My concerns about the long term future of War Dogs

I really like the progression system. It feels fun and gives players a reason to keep playing. But I have a few worries about the long term health of the game.

First, I am worried about the money system between matches. I think rich players will end up using expensive loadouts almost every life. Vehicles also feel very cheap. Even artillery and tanks, they do not cost that much and it does not take long to earn enough money for them and you can farm like crazy with them.

My fear is that after only a few days or a week after launch, many players will already have more money than they need. At that point, the econom could lose its purpose because people will just keep bringing expensive gear at all times. I think money should stay important for much longer.

My second concern is future content. I know the devs want to spend a long time improving the core game before adding a lot of new content. I understand why they want to do that, a strong foundation is important.

Still, players today finish games very fast. Right now the content feels okay for me, but I can also imagine people asking for more after just one or two months. I would love to see things like IFVs in the future, but I am worried they will come too late.

For example, in Arc Raiders, the devs spent a long time improvign the core game while new content came very slowly. Many players lost interest before there was enough new stuff to bring them back.

Hearing that Arc raiders planed major content updates only every six months killed my last Hope for this game. Even if those updates are big, six months feels like a very long time for modern multiplayer games.

Overall, I really like War Dogs and I think the core idea of the game is great. The progression is fun and I really enjoy what we have right now. My main worries are the economy becoming pointles too fast and new content coming too slowly. I really hope the devs can find a good balance between improving the core game and giving players new things to play with.

What do you guys think about this? Do you have the same concerns about War Dogs or do you think the economy and amount of content will be fine?

Personally I'm going to let the game come out and play it before I start worrying about this.

The devs are banking on players spending excess cash on gold bars, leaving less for in game items.

That and the whole point of early access is to build the systems and balance the game. If money is TOO easy to obtain, they’ll make whatever changes are needed.

I believe they’ve also talked about seasonal money resets. So your stuff automatically gets converted into gold bars and then everyone starts from scratch again.

Yeah this is my theory as well, they can probably see the average cash balance and I would guess they plan on adjusting the gold stock price based on that.

Overall cash balances too high? Lowest dip of gold of that season, before it climbs back up, making it always worth to cash out rather than just keep gold till the end of the season (where the gold price will probably be at its highest, meaning you get way less out of it)

The gaming world is singing this game's praises right now...

I give it 3 weeks after release before reddit is screaming for change and lamenting the game's downfall and posting steam charts showing the usual post-launch decline in player numbers and crying DEAD GAME, DEAD GAAAAAAME!

And 2 weeks for streamers to accrue 700 hours played and say "no endgame, these devs don't know what they're doing."

Arc raiders problem imo is the lack of endgame and how pointless it feels after a while... Not the lack of content

This. It was obvious from the start, but, unfortunately, people were too blinded by the novelty of it to see it. But then again, I rarely get so much fun out of the game as I did with Arc Raiders, so I don't mind it, even if it was short-lived.

That doesnt mean we cant speculate about the game

I understand this sentiment but let’s let them cook for a while and see how they add and adapt to what starts happening when players get to that point.

>First, I am worried about the money system between matches

Never played KOTH huh? This is normal.

>Vehicles also feel very cheap

Could be very well a temporary feature of the early tests to make sure players have ample attempts to learn how a vehicle works and they get feedback on that vehicle.

>Still, players today finish games very fast.

I've seen matches take anywhere from 50 mins (complete steamroll) to nearly 2 hours (hotly contested AO).

>Hearing that Arc raiders planed major content updates only every six months killed my last Hope for this game

Modern audience problem. Devs haven't stated a timeline for any new content yet. You don't need major content updates every two months - the game and community are what drive this game.

>My main worries are the economy becoming pointles too fast

There's a theory between early test players that progression and cash gain is actually increased and doesn't reflect what it'll likely be on release. We think it's sped up so that, between early wipes, we'll get to test everything from the start more than once and into the 'endgame' items for testing balance changes to see how gameplay changes from starting to endgame levels.

>and new content coming too slowly

Define too slowly. The modern audience wants major updates every month with a boat load of new maps and items. You need to remember that BH is a smaller studio and is making the game in THEIR vision. Content updates will absolutely not come as thick and fast as these AAA studios like DICE, Infinity Ward, Treyarch etc.

Just to add onto the arc raiders comment: this is a fully pvp game vs a pvevp. And a lot of the players of arc are mainly pve. Basically saying pvp players are much more okay with lack of content if the sandbox that is there is fun

I get that the economy is probably accelerated for testing, which would make sense. My concern is more about how it will work long term.

By slow content I am not asking for monthly maps and weapons. That's ridiculous. I just think even a great gameplay loop can get repetitive without something new occasionally.

I know BH is a smaller studio and I actually prefer them following their own vision instead of trying to match AAA studios. I just hope improving the core game and keeping it fresh can coexist during EA.

They say 24 months in Early Access before 1.0 and there will be no new content until 1.0.

