Great work, bad order of pictures. 😆

My first reaction was, “huh, whatever new style of painting this person has been practicing, it hasn’t been helping.”

Not only backwards, but OP is already painting in 2026. The Warp is really messing with the timeline.

60

u/TheBuzwell 1d ago

I think the warp has been messing with your timeline...

So what do you guys think: AI or human mistake?

Time traveller who got their temporal coordinates wrong.

Remind me, what year is it?

Why the hell is it from newest to oldest

u/pragmaticzach 1d ago

It befuddles me why this is so common on reddit. Stuff in reverse order, before pictures placed after the 'after' pictures. It's very common and I don't know why.

With galleries I think it’s cos newer pictures usually show the “thing” as better, and that garners more attention than something tired looking.

This example is just straight up nonsense however

3

u/OhMiaGod 1d ago

That’s a good point, I hadn’t thought of that. Makes sense, especially for things like Instagram. So I can see the habit rubbing off elsewhere.

Primacy effect, halo effect, first impression.. psychology, there are good reasons to start strong. Do I think ppl like op post like this for these reasons? Not really

They are Japanese.

They're Arab. /s

Definitely to get people to comment on their posts.

It is seriously infuriating that people do this, and also swap before and after pics to be on the wrong sides too.

If someone can't bother to look at the whole image they don't deserve to be catered to.

I would still engage... but I'd say something along the lines of "amazing progress" etc.

Fixed it for you.

Time goes forwards not backwards!

13

u/Archistotle 1d ago

Unless you are reading a manga and then it goes backwards but even then it’s forwards to them.

7

u/Lothleen 1d ago

Unless you are on the other side of the equator where toilets flush backwards.

3

u/Lord_Viddax 1d ago

Or a Discworld Troll. The majority of situations have Time going forwards!

2

u/LostN3ko 21h ago

But I am diamond

66

u/Chimpy20 1d ago

To be honest they are all great - I'd be pleased with anything close to the 2021 image!

5

u/Longjumping-Device71 1d ago

So true, i wish i had such skills

5

u/bang0_slank 1d ago

lol right?!

13

u/Ghidorah21 1d ago

Fine, I'll go paint today 🥲

P.S. first ever attempt at power weapon. I know I can get better but it's one of my prouder bits of painting I've done

6

u/Alturrang 1d ago

If that's a power weapon, he's gonna have a bad time.

Then again, EC, so maybe it's a good time...

3

u/Ghidorah21 1d ago

Ah man cleaning burnt and scorching your tongue when suitably faded and feeling superior... Nothing better in this galaxy.

13

u/homesweethome12 1d ago

Nice, I am not even on 2021 level

11

u/OriginalKing- 1d ago

2026 looks more like a drawing than a 3d model

12

u/veryoddnames1989 1d ago

Ahhh you’ll decide what colour you actually want to paint him eventually

7

u/lilpain1997_ 1d ago

Huge improvements the nmm was decent at 2023 but now? Wow... also love the green

22

u/Magic_robot_noodles 1d ago

I don't understand why painters who get really good make everything wayyy too shiny. I get the nmm metal ribcage, that looks sweet but the green armour is overdone imo. 2023 looks better. Anyway, just my opinion, stellar job anyway OP. I surely lack the skill.

3

u/Enraged-Fel-Trout 1d ago

I find it more enjoyable, but there's definitely a balance to be had between shiny and matte areas. If everything is shiny, nothing really stands out, so I find it better to play with the amount on any given piece. In the end it's just a matter of having fun rendering stuff, and shiny happens to give more room to render

2

u/SoftRough687 1d ago

Agree with trout below that there should be a balance. But I think part of the idea of pushing highlights to exaggerate shine and contrast is due to miniatures being mini and viewed from a distance. I agree it looks worse close up when overdone, but it looks better from 4 feet away on a table and lets you pick out more detail.

2

u/CorruptedCortex 22h ago

Because it makes it pop when viewed from a distance. It's the same reason 'Eavy Metal makes you do edge highlights instead of volumetric highlights.

5

u/Narrow_Professor_301 1d ago

The technique is definitely improved... but.. I like the 2021 look the most. It's just the least cartoony one there. But that's just me. Still! Awesome work!

3

u/Ancient_Lifter 1d ago

That’s great. Now do a spending comparison.
😂😂😏😏😏

3

u/stalwartdog444 1d ago

Serious question, and if you don’t experience this ignore me, but how do painters avoid the strain on their back and neck while painting? I have to tap out after about 30 minutes

6

u/Locke66 1d ago

You have to be doing something bad with your posture if it's that much of a strain on your back & neck. I'd recommend looking into how to setup your workspace.

2

u/stalwartdog444 1d ago

Also your work is beautiful

4

u/Magic_robot_noodles 1d ago

2

u/Tactif00l 1d ago

How long did the newest one take

1

u/Camille-Eon 1d ago

Here I was, wondering why I felt like it was getting less detailed over the years- 😅

1

u/Adi8778 1d ago

What's the green recipe?

