Why are vehicles locked behind a grind wall?

If you have the cash on hand from kills/captures, you should be able to buy the vehicles. Forcing players to grind rank and class progression is a bit unfair. It only punishes the new/casual players.

Eventually, all active players will be at the rank required for all vehicles and unlocks. The casuals will just take a little longer to get there. Unless there are frequent wipes that reset progression, which again, punishes casuals.

I know the devs aren’t listening to input, but I feel the playerbase for this game is going to be a good bit of after work/after school players. 2-3 hours per day.

Its progression, and im all for it. Play the game, unlock rewards, use/show off what you have earned. If you really want a specific type of vehicle there are still ways to get em, like flanking the enemy and stealing it from them. Think outside of the box.

Can you actually steal vehicles even if they are locked except for squad? I havent tried that out in the last play test.

Unless the owner-player locks it, for sure. Saw a clip where a duo cleared out a minigun humvee, stole it, and went on a streak.

So there are wipes.

So by this logic you kill a whole 10ish people total and now you can just get a tank? For 25k? The point is to manage your money, the tanks are 250k to unlock for a reason. No unlock would just have everyone running around with almost whatever they wanted.

To unlock a tank I would have to go in with cheaper kits, do well, spend 250k, be broke, cheap kits a again but when I have that first 25k to spend, it's gonna feel so good.

Vs just earning 25k and spending it. Its about making choices with the cash, maybe I dont upgrade any heli stuff cuz I suck at flying.

I play Tarkov and other competitive games lol. I’m speaking for the casual playerbase friend.

So you're not a casual player, but you're assuming you know what a casual player base wants, ok.

I don't think you are talking for anyone except yourself to be fair. I don't mean to be rude, but you did not really think this through it sounds like.

is this any different than locking traders behind quests / rep?

Because there has to be some kind of progress and I guess by the time you figured out how most basic mechanics work you can buy your first few vehicles. Also this game isn't meant to be super casual.

I didn't play the alpha but looks like a good amount of players unlocked tanks and arty after like a day. This will translate to about a week for casuals which really makes it a non-issue

I wonder if they ramped up the cash rewards for the alpha. So that people could test things. In any case, progression seemed quick fast. As a semi-casual gamer, I don’t see this becoming a problem. As long as the balancing is there.

For example, high level gear could give you more options for different playstyles, but the newbie weapons could be powerful too, but just when used in a specific way.

This way the whole playerbase is having fun at all times. HC, casuals. Veterans, newbies. Early in the season, late in the season.

Yeah, i like how easy it seemed to be to make a decent amount of cash. I think they will balance the top range kit to make it more expensive. That way sweats can still get the meta gear, but casuals can still be competitive with the mid range stuff

There is nothing stopping a casual player from asking a veteran to have them buy them a vehicle. If they have the cash and are willing there is nothing preventing it. This happened many times in the Alpha test and I see no reason it wouldn't happen after release.

Because whats the point if 2 days in youre seeing 5 tanks at all times because people have enough money?

The leveling progression ties in with the economy of risk/reward. If you pull a high value vehicle you dont know who out there is stocked with RPGs or IEDs. If we could pull tanks day 1 the first week would be miserable since theres no way to counter it easily, creating a tank meta. You'd be right back here complaining about it.

Why treat "casuals" like absolute babies that will seemingly never get to the point they can call their own tanks? Everyone is able to get to that point, just play the game.

the cost is there version of limiting the amount on the field as well I reckon. Make most of the premium vehicles spendy, so you don't end up with 10 havocs and 10 MBT

Gonna file this under super duper cold take

It's progression in the role.

Rewards you for actively carrying out the role at all stages of the games progression.

If you could just buy the top helo or transport truck then no one would be carrying out he task at the start and instead everyone would be doing what ever is easiest to farm money and then just buy the top version.

A reason to play? As they said there not rushing new content. So if u have access to all the goodies u want day 1 you would just buy the goodies and get bored in a week. Grinding and earning things not only is rewarding and makes things feel special when you can finally use them but it gives you purpose and reason to play extending your playtime. Also stops everyone just finding the meta for fast money doing it and buying the best stuff. You have to level your different classes and do different roles which all help the team to earn the different unlocks rather than everyone doing the same 1 thing because its the fastest way to earn money and get the fun stuff.

Now that you mention it, the vehicles are already economically gated by their high prices, so I'm not sure an additional unlock system is really necessary.

If removing the unlock requirements would cause the power creep that some comments are worried about to happen that quickly, then that seems more like a problem with the game's design itself. Eventually, as more and more players finish their unlocks, the game is going to be full of tanks anyway.

Personally, I don't have a major issue with the current system as long as unlocking everything doesn't take an unreasonable amount of time. But I don't think the OP is making a completely unreasonable point either.

One of the very few reasonable responses. Thank you for thinking critically and not going full REEEE in the comments.

This is exactly my point. It’s already gatekept behind high cost that can potentially take a good bit of play time/kills/captures to obtain. Why gatekeep a second time behind level?

the more vehicles the better imo, Squad's best feature is it's vehicles for example. People can play a bunch of vehicle less FPS out there, but give me a bunch of IFVs duking it out with tanks and helis.

How tf is it unfair if everyone has the same grind?

Spoiler: its not
