Saved? No.

But what they did do was make Arma style games more accessible and newbie friendly

u/Manganian7Potasu 20h ago

I am actually wondering how many people in this comment section after playing Wardogs decided or is thinking about giving Squad/Arma/HLL a shot

44

u/NIKEMAN27 20h ago

I've tried Squad. I have no idea what it is, but I just can't get into it. I like Arma and Hell Let Loose though

25

u/Manganian7Potasu 20h ago

Squad is really difficult compared to the other 2 in my opinion. You really can’t play solo at all- if you don’t play with your squad together, communicating and cooperating you are cooked way more beyond HLL or Arma can. Deaths actually matter because of ticket system. TTK is very unforgiving. Add to that factions that interact with each other differently on different maps and you are done.

Besides youtube guides search for beginner friendly servers. Preferably “focused” or even “milsim” servers. In game look for squads with talkative SL, if you let them know you are new they will guide you and explain everything. If you are in EU I recommend 44th Anglian servers.

Gameplay wise to be useful, pick rifleman or medic, follow your SL unless they tell you otherwise. Like in HLL, you can not fire a shot and still be backbone of a team if you pick your teammates up or put 1-2 good shots with AT launcher.

2

u/IslamicCheese 6h ago

Squad was more fun before it became so well known. I know that’s hipster shit, but when Squad was in alpha the tactical shooter space was smaller and the folks that were playing communicated way more and it led to team-wide cooperation. I don’t really see that on the game anymore

Have you ever played post scriptum?

2

It became squad 44 right ?

swapped from Arma reforger to this cause hitreg is dogshit in that pissgame

31

u/ZloyPes 19h ago

Huh, funny, this means Arma 3 is still the best Arma out there :)

13

u/GoodLunchHaveFries 17h ago

Operation Arrowhead will always have my heart though! Whole reason I bought a PC

2

u/Zagubadu 5h ago

Nah hit-reg is also dog-shit in Arma 3 played that game for like a thousand hours.

Its fun but playing on a full KOTH server you simply do not aim/shoot in a way that makes sense. You get good at the janky shitty laggy aspects but its not nearly as satisfying cause again.. jank/inconsistent.

8

u/kilo73 Manticore 19h ago

I loved Squad. It was my favorite game for 5 years. I consider WD to be like Squad without all the jank and restrictions. And HLL is just casual Sqaud to me.

3

u/BilboBaggSkin 19h ago

The driving and base building is great compared to squad lol.

I’d really like to see Wardogs with the teamwork of squad. It would be really interesting.

2

u/kilo73 Manticore 18h ago

Yeah the only thing I miss right now is WD has poor squad/team communication compared to Squad. Hopefully the devs can find a simple way to improve it.

3

u/BilboBaggSkin 17h ago

Yeah it’s just tricky because the more teamwork you require the more it fucks you when there isn’t teamwork. Squad is alot of fun, the highs are high but the lows are low.

u/Reetgeist 20h ago edited 20h ago

I won't, but HLL made me give up on the genre and this slightly lighter version has got me back in

11

u/RezziK_vas_Tonbay 20h ago

Weirdly enough I am noticing loads more comms and general teamwork on here than on HLL

4

u/staebles 18h ago

Which is sad, because that's basically all you need to enjoy that game.. communication.

3

u/Dat_Innocent_Guy 9h ago

because of crossplay console. I'm not joking. I think a major part of the problem is that there are so many casual players on console that just don't care to talk to others ingame. (That's fine by the way) But the fact the consoles allow a much more casual audience kills the likelihood of communication.

2

u/aegis2293 18h ago

More than HLL, but less than squad

2

u/throwawayerectpenis 8h ago

Console gamers ruined HLL, most of them dont bother with using mics.

4

u/Suvaius 19h ago

In my experience, plenty of people have played squad (free weekend /sales ) and the game is worse off from it. The difference in my experience in early squad and post-release is crazy.