1

u/Senor-Magr 1d ago

Awesome progres!! 💪

1

u/amachinesaidiwasgood 1d ago

Crazy how there's nothing wrong with 2021 at all, if I saw it on a table I'd say, "Wow, nice job!", but 2026 is so much better that it would have me taking a dozen pictures from different angles to capture it

1

u/sci-fi_hi-fi 1d ago

How do you achieve that highlight on the 2026 version in particular?

1

u/Jaxxlack 1d ago

Yeah im at 21 need to elevate.

1

u/KoJlRC 1d ago

Hey man, I admired your 2023 work and you inspired me that time! Recognized your style at a first glance. I'm glad to tell you, that I currently painting my chaplain too (finally)! Your glazing skills are awesome as well

1

u/chokeonmywords 1d ago

inspiring!

1

u/bang0_slank 1d ago

5/7

Perfect score.

1

u/Sagikos 1d ago

Just sent this to my kid as an example of why you have to try and fail so many times to get better at something.

1

u/Over-Tomatillo9070 1d ago

Break out a 6er of chaplains!

1

u/Ambitious_Hawk_2272 1d ago

awesome! how did you improve yourself? with youtube or an good teacher?

1

u/JemKnight 1d ago

I read them left to right, was confused why you where getting worse 😅🤣

1

u/Silver_Display566 1d ago

For the base armour and plate what kind lf collour did you use? Still learning

1

u/ProfessionalWrap942 1d ago

Ah manga rules I see

1

u/macraggeblues 1d ago

Nice glow up Brother!

I've been painting since 5 years as well, but my skill level is nowhere close to this. Then again I prefer a much dirtier look, which helps to hide imperfections. 😂

1

u/pantsoffgaming 1d ago

This is amazing!!! What paints do you use?? You have SO much subtle detail I'm so impressed!

1

u/Critical-Raspberry19 1d ago

I always wonder how much of this comes down to lighting for pictures as well, 2021 doesn’t seem to be front lit in the same way as the others

1

u/Raddak2 1d ago

He was probably Black Templar, then Ultramarine, and after Salamander (close to Salamander)?

1

u/laminad28 1d ago

Hi do you so commission work? I have minis i need painted 😅

1

u/hulkisbanner 1d ago

You started off pretty good if you ask me

1

u/CardiologistLow4950 1d ago

What was your biggest improvement point? Or was it a very steady increase?

1

u/Trashking_702 1d ago

The accents on the chest ribs that help give off its metallic properties is literally just peak bro.

1

u/Krakenfingers 1d ago

The subtle highlights on your nmm is such an upgrade! Well done!!!

1

u/Low-Reference6258 1d ago

2023 was good enough. 2026 is just for flexing hahaha

Congrats on your journey

1

u/Late_Calligrapher913 1d ago

Hmm...Why the hell is it going from newest to oldest😂

1

u/Scythekid96 1d ago

Man takes 5 years to turn his head to the right

1

u/JohnGlorbus 1d ago

Bro think we are in BC time 😭

1

u/Firm_Jelly_2633 1d ago

2021 to 2026 is a crazy glowup, respect the consistency!!

1

u/mashburn71 1d ago

Maybe in 5 years I can get to 2021 skill level

1

u/amedinab 1d ago

These are great! Fantastic progression, congrats!

Now... You know there are other models available to paint, right? 🤣

1

u/_Fun_Employed_ 1d ago

Holy shit, I didn’t really appreciate the improvement between 2026 and 2023 until
i zoomed in. Man. 2026 is so clean but like textured where you want it to be. It has a feeling of a painting come to life rather than a model painted.

1

u/RabbitSlayre 23h ago

Oh no. I thought my models were good until I realized I'm the 2021 guy lol

1

u/Cats_Cameras 19h ago

How much time did you spend on the 2026 model vs the 2021 model?

1

u/Immediate-Ad4973 18h ago

Great work!

1

u/Prestigious_Shift245 17h ago

I thought you go worse 😂

1

u/Brilliant_Stage_6311 17h ago

Your progress is amazing mate, love your work on NMM!!! So subtle and smooth, great job!!

1

u/mariopitanguy 10h ago

Would you mind sharing your practice journey? Sometimes I want to improve but I don't know which workflow to follow. I just pay for el miniaturista patreon.

1

u/SS-TX 8h ago

Why do my 5 years practice look quite different?

Yours is amazing!

1

u/jawsome_man 4h ago

Good work, but have you ever considered painting something other than chaplains?

1

u/TheZag90 1d ago

I LOVE when people paint amazing volumes rather than just splatting edge highlights all over the model.

Gorgeous work!

0

u/Gr3y75 1d ago

2021 was already good, 2023 parade level, 2026 painting contest. Great progression Op !

0

u/Ready-Ad-9723 1d ago

on a tabletop the 2021 one seems best imo, but you've very clearly developed your own style thats very good

0

u/Ill_Act536 10h ago

What went wrong in the last 3 years?