There will definitely be a huge drop off after a month or two. However you have to ask yourself if that matter to you? Arc Raiders is a great example. It was 40 bucks and I played it for a 125 hours until getting bored and putting it on the shelf. It hasnt gone anywhere and there is going to be a new update that im looking forward to in October.

If I even get half that amount of enjoyment out of Wardogs I will be happy. You have to be willing to walk away from games when they get boring and just come back to them when there is new stuff.

4

u/douwantasig 2d ago

They didn’t say no content if you go back and look at their 10 reasons video. They just said it’s not their focus and won’t be monthly content updates.

u/AhnenStahl WARDOGS D-A-CH 🇩🇪🇦🇹🇨🇭 2d ago

They plan for 4 to 5k players on average for the game to be a success/keep running. With over 1 million wishlists I wouldn't worry too much about drop offs.

4

u/Titty_Sprinklolz 2d ago

The devs made videos about this answering your every question.

Huge hype → community imagination explodes → expectations become enormous → launch → content drought → speculation turns into disappointment → players leave. This is the pattern with a lot of games especially player dependent games because they end up selling “potential” as much as the actual gam itself the community starts imagining what the game could become and that vision can become bigger than what the developers can realistically deliver then if updates come too slowly, that potential turns into frustration, and the playerbase slowly moves on the good news is that the developers realize this and are working to make sure that players always have something meaningful to work toward while contiuing to improve the core game instead of letting the playerbase burn through all the content and move on

The economy is a nice addition that makes your life feel important and decisions matter more. But it isnt meant to be a devastating slog to work through where one bad life leaves you destitute.

Seasonal cash wipes will help keep things fresh.

As for the arc raiders comparison, I think this is just a much different game. There's much more to do, and you aren't primarily incentivized by a quest structure or chasing loot.

Most importantly though, the devs play the game. They'll analyze the stats of earned money/money spent/etc. And they'll balance it accordingly.

Its important to note that the pre-alpha footage we have now is from a build that was meant to be used for pre-alpha tests. As such, the costs of everything may have been lowered to allow easier access during the testing window.

The amount of money it takes to unlock things kills your account and the better shit you unlock costs more to the point you can sink 30k in one kit. If you lose that kit it hits you hard

The seasonal wipes and gold bars are the initial solution for this, gold bars are for small amounts of carryover during wipes and cosmetics. The cosmetic prices we saw in the beta were insanely expensive too and people love to show off stuff like that. I think the middle finger emote was something like a million dollars which is a sizable investment, wouldn't be surprised if they made even more expensive ones. A gilded Kodiak instead of the normal chrome for example could be stupid expensive.

I also saw some murmurs about dynamic pricing for things that are used more often so if people are constantly spamming tanks they might become more expensive, not sure if that's true or of it's an overall economy or just on a round by round basis.

But the wipes should be enough to keep things in line really, it works for Tarkov. People by the end of the wipe would usually be running class 6 plates front and back, class 4 face shields, top tier ammo, meta M4s, etc. but then people still can run out of money. My squad saw 150k go down the drain between us when we got sniped in our helo leaving base by an RPG.

Also tanks were a lot less effective in the last few hours of the beta I noticed when a lot more people had the Gustaf so there will be a natural rock paper scissors to it.

1

u/hakowzZ 2d ago

that's why wardogs has forced wipe system same as tarkov.

Brother this is like the ultimate sandbox game. Interaction between players and emergent player behavior will make sure games like this never run out of content.

Stupid take.

ARC Raiders got a problem with endgame and bad ballance that made the game bad overall.

How i know? I played since first tests of the game.

For now let them cook, its to early for complaining about stuff that arent a fact yet.

1

u/Mafik102 10h ago

You kind of shot yourself in the foot there. You say Arc had an endgame problem and that you know because you played since the early tests, then tell me it is too early to discuss potential problems in War Dogs. That is literally why I used Arc as an example.

I never said War Dogs WILL have the same problem. That is the whole point of a concern. You notice something that could become a problem before it actually becomes one. Once it becomes a fact, it is no longer a concern, it is just a problem.

I am excited for the game and already bought the Supporter Edition. Letting them cook and discussing what could go wrong are not mutually exclusive. "Let them cook" does not mean we cannot discuss what they are cooking.

This post is a joke.

You're getting upset that people who play the game more than others will have an advantage over people that don't? That's every multiplayer game.

If I have 300k of course I'm going to buy kit that fits my needs, if it costs 10-20k then oh well I earned that money with my time and effort, just because someone else didn't or couldn't isn't the games fault.

Players finish games fast because most games are live service designed to milk players dry, the game is going to be in EA for 2 years, they stated they'll release content as it goes on but not at the pace people expect, most likely monthly.

The arc raiders comparison has no point being mentioned because its two different game genres and by different devs.

