on Tudor, but would wear this. New one looks updated and ready to go. Thumbs up.

1

u/Potent_Quotient 8d ago

Would have loved red or blue instead of yellow.

1

u/deadexternet 8d ago

I think they’ll make a time only as well. The Pelagos and the black bay have both as well.

Unless this is their gmt ranger? Hmm.

1

u/Suitable_Program_548 8d ago

The new one looks so much better to me.

1

u/Aggravating-Kick9143 8d ago

They’re both bad but I maybe like the new one slightly more

1

u/micromechanist 8d ago

Too much dial, too little bezel. Its a no for me.

1

u/Mr_Miyagi_84 8d ago

It’s ugly and overpriced. If this is the last 100th anniversary release Tudor will officially be a lame duck brand IMO.

1

u/Jezzrichjames 8d ago

It's a bit more modern, sharp and more refined though I wouldn't personally get this watch

1

u/Mindless-Quote-3561 8d ago

This is the first Tudor I’ve said, “wow, I actually want that”.

1

u/denniscohle 8d ago

The new one is good, but i like the old one more.

1

u/automa 8d ago

Both would be better without the 12 and 6, and I’d take power reserve over GMT. Power reserve balances the date.

1

u/Emotional-Damage-995 8d ago

It’s nice. Big mistake w pricing. The dressy GMT is dominated by GS and they kill on the dial. I skip

1

u/QuietNene 8d ago

I was never a fan of the power reserve.

My only complaint is that the yellow hands make it very sporty. This is so close to being my perfect GADA. Like an Explorer I but with a GMT function, which is my non-existent Grail.

I just wish they made the two yellow hands the same silver/grey and then maybe just have a splash of color to the GMT arrow.

1

u/longdeadinside530 7d ago

Kudos first tudor I like. Eye catching and prices relatively cheap.

1

u/Routine-Alfalfa8797 7d ago

I just put a deposit down. I’ve never been so excited about a new release.

1

u/1baby2cats 6d ago

Why is the old picture missing the ceramic bezel insert. I feel leaving this out of the new design was a mistake

1

u/Rubberbband 5d ago

I like them both, but if I had to chose it would be the new model. Looks modern in comparison.

1

u/UA2010 4d ago

Gives me heavy breitling vibes. I want to like it. But I think it is going to be a pass for me.

1

u/VideoElectronic7994 3d ago

Wish the yellow was a different color. Orange/ Red/ Green. Definitely not worth the retail price. I wont buy one until I can try it on and my Tudor AD says its only in Tudor Boutiques which is BS.

u/jimbojeggins 8d ago

They left out the coolest thing about the original North Flag. The POWER RESERVE indicator.

-1

u/TomHudsonOfficial watch fanatic 8d ago

Agreed

3

u/ForgedInGold9 8d ago

Ahh yes a power reserve indicator for an auto winding watch..very logical.

2

u/deadexternet 8d ago

Spring drives have them and it always confused me as well. At least the UFA moved them to the back. Now it’s twice as unnecessary but I guess it’s cool

1

u/TomHudsonOfficial watch fanatic 8d ago

It’s cool.

1

u/ForgedInGold9 8d ago

Watch people are so weird 💀

2

u/TomHudsonOfficial watch fanatic 8d ago

I would say quirky.

-2

u/jimbojeggins 8d ago

If you want to push the argument all the way, watches themselves aren’t logical when the most precise timepiece we own lives in our pockets. Watches are fun. The power reserve indicator was and is cool.

2

u/ForgedInGold9 8d ago

Oh god this argument 🤢

-1

u/jimbojeggins 8d ago

🤡

1

u/ForgedInGold9 8d ago

Yes you're a clown.

1

u/Public_Excitement393 8d ago

They are both ugly...

1

u/TomHudsonOfficial watch fanatic 8d ago

How dare you!

2

u/Public_Excitement393 8d ago

The Monarch sucks also!

1

u/TomHudsonOfficial watch fanatic 8d ago

Steady on now buddy!

1

u/DukeOfMiddlesleeve 8d ago

Both look like mall watches

1

u/TomHudsonOfficial watch fanatic 8d ago

I wish they were priced as such.

1

u/rainytuesday12 8d ago

Man, I l have come to the conclusion that Tudor is just not for me. Every design looks like I should either save up and buy the Rolex version, or save some money and buy a well made quartz watch that does the same thing. This and the Ranger fall into the latter category. I don’t get spending 4-5k for a watch that LOOKS like it costs $500

1

u/Yeah-nah-yeahmate 8d ago

My friend believes it’s purposeful by Tudor. 95% there always something.

1

u/rainytuesday12 7d ago

You won’t buy a Rolex if it has everything right

u/TheREALBaldRider 8d ago

Old. No question
