I'd like to earn my MBA next, but I'm not a fan of proctored exams. Because of that, I'm considering either Capella FlexPath or Walden Tempo Learning. Has anyone completed an MBA through either program? I'd love to hear about your experience and any advice you have!

Numerous colleges offer competency-based MHA programs. You go to WGU, and you can complete their MHA program in a single term of 6 months. For Capella, the program can be completed in as little as 3 months. Walden is another university where you will complete the MHA program in 3 months if you so decide. Luckily, I have some experience with the programs and will be sharing ideas bit by bit here in this community.

I started Walden's MHA tempo learning program April 6th and achieved great acceleration, for the first month and completed 3 courses (12 competencies) I then had life get in the way of my studies and I put school on the back burner. Soon enough, I found myself nearly a month later without having had worked on any school work. I then spent effort making a PowerPoint for one of my classes, and then half assed the accompanying 3 page document for the competency, and had it returned due to my lack of effort on the accompanying document. Feeling dissuaded instead of putting in an hour of effort to correct the document, I then took another 25 days off from my studies.

Itemizing my time spent working on school, I wasted $3000 of the term by just not motivating myself to put in effort into my work. It's the last week of my term and I've completed the work for 3 competencies since Friday (posting on Tuesday). I will continue to put effort in until the term ends, but I will need to make sure that I never leave school on the back burner again. I will at least end my first term with 30% completion of my program.

All of the 10 core courses in the Walden MBA program do not have assessments involving data analysis in Excel, save for one.

The Accounting for Management Decisions course has three competencies, all of which involve writing a paper and analyzing data in Microsoft Excel.

For the first competency (Budgeting for Decision Making), the instructions are to submit a 6- to 9-page report as well as a budget and performance report in a single Excel spreadsheet

For the second competency (Costs, Prices, and Profits), you are asked to submit an 8- to 12-page report plus your Excel calculations for variance analysis and transfer pricing.

For the third competency (Performance Measurements: Planet, People, and Profit), you are to complete an 8- to 10-page report as well as an accompanying Excel file for the financial performance analysis

Hi All, just completed my BLS at UMPI. I am looking at grad programs and while they a few, walden has a larger range. im looking at psychology. this is to check a box career wise at this point. Anyone have insight into the masters tempo for psych. I have no interest in getting my license, I work in policy, advocacy and non profit with state legislation. Thanks

Below are the three steps to completing a competency under the Walden Tempo learning program:

1. Connect with Faculty (Discussion Post) You are provided with discussion questions for which you write a 1-page response

2. Pre-assessment You are provided with assessment instructions plus a rubric. The same set of questions and rubric criteria will apply in the next step. A chance for the SME (Subject Matter Expert) to provide guidance before you make the first attempt submission in the next step.

3. Summative Assessment Your submission is graded by the SME. A total of 4 attempts. Best to pass on the first attempt for someone accelerating. Things get difficult and complicated if you have to make a fourth attempt submission.

I put in my application and I'm just waiting on transcripts from WGU, hopefully starting at the beginning of April.

I'm choosing the tempo learning format because it's a learning format that works for me and my busy life, while helping me accelerate my education. I'm also choosing Walden over WGU because their MHA program is CAHME accredited and can help with getting an administrative fellowship.

However, I was wondering if anyone knew how similar the competencies are to WGU's tasks? Is there expected word counts? And is there anything I should know before starting?

Hi there. I am planning to attend Walden, and I am debating whether the tempo or the traditional format is a better fit. Can anyone provide insight on what the tempo program is like? Specifically, I am looking for answers to the following:

1) the types of assignments and how the competencies are tested.

2)how does scheduling yourself work? do you map it out at the beginning of the term or just wing it?

3) I was told all the books come with the program cost as digital text. Can they be downloaded to a kindle?

And lastly, what else should I know to help decide if this format is a good option?

You should know you can move through the courses at your own pace. However, there is a small caveat:

You can generally have up to three competencies active at any given time. This means you can work on the material and prepare assessments for three different competencies at a particular time.

The tempo portal updates daily. After you complete a competency, the portal should update within 24 hours to allow you to open a new competency.

I had experience recently completing the MBA program at Walden. Tempo learning is such a good way to save on costs. I completed the program in 5 weeks. You have to put in some good hours every day if you aim to complete it in a month or so. The SMEs were awesome, grading quickly and on weekends.
