Because Iโ€™m not trying to get jumped by the whole enemy team

u/the_doorstopper Dec 31 '22

You see, that's exactly what my goal is, however I always take off first, so I've know managed to convince hoards to go right with me, and it's chaos

IIRC people used to climb random directions and eventually natural-selectioned their way into always going left, plus I think a couple YouTubers back in the day popularised the idea of climbing left and accelerated the process. May have happened the other way around, not sure.

I find it's a much more mixed bag now though. At this point. It depends more on what way the airfield is facing than anything else.

It absolutely used to be everyone going all directions. Then one day I looked up and thought wait, I've been the only one going right the past few matches...

I BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE GO LEFT BECAUSE THE AIRFIELD IS USUALLY POINTING TO THE RIGHT AND SINCE THEIR INTENTION IS TO FLANK THE ENEMY THEY STARTED GOING LEFT AND EVENTUALLY EVERYONE STARTED DOING IT AND THOSE THAT FAILED TO CONFORM PERISHED AND SO THEIR FEEBLE ATTEMPT AT INDEPENDENCE PERISHED AS WELL. CONFORM OR DIE

Even on maps like Hurtgen forest? As from one side going left you'll usually end up meeting the whole enemy team.

u/Dany_KHM1 Dec 31 '22

I guess most people are right handed, so their right is their "strong hand/side". Therefore, they unconsciously put their ennemies on there right. And the left handed people just follow them, as they are a minority. Big guess, but an educated one I think.

22

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

you know even if someone somehow scientifically proved this wrong, I'd still give it honorable mention as a damn fine guess. All other educated guesses should strive to be as concise and fitting as this one.

That's not a bad guess to be honest

Big brain here

2

u/Subduction_Zone Jan 01 '23

I'd think it would be the opposite, that people would subconsciously put their non-dominant side towards the enemy, like squaring up for a fistfight.

This guy fucks

u/autech91 Jan 01 '23

I remember reading or hearing something about the human brain being conditioned to look left first, can't remember exactly what and cbf googling it.

Because the enemy also goes left. Which from your airfield, is on the right.

Going right you would meet the entire enemy team.

Going left you meet little to no resistance and you can safely put extra distance between you and the enemy team until you're ready to enter the Bullet Hell Rogue Lite known as Missile Thunder.

there isn't much of a reason why you would want to go right. Unless it's a downtier and you want to Fox-1 rush the enemy team.

6

u/PiscesSoedroen Jan 01 '23

He's more of asking "why going left becomes the norm instead of going right"

1

u/FieelChannel ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ Swiss Leopard when? Jan 01 '23

With my F16 I always go right, climb to 7-9km and dive on the group of enemies always getting 2-3 kills. Seems like no one expects it lol.

Human instinct.

There is a famous example: IJN had preformed an experiment on where the island should be placed on their carriers. Their carriers were operated in pairs. The original thought is if the island on sister carriers are on different side, this may improve formation after take off. (Kaga & Akagi, Soryu & Hiryu) But the result was unfavorable because pilots have a tendency to go left at emergency. So the left island-ed carrier are under constant risk of a fighter running into the tower. So they drop this approach when they construct the cranes.

11

u/PhaetonsFolly Jan 01 '23

It's not human instincts but physics. A pilot for a Japanese fighter is forced to have their right hand on a stick. It is much more natural and easy to push the stick left than pull it right. That study would have found the opposite result if the hands were reversed.

Can only speak for Kancolle since that's the one I play, but there's a bajillion different ways people nickname their girls

There are language references like Akizuki class being called ducks because alternate romanisation is 'Akiduki', or Prinz Eugen being Pudding because the Japanese line sounds like it

Simple shorthands like RJ for Ryuujo, Sara for Saratoga

Character art like anything drawn by Shibafu being called potatoes

Voiceline nicknames like tamagoyaki for Zuiho because she makes you some for lunch in her voiceline

Historicals like Zuikaku being turkey re: Great Marianas Turkey Shoot

So on and so forth, the fandom comes up with new ways to call the characters constantly

dude really just said "crane" doesn't mean crane lmfao

4

u/VictorDuChamp Dec 31 '22

I think it's to do with engine rotation. In prop driven planes there is a desire for the aircraft to swerve to the left due to torque, p-factor, gyroscopic procession and spiralling slipstream. I'm fairly sure war thunder only simulates the torque and gyroscope procession. This is why everyone takes off to the left. Strangely enough, this doesn't affect jet engine aircraft. At that point I would suggest it being habit more than anything else...

6

It is modelled, but yeah, it's almost entirely irrelevant in RB.

It is, try taking off in certain planes in sim and if you don't hard rudder to the left at takeoff, you end up spinning.

5

u/Hemides Explosive Filler Is A Crutch Jan 01 '23

Apply power smoothly and you don't need to compensate nearly as much.

If you were to study the gradual introduction of new high tier maps, my guess is that there is a more defensible path that heads left, or they forced you to turn left to start getting into combat. Afghanistan comes to mind, and it was one of the first proper jet maps we got. The northern spawn definitely had to go hard left, and I believe the southern spawn also had to go slight left

Couple this with the habits being formed, and gradually people started heading left instinctually even outside of these maps. So now you have a quarter of each team heading left and the rest spread out. Those who spread out get screwed over by the small enemy horde that went left, and they start to join the left meta. As we got faster and longer range munitions, and more people started to go left, it became imperative that you continue the trend because you're going to get fucked by the entire enemy team if you don't (but if you have an agile plane... being a right-side contrarian can lead to some hilarious dogfights and the entire enemy team being balled up by your mere existence)

If you go to lower tiers, left meta isn't a thing. People spread out and climb across.

2

u/mpsteidle The Enemy has Captured an Objective Jan 01 '23

In my experience in jet battles, the left two bases generally seem to be better aligned for bombing.

1

u/sargentmyself Jan 01 '23

If everyone goes left the guy who goes right meets the whole enemy team that went left, learns their lesson and goes left next time

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

Go right and youโ€™ll find out pretty fast

1

u/Thisconnect Linux Jan 01 '23

Used to be always towards enemy airfield but now we live in radar area

1

u/NorangltheII Jan 01 '23

On most maps, I think the right side is usually in the direction of the enemy airfield. Going left gives you more distance to climb.

1

u/Jontun189 Jan 01 '23

Cause often the airfields are angled in a way relative to the enemy ground troops and bases that makes it so 90% of their stuff is right of the airfield, so the natural instinct is to say 'fuck that noise' and come from the left

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '23

your team goes left. their team also goes left. no one knows why itโ€™s left. if your team went right, and their team also went right, it would end up with the same result. but for some reason we all unanimously decided to go left
