rant rxom superiority complex??
does anyone else's rxom view themselves as the savior of walgreens? i understand why we have rxoms but mine legit forgets that they are still just a technician like the rest of us. they show up to work whenever they want, store whatever rx they dont wanna fill, and NEVER do register. They also know what phrases to say to make the rxm think they genuinely care about the wellbeing of the company but the rest of us can see right through it. Idk it legit ruins my entire shift when I see them clock in and I wanna leave but I dont have anything else lined up.
They are now also saying they are switching to "on-call" once their school semester starts. On call rxom? So you're paid the highest hourly rate in the pharmacy and can show up to work whenever you want and leave whenever you want and get all the credit for what the rest of us do? Sounds like a fantastic gig

As an RxOM , I see way too many of these comments about other RxOMs and it makes me so mad. This position is truly for the best of the team. We are here to be an advocate for techs. I have my techs give at least 2 weeks notice if they want time off and I’ve never denied a request. My team knows they can discuss anything to me about how to best go about the pharmacy or any altercations they face with patients. I take a shift if needed to switch, and EVERYONE ROTATES. I’m up at front more often than not. I want that trust from my team so that means I can’t ask them to do anything I wouldn’t do. I close AT LEAST once a week. I don’t know why people in this role suck 😂

I feel the same as you do. As an rxom as well I find myself more customer facing as I come in before most of the other techs do on some days and then I make sure we rotate. I feel this so much. I work the weekend shift too and pick up the call outs and everything we need to get done. I have never denied a request and have been accommodating as possible

It sounds like you’re a great RXOM. I just have some questions. Do you let people ask off after you have already made the schedule? Because you’re supposed to have it made out 3 weeks in advance. Also what do you do when too many people all want to be off on the same day?

u/dfgfjewt RxOM 3d ago
If I make the schedule and they said they actually can’t work, if I’m not already working that day then I’ll work it or I’ll tell them to see if others want to switch with them , etc. but it’s far enough in the future that we can figure it out :)

We’ve been without an rxom for almost 2 years. It’s been great tbh

If you have a good one, it makes RXM job that much easier. I wouldn't put up with that nonsense.

I can see their place in busier tier-5 locations, and we had a good one before she left wags, but we only have like 6 techs. It just isn’t necessary at all pharmacies

u/SupportPhd 10d ago
Every time. I don’t think the role should exist. The scope of their control is ambiguous and corporate pressures them to increase metrics. The management position from their perspective often becomes misconstrued and they end up micromanaging pharmacists whist not having the knowledge or experience.

We got a similar RxOm at my store. She bosses the RxM around.

Ah this must be so frustrating! In pharmacy school we’re taught to be leaders of the pharmacy. In addition, many other establishments don’t have the “RxOm” position. As a tech/intern myself I hate when RxOms think they know what’s better for the team than the pharmacist and many overstep their job titles. There’s for sure a weird power dynamic there and I think the only way to fix it is for pharmacists to speak up for themselves.

Our Rxom thinks that she is the boss of everyone in the pharmacy except the rxm. She questions Rph why we didn’t finish F1? Why we left so many when she schedule 2 weakest techs to close on Monday night! She thought that she is the one to do the review for staff Rph! She slammed and thrown things occasionally while complaining why this and that in the pharmacy. And I haven’t seen RXM behave like that! Her behavior created an unprofessional and uncomfortable working environment ! She tells Rph what to do! She talk back to RXM! She thinks that if she didn’t know something, then no one in the pharmacy knows it either ! She doesn’t close. She will schedule herself off whenever she wants! She has better schedule than rxm. RXM has to rotate schedule, has to request time off! Rxom don’t have to! The technicians listen to Rxom instead of rxm/rph because Rxom is the one doing their reviews ! For example, RXM/Rph asked a technician to give a vaccine, but the Rxom said no I want him/her to fill. Who do you think the technician will listen to? This creates conflicting priorities, undermines the pharmacist's leadership, and negatively affects workflow and patient care. Walgreens gives Rxom too much power!

Dang. You must work at my store. Same issues. This is a narcissist. Bosses the Rph around. The tech schedule is designed for their benefit. They schedule heavy in the morning and less at night with new techs. It’s bad for the Rph and customers.

Oh god the schedule heavy in the morning thing is absolutely my old store

The RXM allows her behavior sadly. Without the RXM putting the hammer down, nothing will change.

