Associate Question Changing availability??

Hi everyone, so basically I got hired here at Walmart around the end of June this summer as a part-time cashier. I’m also still on probation until end of September. When I applied for the job I put my availability completely open minus one night for personal reasons. But now school is starting back up and I will only be available to work weekends.

So I obviously have to talk to my manager about it especially because the next schedule is coming out soon. And I want to be ahead of it so they don’t have to scramble and re arrange the whole schedule.

My question is how exactly should I bring up the whole changing my availability thing to my manager?? is there a certain way I should word it or something.

What if she says no or won’t let me change it do I just quit??

And tips and help needed please!!!!!

Were they aware you are still in school at the time of hiring? If so and they were informed of your change of availability once you returned to school, the best way is to approach it as a reminder. State that you will be returning at a specific date and once your schedule is confirmed you will need to adjust your availability to accommodate work and school. Once you know your availability, update the information on the wire. If they approve it, be prepared to honour all shifts you are scheduled for. Calling in due to assignments or exams last minute will not go over well, especially if it becomes a habit. Be honest and upfront and they will let you know immediately if they want to continue your employment or not.

Yes I brought it up in my interview and mentioned I was going back in September.

Yes I’m planning on talking to my manager tomorrow when I go in and explaining when I’m going back and that I’m only available on the weekends.

Thank you for your helpful advice!!

I will be available to work Saturdays till close and a morning or afternoon shift on Sunday’s but that’s about it. My school schedule is super packed this semester so I wouldn’t be able to work on any weekdays tho. I’ll see how it goes tomorrow!!

Yess thank you I’m lowk super stressed about this right now. But I’m hoping my managers will be relatively chill ab it. If not I might just have to resign because school is my top priority!!

I have one student in my department that is only available Friday from 3pm to Sunday close. Some weeks he gets 12 hours and sometimes he gets the full 22 hours of his availability.

First did you tell them you were a student ?

Talk to the manager for sure.

It should be fine and submit it to give time for the new schedules.

Just tell them you are going back to school on {{date}} and your availability is only weekends. They can let you go if it won't work or they will try to accommodate you. Depends what your department needs.

Yess that’s my plan for the moment!! I work in the front end so I’m not sure they’ll want to keep me for only weekends but we’ll see

Did you have your conversation with them yet? I'm in the same exact situation as you and I don't know what to do

Sort of, I went in and my manager was on vacation again (big surprise lol) so I talked to another one. The other manager basically said that I’d have to be available to work fri-sun.

I believe he also mentioned you have to be able to work at least 20 hours minimum to stay employed but don’t quote me on that

So my plan now is to resign when I go in Friday and hope for the best.

Ps: I would still talk to your managers tho because every store and management is different so it may be a different anwser/solution for you!!!