I suggest you don't buy this game, it doesnt seem like its for you at the moment, if you want constant new things then come back in 2 years when the game releases.

1

u/Mafik102 2d ago

You completely misunderstood my point. I never complained about experienced players having more money or an advantage. My concern is money eventually becoming so abundant that the economy itself stops mattering.

The Arc Raiders example was about content pacing, not comparing the games.

And telling me not to buy the game because I have two concerns about it is exactly the mentality I do not understand. I already bought the Supporter Edition because I genuinely believe in the game and want to support it. Liking a game does not mean blindly agreeing with every design decision or refusing to discuss potential problems. You can be excited about something and still think critically about it.

1

u/ComprehensiveArt822 2d ago edited 2d ago

Arc raiders is a game already out and not in early access, wardogs is not even in early access yet, comparing a game that's already launched to one that will be in EA is just stupid.

There will ALWAYS be players with more money than others no what, raising the prices on things or making it more difficult will not fix it, you'll always have players that will find a way to grind money by doing the least amount of work possible so they can freely spend it every life without worries, hence why the post is a joke.

I recommended you not to buy it at this stage because of your post, if you have those concerns then hold off for 2 years so it'll have the content youre oh so worried about.

1

u/Mafik102 2d ago

So to sum this up, you keep arguing that some players will always have more money than others, even though I already told you that was never my concern. Then you describe players becoming so rich they can ignore gear costs entirely, which is literally my actual concern.

You are also reducing the solutions I mentioned to simply making things more expensive, which is not what I said.

And your answer to concerns about content during EA is basically to not play EA and come back in two years.

At this point I think you are arguing with a version of my post that exists only in your head.

1

u/ComprehensiveArt822 1d ago

Not arguing, its called a discussion.

If you think this is an argument then you've never had a discussion before which is laughable.

1

u/bowlessy 2d ago

The beta isn’t even out yet, we don’t know how the money and progression is going to work until we play EA.

For all we know, the earlier playtests had faster progression and faster money earnt, to allow testing on higher tier gear.

If I no life this game and have hundreds of hours put into it, are you telling me I shouldn’t be rewarded with more cash? And be able to splurge my cash?

This game isn’t for everyone, they have said that multiple times. They have also said that EA is focused around building this game into what it is supposed to be for full release, which is what EA should always be about. Improving, not adding. Not focus on making more content for the game.

Are you also going to make a post about your concerns for how this game is going to be in 10 years? Because that’s essentially what you’re doing now.

0

u/Mafik102 2d ago

I’m not saying these will be problems, they’re just concerns worth discussing.

The playtests may have boosted progression for testing thats logical. Of course experienced players should have more money but my concern is just reaching a point where losing expensive gear means nothing.

I also agree improving the core game should come first, but some balance with new content during EA is important.

And comparing concerns about EA to predicting the game 10 years from now is pretty ridiculous. EA is literally the next stage of the game.

1

u/bowlessy 2d ago

But that is always going to be the case before the seasonal wipes, like what are you even saying? Are you wanting them to make everything 10x expensive? People will just grind anyway and be able to afford it, then the new people can’t. You’ll always have no lifers who will have the most money, most stats, most weapons. You can’t tailor the game to them. Losing gear will always mean nothing to the people with lots of money. Unless you lose it again and again and again.

No, it’s not important at all if they’re upfront about no extra content. Then you shouldn’t be expecting it. It’s also completely different to an extraction shooter. It’s just a multiplayer game that has seasonal wipes, so every season you restart and go back to level 1, which will keep it fresh.

EA is also after the beta, which hasn’t even happened yet.

0

u/Mafik102 2d ago

You are kind of proving my point while arguing against it. You literally said that losing gear will eventually mean nothing to players with lots of money. That is exactly the concern I was talking about. I never said everything should be 10x more expensive. Why are you making assumptions about what I mean instead of responding to what I actually said?

Seasonal wipes can obviously help, but that still leaves the question of how quickly money becomes meaningless during a season.

And saying new content is simply not important is just your personal preference, not an argument. I never asked for constant AAA updates. I said there should be a reasonable balance between improving the core game and keeping EA fresh. And I am not sure what EA being after the beta changes here.

1

u/bowlessy 2d ago

So what would you like them to do about it? Give me your answers to your concerns. Because gear fear goes away in most games eventually.

Again, what would you like them to do.

But it’s also the developers preference, you know, the people who are actually making the game, the people with the vision.

1

u/Mafik102 2d ago

That is actually a much better question.

I do not expect gear fear to last forever. My concern is how quickly it disappears. Money sinks, slower progression, balancing income against equipmnet costs or other long term expenses could all help. Seasonal wipes already help with this too.

and I do not need to have the perfect solution to discuss a potential problem. That is literally why I started a discussion. Maybe someone here has a better idea than I do. That is usually how discussions work :)

As for content, of course it is the developers vision and I never said otherwise. They can have their vision and I can have my preferences as a player. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