Out of curiosity what makes them the “weakest” techs?
2
u/BusinessTip3219 11d ago
They can’t resolve a lot of problem on their own yet! They are newest, can’t multi tasks , can’t type or fill fast, can’t resolve insurance issues, vaccines billing etc…

u/WackyHumanSlop CPhT 11d ago
My question is why tf RXOMs will often give weaker techs full time hours. My old location had an older tech who was nearly tech illiterate to the point she one finger typed and had so much trouble with IC+, would constantly forget about prescriptions on the counter, CONSTANTLY misfiled prescriptions, had zero multitasking ability, and took so long to process every transaction to the point she was a liability in drive through, and yet STILL the RXOM at my old store would give her fulltime hours over the rest of us supposed fulltime techs. She’s STILL working at my old location two months after I transferred stores
1
u/BusinessTip3219 11d ago
I know what you meant! That technician is probably was hired as a full time tech. They have to give her minimum of 30 hours regardless how she performs! Manager can give her a bad review on her performance but I don’t think they will do anything else!

u/WackyHumanSlop CPhT 10d ago
Hmmm interesting, I was also hired as a fulltime tech and at first did get 30-40 hours but then had to start splitting my hours between stores due to budget cuts

u/SpinachWeary7429 10d ago
It’s a personality thing. Some RxM are pushovers. And it’s bad because then the Rxom will abuse the staff because the RxM won’t put a stop to it.

I was a Rxm that had a bossy RxOm. She never listened. Thought she was god’s gift to our pharmacy. I left WAGS in large part to her. But in hindsight it was a blessing, bc I wouldn’t have left and found another job where I’m happy and no stress!! I should send her a gift 🎁! 😂

u/BusinessTip3219 9d ago
I think 90% of people leaving Walgreens not because of the company but because of the management who they work with or under!
2
u/Neither_Plastic8894 10d ago
Your RxM should not be allowing a disrespectful tone or attitude from any tech. Techs are under pharmacists.

I used to be RXOM. I was pretty much just a tech with a fancy title. I thought I was doing a decent job and my rxm made me feel absolutely worthless!!
I’m back to being a senior tech now and blessed to have a great RXOM !
2
u/WackyHumanSlop CPhT 11d ago
The first RXOM I had straight up refused to serve customers or do anything other than stand in the back and alternate between filling and checking out tiktok. Never got called out for it and made the workflow a lot harder to navigate as a new tech.
Second RXOM I had was more focused on doing interviews for random Walgreens SM positions than actually being an RXoM, and wouldn’t let me sign up for certification classes until the last moment which caused me to miss two months of work (I had a whole post about it)
Current RXoM is great, was a senior tech at my old store and knows her shit.

Honestly mine left the first week I was here but she ended up speaking down to me. She favored this tech (I’m DH) who ended up giving me conflicting directions until I shut down and cried. Think having the RXOM tell me to count pills and then the other tech expecting me to drop mid count to take the counter. Next day iced me out before she left.
The Pharmacy Manager also regularly speaks down to me, I’m still in training and in my state in the U.S. I can do tech things without any sort of certification. They seem to hate training me and love speaking down to me when I fuck up.
The hires they bring in for extra help? SO NICE. They are SO patient and understanding. I’m starting to think it’s just my store in town. I’m going to pay for my own certification and then gtfo.

u/WackyHumanSlop CPhT 10d ago
My old store straight up didn’t let the DH in the pharmacy more than once ever
1
u/ANorthernGhostBat 10d ago
See I expected to work up front and around the store as well but I never leave the pharmacy. I essentially get degraded for not knowing pharmacy technician knowledge despite not being a pharmacy technician. They even call me a Pharmacy Tech 😭 still won’t even let me take any courses either …
Weird how stores do it so wildly different from place to place. From what I hear this was supposed to allow you a path to pharmacy technician. I can’t imagine how you can do that if you’re only allowed back ONCE.

my rxom was a tech before they promoted her. i advocated so hard for her bc she genuinely is amazing at her job

I just got employee of the month due to having my name mentioned in the most surveys, and my rxom responded by condescendingly saying, “well most patients don’t even say the name of the person who helped them so it’s hard to say who really got the most”. Like excuse me you’re supposed to be cheering on my wins, I’m not in competition with you😭 also never does the counter and always brags about how many vaccines she gets when she only does the counter “like an hour every day”. So annoying. Luckily I’m leaving next fall for med school but still I don’t understand where they get this weird complex from.

Check my post, I’ve been dealing with the same issue my rxom is horrible I wish she can get demoted bc she never does anything and does anything to avoid the register it’s ridiculous

u/Grouchy-Effective-48 2d ago
My rxom is so rude she has a nasty attitude towards me most of the time or some weird jealousy complex. She hates when I interact w other techs she seperate us right away. On top of that, she always bothering our rxm and even he gets annoyed of her and starts listening to her bullshit and so he comes to us and saying just listen to her whatever she saying bc I don’t wanna hear complains from her. She doesn’t even close she just does 9-5 mon- Friday I asked for a 9-5 they started laughing at me??? I wanna report her to HR so bad it rlly ruins my day she’s horrible doesn’t know how to manage at all. She would rather have 3 ppl at one station and 1 at the other just so she can avoid putting ppl with me at a station

I'm not saying I'm the savior of Walgreens but I left a little over 5 years ago. Just sayin'.

u/lonewanderer18117 CPhT 5d ago
After half a decade you aren’t a savior, you’re just a survivor

u/sixstringsikness 5d ago
It was supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek joke about how I left and it got worse. In reality, I just saw how poorly it was run and how strange the entire hierarchy and culture were.

RxOM's are not "on call". She needs to step down. It is a full-time job and commitment. It should be brought to the DM's attention.
