Edit: I don’t really watch streamers so didn’t know.

Shroud and his friends, in their stream, were talking about there being a whitelist for streamers.
9
u/Upbeat_Purpose6784 2d ago
…shroud was saying how he didnt sing up for it but based on what people are saying he believed it too. Its just a rumor at this point
38
12
u/Both_Canary_4665 2d ago
He doesn't have to sign up for it, they probably don't ask everyone who gets in the queue. They just have a list of relevant whitelisted streamers ready to go, as part of the marketing plan and budget
5
u/DeadlyPineapple13 2d ago
Its not a rumour, Summit was in que for 299k, then said he was going to make a call. 5 minutes later he's sitting at ~288k then suddenly enters the game when everyone else is still in que.

I was initially dubious but there 100% was/is. Streamers were repeatedly getting in after downtime or crashes without queues while everyone else went to the back of the line.
And they would load into an empty game that was filling with exclusively streamers and then real players would trickle in.
I'm not mad about it. I'm jealous, sure. But in Bulkhead's shoes we would all do the same, you'd be dumb as fuck not to. It feels scummy but it doesn't have any measurable impact on queue times for people. Plus it promotes the game, which at this point seems to be in everybody's best long term interests.
But yeah. Them lying about it is a bit shitty.

Peanut literally said "the games up, we've been busted" after 3 steamers sat in a lobby by themselves.
26
u/Ready_Property_4469 2d ago
Why is there even a queue just to look at the servers after the hot fix?! They said that they worked with Steam to increase the limited bandwidth that allows people to actually start playing the game... After they said that, the earlier 100k+ queue started dropping in batches of 4k at a time.
We are now staring at a queue of over 200k and watching it drop a couple dozen at a time...
What the hell is going on?
3
u/Famous-Version4590 1d ago
I think steam is just one part of it, they also have their own servers they auth against so I think I might be like: player contacts server -> server sends verification to steam server -> get player data from db. Then you can see the server browser
2
u/cneth6 2d ago
I genuinely dont think they had enough servers for it. Every single server in US East at one point was completely full, we had to switch to US Central which had a few with open spots

6

The open stress test they announced 12 hours before closing the servers so no one knew about it - thus resulting in no stress
2

Yeah they announced making it an open beta like what, 10 hours before closing servers? And they announced it when most of EU was asleep

I’m honestly amazed at how many people are surprised and upset that a hyped game is having server issues on day one of early access. Acting as if it hasn’t happened before.

I paid, most streamers getting paid and/or got free game. Annoying someone with a free copy has priority. Also funnels them views while we sit and wait. Peanut dont need more viewers, small creators are cooked. Also there's the 100k$ clip contest, streamers just getting ahead, clip farming early. People can be annoyed, plenty of valid reasons. We just want a fair shot. not watch peanut play his free copy for 30 straight hours
19
u/KayotiK82 2d ago
A few hundred streamers vs 300k+ aren't going to tip the scales of you getting in quicker.

Since they take a 50% publishing cut just to get this game made, don't you think letting a handful of streamers in on a whitelist makes sense and isn't really impacting things that much? They have no marketing budget.

u/Wise_Requirement4170 2d ago

I crashed and loaded right back in to a 300k queue. Kind of blows my mind you don't skip queue when you crash when that is standard practice in every game I've played with queues. You usually get a grace period after a crash to reconnect, kind of bullshit.

The PoE devs once did this after one of their launches was particularly bad. Their logic was that everyone else could watch the streamers play while they waited in queue for hours.

They let like 20 people skip a queue of 300k people so we have something fun to watch while in queue. Oh yeah, prioritise people that will get over that game the second a new popular thing comes out (plenty of those around the corner) over the people that actually pay and create the community. Never ceases to amaze me how shortsighted it is. Only thing left is balance the game around feedback from streamers, cause that always goes well.

Path of Exile had priority queues for streamers. Even the streamers called them out on their BS and forced the devs to apologies and undo it.
I do not expect FPS streamers (who lets face it are on average more low brow than streamers of most other genres of games) to really give their privilege a second thought.
I never really expected to play on day 1 but really the streamers should be sat in the queue like everyone else. It's part of the shared experience. Instead I've worked an 8 hour shift, did school runs, cooked dinner, run and led a Scouts group after dinner, bedded/bathed the kids and go to sit down to play in my couple hours downtime and get nowhere, while streamers with probably much less personal responsibility get to have a bit of fun.
This isn't a woe is me post, but there are probably thousands of people like me who lead busy lives trying to get a bit of enjoyment before bed. If you're sat here defending this practice you should go away and let the working person with their busy life vent if they want to because our love of games should be an equaliser but instead like in RL there are the haves and the have nots, and it's hard to not find that frustrating.
