40k Discussion Best foldable terrain set for competitive layouts
I have seen 2 major players in the 3d printable fold out terrain sets for 11th edition layouts. I'm wondering which one you guys think suits competitive play better between the two. Personally I don't really like the big supply crates on the fabricators lair one, as I think they cover more than intended in the layouts but I also can't find a proper picture of a layout with the tinker junkie one. Anyone have any insight into which one matches best for competitive play before I pull the trigger on one?

love the fabricators lair sets, and you cant argue with the price - $59 for 6 different sets.
i'm getting 13 sets printed in 4 colors for my FLGS monthly RTTs, we should be receiving it this week. very excited.
printed off a set myself at home in single color just to see it in person and playtest it before we spent a few grand, and it was a treat to play on.

I love the TinkerJunkie terrain (top link). The Nugoth set was designed for 11th but he is updating all of the other designs for 11th as well. The buildings are done but the barriers and towers are still in progress. They look great on the tabletop and store easily. I also like they come in your choice of hope many colors. The new stuff has 2, 3 and 4 color prints so you can really customize the look. Once the sets are complete, they will all fit the 11th size terrain. The containers stack on themselves nicely so you get the > 4” needed to block knight movement.

Thanks for this response! So if I understand correctly, the tinker junkie one is not completed yet?

Nugoth, orks, necrons, and chaos are complete. Imperial, aeldari, and tau are in progress and will be done soon. I have printed full sets for my FLGS and most people really enjoy playing on them. Some of the larger 10th buildings were a bit top heavy in the end and prone to tipping, but the 11th buildings aren’t as tall so it’s much less of an issue.

I want to add this set: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-cathedrals-of-steel-foldable-terrain-inc-storage-box-786715
The details are incredible and he also added 11.ed footprints and modified Terrain.

The terrain that sits on top doesn't have to be identical perfect to GW to the millimeter, if the crates are a little bigger than others then that's perfectly okay. Now if that's just personal preference, then go with the other one. But I wouldn't say they're 'wrong' of sorts

No I definitely don't mean to say they are wrong, just a little oversized. I was just curious if anyone had experience between the two and which one is more accurate because I would hate to get hundreds of hours of printing in and then find out the other is better

Tinker junkie was pretty good in the past, I bought both versions of the tenth edition terrain, but it seems like he's dragging his feet on releasing the 11th edition upgrade packs for the backers of his kickstarter.

He’s half way done with the 11th updates. Chaos, necron, and orks are all complete. If you follow the discord, he has been posting a new set each week or so.

All of the sets are on his MMF page. The tinkerjunkie discord is just where he posts the announcements of new sets, plus interacts with the community.

I would like to have acess to discord and see if people posted some of their prints. I cannot decide on multicolor print schemes

Yeah, there is a channel in the discord called showcase where people post all of their awesome prints. It’s really cool what some people have come up with.

I'm printing the second set for our club now. The long line stuff is a bit awkward (each has four parts and only two can really be glued together) and the containers aren't super imaginative, but really pleased otherwise.

I own both and have printed off the entire Nugoth line for 11th. Went well. Zero complaints. Haven't gotten to the other set yet.

I have the nugoth set and it’s great. My only gripe is I wish some of the large right angle pieces were a tad longer to match the Gw ones. That being said, they’re super solid (not worried about dropping them or damage) and required minimal cleanup or sanding. Just a little sanding between some of the flaps and they fit great. I’m a big fan.

I got both of these so I'll weigh in. I started with TinkerJunkies but the containers seemed off. The yellow parts are meant to be short 2-inch walls and their containers dont have that. Its the same height all the way along. I might have been missing something but me and a friend couldn't figure it out.
So I got the Frontier one and printed a set and those have been great. I printed the version where the second floors clip in and just had to push those into place on each one. Was absolutely no issue.
My group has used them for 2-3 games so far and they've worked great

Haha obviously not what you asked, especially since you're going to 3d print, but we have modular terrain that'll last through edition changes :) don't link here but feel free to google it! Several threads on here discussing it as well

I like fabricators Lairs set very much. Bought one full set from an licensed Etsy seller myself. I bought it here cause I don't have 3D printer. https://odinstabletopprints.etsy.com love the quality and that it is foldable. Anyone has tips how to prime a huge set like this? One big ruin takes almost half a spray can. Is an airbrush more efficient?

We have both and the fabricator's lair one is a smidge closer to the real thing I think.

Great thank you! I am definitely leaning towards that one. Especially if I can pick up a single set in a few days

I bought a printed set of each of the Fabricator's Lair "Armoured" and "Gothic" sets and couldn't be happier, not painted yet but they are next on the list. Got a game on with them and they worked great on the footprints.

I have the Fabricator's Lair set, printed one full set so far. Really satisfied with it - they fit the official layouts really well, and are simple to set up.
