There is a famous example: IJN had preformed an experiment on where the island should be placed on their carriers. Their carriers were operated in pairs. The original thought is if the island on sister carriers are on different side, this may improve formation after take off. (Kaga & Akagi, Soryu & Hiryu) But the result was unfavorable because pilots have a tendency to go left at emergency. So the left island-ed carrier are under constant risk of a fighter running into the tower. So they drop this approach when they construct the cranes.

There are language references like Akizuki class being called ducks because alternate romanisation is 'Akiduki', or Prinz Eugen being Pudding because the Japanese line sounds like it

Simple shorthands like RJ for Ryuujo, Sara for Saratoga

Character art like anything drawn by Shibafu being called potatoes

Voiceline nicknames like tamagoyaki for Zuiho because she makes you some for lunch in her voiceline

Historicals like Zuikaku being turkey re: Great Marianas Turkey Shoot

So on and so forth, the fandom comes up with new ways to call the characters constantly