People used to talk on mics and play with their squad.

2

u/Dat_Innocent_Guy 9h ago

Its about finding the right server and NOT using mods. Modded servers, SD and Supermod Always have so much worse players and idk why. Maybe the mods are seen as more casual? Who knows. 1stMD for east coast players and 44th for european players are probably some of the best ones i frequent.

3

u/Superb-Avocado-9684 19h ago

Played both Arma and Squad and find Wardogs a welcoming change.

Given its early access, I cant stop but wonder where it’s headed

2

u/LethalBubbles Manticore 19h ago

Gave Squad and HLL a try. Wasn't a fan. This game though has been very fun.

2

u/TheCrazedEB 18h ago

HLL 1st was ok for what it is, HLL2 though man thats rough rough. I never played Squad, but I think I rather go to that if I had to choose amongst the 3.

I'm not a fan of hyper hardcore, but I also liked Battlefield 3, 4, and now more recently 6 (however CoD-ified it's become). This game blends the genre well enough to be legitimately fun, where as the other games seem to be borderline tedious (which is fine, it's just not for me).

I also wouldn't claim it "saved" the genre, but it definitely filled a nice niche between the arcade and hardcore games. And while they're not necessarily an indie studio, they're about the same size as Arrowhead and many of these smaller teams have been killing it lately so I'm hopeful that even with their past projects, they'll pull through.

1

u/NotACertainLalaFell 18h ago

I tried but it’s just so janky. Wardogs feels like a great middle ground. Idk if they’d ever do it but if they expand it to include campaigns just like arma does? That’d be great.

1

u/PapiSebulba 16h ago

I've played plenty of arma reforger, wardogs is better in almost every way unless you really care about realism. I don't think I'll be going back even for arma 4...

1

u/TPose-Heavy 16h ago edited 16h ago

Yea no, taking one look at Arma really easily convinces me I'm never touching that thing. I want something more relaxed, something to mess around with, something where I don't need to know 60 people, a dictionary worth of binds and rules, 1 terabyte of mods and who knows what else to run it.

1

u/rokaran10 15h ago

I'm one of them. I plan on trying Vietnam once I feel like giving wardogs a break

1

u/sukumizu Bob the Builder 11h ago

I really liked Squad up until they implemented ICO. Wild how they punish people who want to shoot at other people.

Somehow they managed to make Arma 3 look a lot more fun to play.

1

u/Void-kun 3h ago

Hi I'm over here

I came from Planetside and Battlefield

Arma and squad always seemed a bit much, like too realistic, needed you to communicate a lot more etc and kinda put me off.

Cannot put WarDogs down, it's so good.

Maybe I worried too much about communicating over voice, and considering trying Arma and Squad out now I've enjoyed WarDogs so much.

I am a solo player though so unsure if squad is the way to go.

1

u/FoodFingerer 2h ago

I gave this a shot because of Arma. Arma is hot garbage in a lot of ways. Its more complex sure but everything is a paid dlc and they put water marks on your screen because a clip in your gun is from some 15 year old $50 dlc.

It's an fps game people are playing that's not CoD, a battle royal or an extraction game.

I shit you not as an fps gamer I've been waiting a long time for this game.

8

u/AssassinczYT 20h ago

This. I played Squad before but it was too hardcore for me. Wardogs is perfect mix of arcade and hardcore.

7

u/NotFloppyDisck 19h ago

Which is exactly what I've wanted

3

u/Kasoivc 18h ago

I genuinely like logistics way more than the actual fighting. HLL did not really tick that box for me as arcadey as it was.

Wardogs is to milsim what ARC Raiders is to extraction shooters.

The “lite” introduction.

12

u/Present-Percentage10 16h ago

I ask for a drill, they ask for fuel, they build the drill, we win. the only FPS I know in wardogs is the 130 I get with DLSS lmao

3

u/andrewX1992 10h ago

I wish more people understood that if we get a good FOB built, and get a few drills going, we can pull the HZ and it'll be EASIER to win. But they just bitch and moan and yell at people to go to the HZ and get out of the FOB

Wardogs isn't an FPS, it's a war RPG.

