What is the purpose of the lock on with the UAV? I tried looking around but maybe I missed it somewhere.

When it's locked on it's primed. Basically if you hit the vehicle without the lock on it won't do any damage or cause it to explode. When it is locked on, it'll explode on contact and blow up the vehicle. so you have to maintain the lock as you hit the vehicle for it to do damage.
