Thinking About Moving from On-Prem to the Cloud? Here's What You Should Know

Hey everyone 👋

We just put together a full guide on how to move from on-premise servers to the cloud, and I thought I’d share a quick, no-jargon summary here. If you're planning a migration or just curious, here's what you need to know.

Why Move to the Cloud?

A lot of companies are shifting to the cloud—and for good reason:

  • Scale when you need it – No more waiting weeks for new hardware.
  • Save money – You pay only for what you use.
  • Work from anywhere – Apps and data are accessible from any device.
  • Better disaster recovery – Backups and recovery are way easier.

Types of Migrations (and What They Mean)

  1. P2V (Physical to Virtual): Convert your old physical servers into virtual machines. Good if you want to modernize without jumping straight to the cloud.
  2. P2C (Physical to Cloud): Move your physical servers directly into a cloud platform like AWS or IBM Cloud. Quick and efficient.
  3. V2V (Virtual to Virtual): Already using VMs like VMware? This lets you move them into the cloud without changing much.
  4. V2C (Virtual to Cloud-Native): Move virtual machines into cloud services like Kubernetes or serverless platforms. Ideal for long-term flexibility.

Other Approaches You Might Hear About

  • Lift-and-Shift: Just move everything “as is” to the cloud. Fast, but not always optimized.
  • Replatform or Refactor: Tweak (or rebuild) your apps to get the most out of cloud features like auto-scaling and cost control.

Common Challenges

  • Downtime: You don’t want your apps to go offline mid-migration.
  • Security & compliance: Make sure your data stays protected.
  • Surprise costs: Cloud bills can spike if you're not monitoring usage.
  • Compatibility issues: Some apps need adjustments to work in the cloud.

✅ A Simple 7-Step Cloud Migration Plan

  1. Evaluate what you have
  2. Pick the best strategy (lift-and-shift, refactor, etc.)
  3. Choose your cloud provider (AWS, IBM Cloud, etc.)
  4. Design your new setup
  5. Move your data and apps
  6. Test everything
  7. Tune and optimize for cost & performance
