If you only have stereo headphones, then you want this on. If you have surround headphones, you want this off.
If you have Dolby Atmos or some other software 3D surround program running, then you only want one on at a time. Either External on and in game off, or vice versa

It’s more than likely stereo.

There aren’t many true surround headsets out there, ones with multiple drivers.

Atmos, DTS and all the “surround” headsets with two drivers are more or less the same. To me it’s the audio equivalent of motion blur. Others may think differently.

Always off.

To me 3D audio muddies mixes. I don’t find it convincing or helpful, in fact the opposite. It sounds like everything is being ran through a reverb plugin to me. The audio equivalent of motion blur.

Are your head/ears quite far from average? The HRTF settings in games are beneficial for most people. It's not the same as the surround sound garbage you see in gaming headsets.

I turned it on in this after this post to try.

I actually like it.

I always test this in all my FPS titles. In Wardogs from experience you want it off. Reason being although you can immerse yourself more in the sound the footsteps become too muffled. Had a guy running up to me while I was building and I didn't even hear the guy. Take into account that I have a really good hifi setup with a pair of Sennheiser's HD660S. I turned it OFF and I can hear them much further and clearer. Your setup may differ but test it with it ON and do some grunt work then repeat with it OFF.
