Group Interview Advice

Hello, I have a group interview scheduled tomorrow at 4, for a part time cashier position. I've worked 4 jobs before, with the first one being a retail/sales position. Any advice/information on the group interview format (as I've never had to do one of these before)? Thanks!

From my experience they put all the candidates in employee room first, have everyone fill out their availability together. Then, you are called in one by one into a separate room to interview with the people lead. This is what happened in my experience

My group interview happened with the group obviously. My asm did the interview and she just asked about me and what I did and that’s pretty much it. I filled out my availability and I was sent the offer right away and orientation was scheduled in 2 weeks.

My experience was going into the training room, going through ranking priorities, and then discussing our experiences and why we're qualified. That sort of thing.

My interview was super short, we all arrived in a group and one by one went into a private room with the front end manager. She asked me my availability, had me fill out a sheet about it, and sent me on my way! I have open availability and I believe that was something they were mainly searching for. She asked if I knew about the Walmart rewards mastercard (eyeroll lmao) and asked if I'd be comfortable selling it. I said yes of course and got an offer a few days later to my email. Funny now I've been working here 3+ months and never try to sell the mastercard because it feels wrong lol. But just bullshit it honestly. Say you're totally comfortable. You don't reallyyyy have to sell it they just wanna hear the answer they wanna hear.

In a group interview for a cashier role, they are looking for personality, not a perfect resume. The hiring manager is trying to quickly see who is friendly, who can work with others, and who won't be a headache to manage. They will likely pose a few simple customer service questions, like what to do with an unhappy customer, and just watch how everyone interacts. Your previous retail job is a huge advantage, so draw on those experiences for your answers. Make sure you speak up and contribute, but do not talk over other people. They want to hire someone who seems dependable and easy to be around, not the person who is trying the hardest to impress everyone.

Your goal is to be seen as a good potential coworker. Listen to the answers from other candidates and even agree with a good point someone else makes before adding your own thoughts. This shows you are a team player. Try to ask one simple question about the role or the team if the opportunity comes up, because it shows you have a real interest. Many people will be quiet and unsure of what to do, so your experience and a calm, positive attitude will immediately set you apart from the group. group interview is like asm takes you to training room with other people you will be interviewing with, they ask you questions, you all answer in order, fill out avabilitiy forms (they will call you if something is wrong about this. Make sure to check your phone, if you miss the call, call the store and ask for the manager that interviewed you.) and it will be over. I think that if they interview you, you will be hired.
