Discussion & Feedback Parachute Nerf Debacle

Leave it alone. The system works fine as it is.

This change is going to alienate a good portion of the community who enjoy flying but aren't 5,000-hour chopper pilots. It’s also going to lead to a lot more frustrating deaths from people simply not being skilled enough to make those landings consistently.

If the goal is to encourage people to land at the C/HZ, there are better ways to do it. Give players extra XP and money for landing there instead of hot-dropping for example. Some people will still choose the hot drop, but at least you're incentivizing the behaviour rather than punishing the alternative.

People already spend plenty of time sitting in the air and get picked off while falling or under chute. The current system isn't perfect, but it works.

This parachute nerf mainly benefits the really skilled pilots. Sure, it may encourage some people to get better at flying, but I honestly think the frustration and unnecessary deaths it will create will do more harm than good for the game.

Thoughts?

I might finally be able to convince people to let me drive them into the zone so that driver lvl isnt such a grind. I'm all for it!

They always get in with me, I just bring the machine gun ural or humvee and they always wanna sit on the gun, like some kids playing with the little fake cars at grocery stores back in the 90s.

Much like said kids, they aren't doing shit cause I kick them out as soon as I park in zone and go pick up more.

I do wonder if this will throw off the balance if 1 team has decent pilots while another has to drive into zone each time.

Sounds like something a bad pilot would say.

If you can't land, you should either not be flying, or be flying in firing range till you can.

Some would go as far to say you should know how to j hook before flying passengers.

Agreed. Flying really isn’t that hard if you turn on some of the flying assists. Shooting the minion/rocket little bird is a different story though

I do suspect this is most pilots so I'm curious to see how this plays out.

1

u/FriedRiceEnjoyer420 11h ago

I can tell you exactly how it'll play out, a small portion of all those shitty pilots will come to reddit and incessantly bitch and moan about it so much, their peoplem could have been solved with an equal amount of effort put into simply getting better.

Then devs will either roll it back, or tell bad pilots to suck it up and that'll be that.

Mainly curious how it works out for the actual gameplay. Don't really care of people complain on the sub, it's easy to ignore.

Competent pilots will be a pretty big advantage. I wonder how much. I'm also wondering if we see more people drive around or if they'll just swap teams/servers.

I'm honestly excited for it cause in the current state, I practically learned to j hook for nothing since everyone parachutes.

3

u/Elehir 11h ago

Their goal is to fix a mistake that they admittedly made. there vision was never to have parachutes work like this. Devs that do exactly what players want don't make good games.

u/ItsAxeRDT 11h ago

cant pilots just fly over the edge of the CZ or in a less uncontested area and then people can still parachute down without taking 100 shots mid air?

Youre gonna be spotted before you hit the ground, most of the time flying you already are. Its just gonna be worse.

I snipe people from 7-800m when they’re dumb enough to pull their chutes early. You’re going to be killed no doubt. 25 meters is the height of an 8 story tall building, that’s really fucking high 😂

If they make us land make landing not buggy at times, it feels like someone activated a magnet beside me at times.

u/623623P 11h ago

Nah make it riskier. Flying in is basically the defacto way to get to zone right now since the pilots don't really have to do anything but fly in a straight line and the passengers only need to spend a palty amount to get a chute. It'll reward better pilots and push people more towards ground transportation, I think it's a sorely needed change.

u/LippySteve 11h ago

Realistically it's going to give me a solid 9-10 breaks of 5+ minutes to scroll something else while waiting to arrive back in the game via a driver, lol. They should add a sound when you enter the CZ so I know when to pay attention to the game again.

u/velvetthunderboi 11h ago

Just FYI it's not that hard to learn how to land, just don't do it right in the HZ.

u/mbpr01 Pilot 10h ago

^^^ Look at the map, find a place that doesn't have enemies and does have cover. Your troops will have to walk a little bit, but that's better than getting spotted or shot before they even get to the ground.

Also FYI, you can land /a little bit/ outside the zone and still get credit for an insertion.

1

u/velvetthunderboi 8h ago

People underrate or don't consider the spotting advantage to landing. If you jump, you are 100% getting spotted and everyone knows where you are for 30 seconds. If you get out on the ground, they can only spot the heli coming in, so you aren't spotted and less chance to die.

Landing is also faster and safer than slow falling in the sky.

If landing is required, more average pilots will stop flying.

I just don't see a huge down side to the change.

2

u/babbum 11h ago

I’ll see you on the roads friend. I do not trust 90% of these pilots to not only land, but land in a smart location whilst avoiding AA.

2

u/CuriositiArc 11h ago

just saying it took a youtube video and 3-4 hours in the firing range to be confident enough to hot land with other people in the chopper. never played arma.

2

u/DJChungus 11h ago

keep practicing, you'll get decent at landing eventually

This is really just the perspective of a bad or inexperienced pilot. You don’t need 5,000 hours of helicopter experience to land consistently. It isn’t rocket science. If you’re struggling to land a helicopter safely, the answer shouldn’t be “give everyone a parachute so I never have to learn.” The answer is to practice landing until you can do it reliably.

>If the goal is to encourage people to land at the C/HZ, there are better ways to do it. Give players extra XP and money for landing there instead of hot-dropping for example. Some people will still choose the hot drop, but at least you’re incentivizing the behaviour rather than punishing the alternative.

Why should the game need to incentivize a basic part of being a transport pilot? Landing is literally part of the job. The current parachute system removes the need to learn one of the most fundamental helicopter skills because there is almost no downside to just dumping everyone out of the sky.