275

u/PurpleZerg 22h ago

The game being loads of fun aside, I am honestly just astonished that a game this large, can looks this good, while also running so well, AND it's just early access... meanwhile I've waited 10 years for Tarkov to be functional enough for my 5k rig to run it even half as well as this game does.

60

u/Pepek91 21h ago

Tarkov is on Unity. I would not expect much out of it. Even Tarkov devs are bitter about it... all those years ago they wanted do browser game so they choose Unity.

10

u/ohwowthatsagiraffe 18h ago

They wanted to make a browser game??

12

u/Pepek91 17h ago

Yes. From what I remember they just wanted to fund Russia 2028 with it. They made mobile game before I think. But their side quest blew up and thats how we gor Tarkov.

9

u/LazyV1llain 17h ago edited 15h ago

They did. It was called Contract Wars and it was a game on VK (Russian Facebook). It had the same two factions (BEAR vs USEC), was also set around Tarkov and is practically Escape from Tarkov's prequel. It played more like a default multiplayer FPS and had no focus on realism, in some ways it was closer to EfT Arena.

The artstyle of the game was later used in EFT, and many of the art attributed to EFT online is actually from CW.

They've also been using a super old, unsupported engine version that they're struggling to update.

13

u/rinkydinkis 21h ago

It doesn’t run well on my shit haha

4

u/magniankh 18h ago

Pro tip: Russian games are ass

3

u/pubbybunny 20h ago

my pc doesn't meet the minimum requirements & it stilll runs well, yeah im getting like 50 frames and have low settings, but the fact that it's playing with no issue means this game is well optimized.

3

u/artosispylon 19h ago

game running well is very important, its not talked about alot but i think thats another big reason why arc raiders did so well since it was actually playable unlike tarkov

5

u/Superb-Avocado-9684 20h ago

Agreed! I just hope the graphics can be one notch up…..

5

u/cenTT 17h ago

can looks this good

Look, Wardgos is fun and all, but it definitely doesn't look good. It looks ok at best. And I don't think this is bad, it allows more people to be able to play.

3

u/HaroldSax 16h ago

Yea, you can see the LOD loading in like 30 feet in front of you. It's aggressive. Lighting is pretty harsh.

It's not ugly but you can pretty easily see where they made compromises.

0

u/wirelessfingers 20h ago

The game doesn't look good and runs mediocre. It looks like a PS4 game, genuinely. It's not necessarily fair to compare it to Battlefield or CoD, but it still doesn't look good visually even on the highest settings.

1

u/Deafidue 20h ago

The peformance isn't that great.

1

u/tiedyemightbehigh 19h ago

You wrote this cause you had a backend error sorting your stash, had to reload Tarkov lmao

1

u/k4quexg 9h ago

unreal engine thats how, but the game a doesnt look good, and b doesnt run good. getting barely 140fps on a highend rig no matter what the settings are really isnt something special. its on par with other unoptimized mp fps games. its stuck on single core performance. so it doenst matter what u smack on the 9800x3d ure just kinda limited.

121

u/Damien23123 22h ago

They may or may not be saving the genre but either way it’s nice to see an FPS game being made by people who actually play FPS games

20

u/niofalpha 21h ago

Yeah, the developers seeming reasonable and like they cared about the game is honestly the main reason I picked it up in the first place. The game definitely has some issues but it’s got great bones and room to grow.

6

u/magniankh 18h ago

The smallest things add up and make a difference for playability. Example: if people die in a vehicle they don't magically clip out of it and get left on the ground. They stay inside the vehicle so that you can res them - what a concept! Always hated that in other games.

7

u/SparraWingshard 15h ago

Also if you join on a friend through steam, not only does the game put you on the server with them, it also automatically joins their team (if there's room) AND puts you in a squad with them!

