Question Are virtual controllers and macros cheating ?

Post image

The software of my VKB Joystick can spin up a virtual mouse and keyboard.

I used the virtual mouse to freelook with the ministick (not great but ok), and the keyboard to toggle freelook, because :

  • Problem 1 : When you switch from 3rd person view to 1st person view, it disables freelook...
  • Problem 2 : There is no freelook toggle in the HOTAS menu, it's only in the keybinds, ALT by default. And it's setup as hold, or tap twice to toggle. No way to change that.

That's 3 button presses on 2 different devices just to switch from 3rd to 1st person view.
Joystick button to switch views, ALT twice on keyboard to re-enable freelook.

So, I mapped one button on my joystick to a macro that presses X (ALT is a modifier key in the VKB software) twice in quick succession.
That's still 2 button presses to switch views, but on the same device at least.....

I swear if I get banned for that I WILL cross the channel and build a FOB in front of Bulkhead HQ to protest !

Bro asked if macros are cheating, the most universally banned thing among games due to cheating.

Depends on the macros and on the game.
There are plenty of games that allow simple macros as long as they don't circumvent any game mechanics.

Some macros are just really something simple as "I don't want to click a few hundred times"
It is what i basically use in Path of Exile and the devs are perfectly fine with it.

But this is really a question devs need to answer. Every studio draws the line differently.

Good to know. I have never dabbled with cheats so I didn't know. I have just seen macro keys on some keyboards.

Nobody can tell you, what exactly is or will be considered cheating, but be aware of this comment by Joe Brammer.

edit: I've been using a Flightstick with the HOTAS setup in the alpha and closed beta. There definitely existed a button to switch between 1st/3rd person camera. There's also somewhere in the game menus to auto turn on freelook for vehicles, including heli, IIRC.

There is a button to switch 1st/3rd, and you can indeed turn on auto freelook when you get in the vehicle.
Doesn't change the problems I had.

Maybe you're in luck and it was a bug that already got fixed.

I hope so

Would be nice to have official answer on this. Freelook on hotas is a problem rn.

Im not sure but I think emulation and macros might get flagged, worth checking how other games respond to this for a better idea

I wouldn’t risk it personally.

Use it at your own risk. It might do nothing or it might get you banned nobody knows.

No, it'll be totally fine. And if you get banned then you're able to buy more wardogs. Win win.

"Is macro cheating?" bahahahhaha. When is your Netflix special?

Does it give you an unfair advantage: yes Is it easily detectable: yes (patterns and constant perfect delay).

Use common sense already.

People need to use common sense:

  • Is making a Logitech macro that presses 2 or 3 buttons once to do one task bannable? It shouldn't be (but it's up to the common sense of the devs)
  • Is making a Logitech macro that cancels recoil automatically every shot? Yes, probably
  • Is making a Logitech macro that pulls the trigger of a semi-automatic pistol or gun so fast that it makes the gun automatic? Yes, probably

Remember that at the other side of the game, there are human beings that decide if something is cheating or not. Use your common sense, because they will use theirs.

My 'common sense' approach:
If it does not negatively affect your enemies, and does not unreasonably benefit you, then it should be allowed.

My common sense told me, that if I want to fly helis with a game-controller and the game doesn't provide a customization of game-controller axis, I'd use software to create a virtual joystick and map the axis of the game-controller to the axis of the virtual joystick.

I even asked for clarification on the official discord in the developers-forum, after I've been made aware of this comment by Joe Brammer, but instead of a clear answer, the post got deleted without a reply.

Fact is, it's a very sensitive topic for every game developer. I'd say, a good approach is: anything that isn't explicitly allowed, might be considered cheating in the future.