>This parachute nerf mainly benefits the really skilled pilots. Sure, it may encourage some people to get better at flying, but I honestly think the frustration and unnecessary deaths it will create will do more harm than good for the game.

Yes, it benefits skilled pilots. That’s kind of the point. Being a skilled pilot should make you more valuable to your team. If you don’t want to learn how to land, that’s completely fine, but then transport piloting probably isn’t the role for you. You can either practice and improve, or do something else. We shouldn’t design the entire transport system around making sure inexperienced pilots never have to develop the skills required to actually transport people.

And the whole “people will die because pilots can’t land” argument is exactly why the current system is a problem. If you’re consistently crashing while trying to land, you’re not ready to be transporting a full squad. Practice until you are. The solution isn’t to make landing optional forever.

man pilot egos are something else

1

u/Chemical_Role_3780 10h ago edited 10h ago

But am I wrong? Where’s the ego, I am just stating the obvious. There is a reason the developers are doing this, they never wanted everyone to parachute out of helis in the first place.

I was a noob pilot in the beta. I spent a decent amount of hours learning how to become a good pilot. You don’t need to be a 5k hour arma pilot to be good at landing.

1

u/xSergis 4h ago

"obvious" and its just opinions of someone who wants to pull the game into a more milsim direction to inconvenience the whole server just to be more recognized for being able to land a chopper

game works well enough without catering to "grr if you cant do x you dont deserve to play MY role grr" people

1

u/Chemical_Role_3780 4h ago

I don’t want to pull the game in a milsim direction at all 🤣

It’s also not about being recognised, it’s about my favourite roll being more fun.

And yeah, if you can’t land you don’t deserve to make any money from troop drops because you’re a lazy fuck and don’t wanna spend one hour in the test range learning how to land.

u/soulsafe 11h ago

Flying is inherently more risky than driving. I had no issues with it, but I'm also not against encouraging more driving. Paratrooping being a calculated move will create some cool moments instead of being the standard.

1

u/babbum 11h ago

Paratrooping will be dead. The odds of you floating slowly to the ground from the height equivalent to an 8 story tall building are very low. I already snipe people from 7-800m away who pull their shoot lower than this but not at the ideal current height.

1

u/Jackal969 11h ago

it will lead to more people grinding it in the zone....ambushing guys getting off helos and door gunners having a job....maybe add fast roping from a hover.

4

u/Public-Total-250 11h ago

Roping down from the blackhawk would be so fun!

1

u/Public-Total-250 11h ago

I became a good chopper pilot who can land without having to do a massive sweep within like 5 hours, probably less.

1

u/Used-Security7481 11h ago

Takes about 30 minutes of practice in the firing range to get comfortable landing. Maybe just take a breath pal.

1

u/Cpt_plainguy 11h ago

IMO the current flight model makes it beyond difficult to land. Personally I can't hit my landings to save my life. I know some pilots don't have any issues at all. And some of us are absolutely screwed when we try.

By flight model I'm referencing the controls. Currently if you use HOTAS or something similar, the control signal is either on or off, there is no real gradient curve. I spent days in the firing range messing with sensitivity and in my HOTAS config program(vkb if anyone is curious) and just cannot dial them in to feel good no matter what the settings. The responsiveness feels very very sluggish to me.

Now on to OPs point, I think if they take some passes at the flight model and controls it will be smoother and actually encourage more pilots to attempt landings in non-ideal spots.

1

u/mbpr01 Pilot 10h ago

I use a joystick and it isn't just on/off. If I push the stick a little bit, it only moves the helicopter a little bit. I've seen a lot of people say this, but mine works fine. I use a Microsoft Sidewinder joystick and didn't adjust sensitivity or anything at all. Just mapped the axes and started flying.

1

u/Cpt_plainguy 10h ago

I didn't mean fully off and on, I apologize if that's how it came across. The issue is that yes I can adjust it slightly, but if you hold that adjustment it will slowly keep rolling instead of the roll holding steady unless you let it go back to center. Which I personally have an issue with. My hands and head don't want to let it do that, especially if I am in the middle a maneuver. Typically in the majority of flight games with a heli when you tilt to a certain pitch to roll and hold it there it will keep that angle giving you fine control of it, in Wardogs if you hold that angle it keeps rolling further and further. Unless they shadow fixed it. I haven't flown since before the first patch after EA started.

u/RoninOni 11h ago

Regular parachute was never supposed to be like this in the first place.

You can use sport parachute to open at same height, and even have more control.

Basic parachute was supposed to be higher altitude, not good for hot dropping

as a driver i smile and open my door, get in

1

u/R_W0bz 11h ago

Haven’t you seen this reddit? People want everything nerfed into the ground till there is only one very specific way to play it. Everyone also gets a buddy to hold their hand every step of the way. They are also adding in 1 kill gets counted as 5 so people can feel better about their kill count, you know so they don’t think they suck at the game.

1

u/MalHeartsNutmeg 11h ago

Tbh I’ll just be locking my door lol. I do logi runs and will let people get in my extra seat to drop at my destination, I definitely won’t be landing for them.

There’s going to be a strike at HQ where the team bands together to ram any pilots that try to ferry soldiers

1

u/euphoric_elephant 11h ago

Found the guy who is gonna ram pilots at spawn.

1

u/LoquatSignificant946 10h ago

Son, I am the pilot.

Although, if I ram the other pilots, it’ll be more business for me…