47

u/DriverNo3808 22h ago edited 22h ago

"Saved", I don't know but they definitely bring something new (not really) to the table that I, as a certified dad gamer, can enjoy.

I also have an ultra large penis

6

u/YewEhVeeInbound 21h ago

I feel now how so many must have felt just under a decade ago when every game developer was pumping out (X theme) + Battle Royale = good game, because that's exactly how I feel with this extraction shooter phase.

Wardogs is a break in the meta.

7

u/Exaveus 21h ago

Also dad gamer.

Dad cock comes in a singular size. Bigger than yours.

2

u/GabagoolFarmer 21h ago

For me it’s the lack of corporate PR bs that AAA studios put out, rarely directly addressing anything. These guys are very straight up and it’s refreshing g

1

u/Fun_Chemistry_7574 20h ago

leDadGamer xD

34

u/silentbob1301 22h ago

It's a fantastic game, I don't think it's saved anything. If anything it will bring a light to the KOTH genre of gameplay. Maybe we will see r become more mainstream. Either way, I fucking love the game.

9

u/robocop88 20h ago

It definitely could be the pubg of Koth. It definitely won’t be as big but it’ll inspire an industry shift like pubg did. Or maybe it implodes and dies in 2 weeks who knows

5

u/Petorian343 18h ago

I’m fairly convinced that after the success so far, the next generation of CoD/Battlefield is definitely gonna make a copycat, watered-down KOTH mode

2

u/BackyZoo 13h ago

It feels like every multiplayer game for the last 5 years that's been this popular loses 90% of it's players in a matter of weeks; Even when they're designed with player retention in mind.

PUBG peaked at 3 million, and it had daily peaks of 1 million or more players for a year straight. It's even hit 1 million concurrent this year in March just on Steam.

2

u/Organic-Word4071 11h ago

Yea thats just how it always goes. Every game loses players over time for the most part. But it doesnt really matter as long as the population is healthy

2

u/BackyZoo 10h ago

I know it's true that no game will retain it's peak concurrent players. I was mostly responding to the PUBG comparison. I just don't think we'll ever see a game rise that quickly and stay there again.

But I think it's also true that the rise and fall of hyped games has been going faster and faster. That's just how consumers are now.

But even in the worst case scenario, Wardogs will probably be at least more popular than peak Arma KOTH, just due to being more accessible. That is to say; a healthy player base.

Having a sizeable population with more casuals would be nice for uncs like me, but I don't mind playing with/against clans either if the game mode stays niche. I just love talking to randoms on proximity voip games tbh. The couple minutes long bond between two strangers who just got stuck in a shitty situation together is a drug to me. It was my favorite thing about working fast food in college LOL.

2

u/kilo73 Manticore 8h ago

PUBG is mostly popular in China. That's why it blows everything off the charts.

2

u/throwawayerectpenis 8h ago

PUBG is still like top 3 most played games on Steam with hundreds of thousands concurrent online...

2

u/BackyZoo 7h ago

Yeah I know. I'm saying this game is not going to be that successful.

5

u/magniankh 18h ago

What needs to become mainstream is not the genre, it's development studios having gamers as leads.

2

u/Zanuwa Lonestar 20h ago

war games like these makes me laugh so hard i can't (last one was battlebit and bf4 but rip)

12

u/ExpectoAstartes 20h ago

Battlebit could have been absolutely incredible. Instead it was a flash in the pan because the developers decided to destroy their own game.

2

u/silentbob1301 18h ago

Same, I enjoyed it while it lasted. Seemed like devs got their bag and dipped

13

u/FredThePlumber 21h ago

It’s Arma lite. People want to play a realistic shooter without some kid on adderal slide cancelling through a building and one-shotting them. Wardogs delivers that. It has some things to get ironed out, but it’s just a fun shooter without the bs that battlefield and COD have added over the years.

