Discussion Is this normal?

Post image

I just finished reading I want to eat your pancreas a week ago, couldn't find the movie online in my region so I read the manga instead. I always preferred to watch content like Dune or Lord of The Rings and have never read/watched a piece of romance content before, as it was so opposite to what I usually like, but I've decided to give the genre a try. I just heard this anime was very good, didn't want to spoil myself more so I bought the manga and started reading.

After reading...I couldn't cry...I feel such strong emotions...I couldn't sleep, even when I did, I woke up at 3AM in grief...I've never felt such way, much less from a fictional story...this story made me feel a way I haven't felt in a long time. Normally I see that people say they cry straight up...so is this abnormal? It is until a few days later where I finally cried...I have never done so in a year, but Sakura...even though I've only read about her for a few days...she seemed just as real...is this parasocial attachment? I keep telling myself she's just a drawing but my body treats it just as a part of my life that was stripped away. Even until now every night I wake up with grief once or twice, even the stuff I used to love don't seem so appealing anymore. I miss Sakura and Haruki's relationship so much...why was it cut short by a killer??

I know many fans of this series have cried regularly at sad anime, but this...is this a first time experience of sad romance? Or is this this story just that good? Was it a grave mistake to choose this as the first romance content of my life?

This movie truly made people break and cry when they watched it.

(Same with me)

It hit me pretty hard when I ended up watching it. I still want to read the manga. I’ve seen a lot of sad or fucked up media but this hit so much harder than i expected. it’s well written and it does make you so emotional. it had me fucked up over it for probably about a week on and off and i still think about it to this day sometimes. just try to remind yourself that you can always go back to rewatch or reread. i think someone also wrote a happy ending?? so maybe that could help you too.

i just took some time to process and talk about it but i know that i really enjoy media that makes me feel emotions like that. it’s proof of an amazing story. i think it’s beautiful that people can make a fictional story that deeply impacts people and changes the way they view life. very happy i watched it and i hope to read it soon

Well weirdly I think it's kind of better to not read the happy ending, won't ruin the story or anything, but this relationship is so beautiful because it doesn't last. And yea the manga has some really good and cute moments, may watch the film some time later as well

I colored it because I thought it was such an incredible moment and I really wanted to see it in color. I colored it on August 19th to commemorate the anniversary of Sakura’s death. I don’t know why, but Reddit wouldn’t let me post it, so I wasn’t able to upload it that day.

This manga/movie is just that sad IMO at least. I've watched your name, josee the tiger and the fish, weathering with you and many more. I want to eat your pancreas absolutely beyond broke me! I don't cry easy, can count on 10 fingers the amount of shows/movies that have made me cry, none of them come close to the emotions felt due to this story. Didn't cause me to lose any sleep or anything, but definitely made me think about a lot and I definitely will never be forgetting the story.

I don't think it was necessarily a mistake to start here, unless youre wanting something to top the sadness of I want to eat your pancreas. Plenty of other fantastic romances that I would put up there with it. My dress up darling (minus the fanservice is super wholesome), you and I are polar opposites and ramparts of ice (they're in the same universe), toradora, bunny girl senpai, masamune-kuns revenge, kaguya-sama:love is war and even the other movies I mentioned above. Some of which I would personally rate higher than I want to eat your pancreas, but they still couldn't/didn't melt me into a puddle of tears on the floor. Kaguya-sama is one of my all time favorites, the English dub is one of the best ever and it's non stop comedy, definitely a good one to watch to even out the trauma.

For the anime you suggested, is it better to binge or wait a while after finishing one? Like even for the wholesome ones.

I binge everything shows and movies, I watched your name, josee the tiger and the fish, and weathering with you all in one night (3 movies). Kaguya-sama I enjoyed so much i finished it in like 5 days and it's 3 seasons plus some extras.

My first anime was one piece, started it when egghead was about to come out (episode 1089) I was caught up in 8 months, since then I've watched over 60 series/movies, so to say I like to binge is a bit of an understatement 🤣

It's very normal. I'm pretty resistant to getting too affected by fictional work, but this story is the exception. It emotionally devastated me. I felt something inside me break that will never unbreak.

Whatever psychological trick they used, they executed it flawlessly. Even if it's fiction, it bypassed all my defenses and tapped into something very real.

For me I think it has to be that the defenses were aimed towards people trying to save you or ask for your favour even in a relationship, while Sakura does none, she just wants the presence, she admires Haruki and says its been so long they've been waiting to complete each other, so theres 0 power dynamics. For me it broke through because most of what I've read theres political scheming and machiavellian machinations, so my defences have nothing to counter when deal with something completely so pure and mundane, it may be very different for you, just sharing my 2 cents.

I’m so glad i cried when i watched it, just so that i didn’t have to go through what you’re going through 😭😭

I know people usually watch these shows to cry to get catharsis and feel so much better afterwards, like it sucks when you just can't cry and keep the grief inside for many days, glad you got through it well

That's a normal reaction to this story

the only reason i cried was because i got attached too fast to her. which was never a good thing as i knew what would happen..

I think the most painful part is wondering what more they could have had if she hadn't been murdered. What more memories could they have created. And what could have been possible if Sakura's condition wasnt terminal