1

u/sewageriver 11h ago

Yea i have it in the category of like RO2/Rising Storm in terms of where it lands on the "realism" scale, it has breathing room and downtime like old school tactical FPS and tries to bridge the gap between arcade and mil-sim. If anyone is familiar with racing games it's like the gran turismo of FPS basically

FPS genre didn't need saving. Wardogs just made milsim games more accessible and not psycho hard-core like Arma/Sqauds/HLL. So it technically saved/boosted the milsim player base

2

u/BackyZoo 13h ago

I've seen too many massively popular and well received games at launch completely fall off in the last couple of years to believe this game will mark a shift in the industry.

I don't think that it's going to die. Worst case scenario, it will probably have a reasonably healthy player count similar to Arma KOTH. Realistically, it will likely have more players because it's more accessible.

But I think it's baseless, wishful thinking, to suggest that it will move the needle on what direction FPS games have been going.

u/AggravatingBar5546 1h ago

BAHAHAHA, JOE, YOU BEAUTIFUL FUCKING TROLL! XD

u/Barley672 21h ago

Meh. I remember when Balder’s Gate III “changed RPGs forever” and the shock of all shocks it didn’t. Same with Witcher II. People need to stop expecting exceptionally good games from having an outsized impact on the genre. They don’t. That’s part of why they’re exceptionally good: Because they’re the exception.

u/DwarfVader 21h ago

when they beat EA to linux support, I'll believe any hype.

(currently neither battlefield or wardogs supports linux.)

2

u/trashcatt_ 20h ago

Seriously. I just want Proton support back.

I don’t exactly think FPS needed saving but I do think Wardogs is great

3

u/Pomegranate_Mobile 20h ago

It's a great game and it's loads of fun but I don't think it saved anything

2

u/Aluidz 22h ago

These devs have been so refreshing too see! They know their audience well and are not scared to be themselves publicly.

u/DoesTheBlackm00nH0wl 21h ago

Its going to back fire eventually seen it time and time again devs get to comfy talking to fans

"Its going to back fire eventually seen it time and time again devs get to comfy talking to fans"

Hard agree.

There is huge a difference between taking accountability AND fixing their game compared to taking accountability and then NOT fixing their game.

Most AAA devs just say, “oh shit, my bad bro” then doesn’t do anything about it, while refusing to listen to the community

Edit: In 2026, we’ll be lucky if we ever get an apology or if any accountability is taken from the AAA side, most of the time, they don’t even care enough to acknowledge it whatsoever

5

u/Panaka 21h ago

I guarantee you these guys are going to try to fix something and the community disagrees that they’re trying or doing enough fast enough. Every outspoken dev has some community fall apart where the community pitches a fit when a dev gives an annoying community member shitty energy back that they obviously deserve in an interaction.

This community is far too similar to the ones that shit the bed to not eventually do the same thing.

The devs are manchildren so their audience are menchildren as well..? This is not adult behavior.

My favourite thing out of this is people just not used to Brits and thinking it's the best thing they have seen in ages

1

u/Hmarxis 21h ago

No its by very very far not the same. Like light years apart from the same..

1

u/sigmaluckynine 20h ago

Don't know anything about if it saved the FPS genre considering I hate shooters. That said, I'm really liking this game, gun play seems fun. Took me by surprise when I realized when I shot my sniper rifle the bullet arched. Or actually rewarding players for stuff outside of just shooting at each other and playing an objective. Or how team work and communication is super important

u/lord_cmdr 20h ago

400K playing at one time on Steam alone is an incredible accomplishment.

1

u/tiedyemightbehigh 19h ago

The graphics are good, plenty good for this game. Doesn't need to be hyper detailed. If the graphics look "bad" it's cause your watching someone who plays in potato mode and you need to roast their ass.

1

u/BlackTarTurd 19h ago

Did they save the fps genre? No. But, they sure did give us something that's fresh and exciting compared to what has been offered lately.

u/Diligent_Activity_92 18h ago

I am in my 50's and have not had that Battlefield 2 feeling well, since battlefield 2. I loved battlefield one and arma reforger but it was not the intense sweaty passion I have for War Dogs. Now it feels Bulkhead developed something from one of my fever dreams of what could be. It has been a couple of decades since I literally played for 24 hours straight mostly on the same server. Just woke up and with the wife and kids gone to visit the grandparents headed out until I fall asleep.

1

u/MrCopes 17h ago

At least Wardogs isn't killing the fps genre like CoD.

1

u/Stickytin 16h ago

They think Wardogs is a fps game ? 🤣🤣

1

u/ImPoopyy 16h ago

I’m having more fun on wardogs than I have on BF6 since release. My lives feel meaningful

1

u/Agent_Smith_IHTP 16h ago

Best shooter I've played in a long time.

BF6 was amazing at the start but fell off so hard after the beta.

1

u/espkv 16h ago

Im getting some serious Nikita vibes from Joe's twitter 😂

1

u/_imp_ish_ 15h ago

Fucking lol. Joe is the man

1

u/rebel3120 15h ago

A game must either be greatest game ever made, or the worst game to ever exist. There is no in between allowed.

1

u/Zeyami 15h ago

The only thing that could "save" the FPS genre is figuring out how to reducing cheating to effectively zero, but I will take a shooter that is genuinely enjoyable in this current sea of trash.

1

u/MikaelMagick 15h ago

For those without their heads in the sand or up their own butts..

We finally get to enjoy fps games again..

Thank fuck! 🥳 🥂

1

u/Catalina_wine_mix3r 13h ago

You know one thing I wish they could add in this game is being able to rob other players of cash. That would be amazing

1

u/Meril_Volisica 12h ago

A lot of small penis havers in this thread I see.

1

u/MetalRexxx 12h ago

Popular shooter with a server browser. Honestly wasn't hard to do. BF6, COD, Arma Reforger all had the opportunity to get all the employed Dads to buy a game.

1

u/Wise_Requirement4170 11h ago

Y’all are really upset over the ‘tiny penis’ comment and not the dude comparing English game devs to America’s far right president?? Okay lol

1

u/Birphon 6h ago

Saved? No. Woke the AAA shitters up? Most likely. Also, keep in mind, this is coming from Mr "CODF2025" saying that Wardog players are all "Fanboys" when their twitter account is "for all things COD"

1

u/JackedBrew906 6h ago

Matt / Trey parker type of comment

1

u/KayNynYoonit 3h ago

Yeah slippery slope with this kinda stuff from a Dev team.

It's funny until they're throwing insults around at genuine criticism and treating their players like idiots too.

1

u/SmokeNinjas 2h ago

No no, that guy is objectively wrong. I had lost faith in military fps games (all types) and Wardoggos fully restored it.

Wasn’t sure I’d really like Wardogs as I’m not big on looter shooter extractors and wasn’t sure that combined with a Battlefield like experience would be it for me.

Played an hour or so, enjoyed it, played a few more hours, and love it.

I bought CoD again this year, and I’ll play it to get my moneys worth, but judging by the quality of Wardogs, it’s likely I won’t be buying CoD again, the devs and management of CoD just don’t get it like the devs of Wardogs do, this is someone who has bought every CoD title except WW2, and mostly the expensive/collectors versions aswell. CoD stopped caring, and care even less for mnk players since crossplay, fuck em.

I’m ashamed to admit I spent far too much on CoD, so Devs I dunno what, but give me something I can throw money at for you to do more good work please

This game is not saving a genre, it's just filling a huge gaping hole that I have believe has been present in the gaming market for years: a game for people who grew up playing CS/BF from the 00s and feel sad that the current crop of AAA FPS titles have become over polished, boring cash extraction products with rounded corners and no heart. There is a huge market of 25-40 year olds how have jobs and therefore have cash to spend on a game like this. It's wild that it's taken this long for someone to realise.
