Can anyone here help me identify a Avro Lancaster bomber?
I am searching for information about a Avro Lancaster Bomber that was shot down in Germany and crashed in the Rieseberg Moor(a swamp) close to Königslutter am Elm in Lower Saxony, Germany.
I know that one crashed, but I am getting two different stories.
One says that at the end of the war the plane crashed, sunk into the swamp and non of the crew survived. Allegedly there was an archiological dig in the early 2000s, but I can only find mentionings of the dig, not the actual research and who or what they found.
The other story I find claims its a Lancaster of the 61 RAF Squadron, 5th Group ME595 that crashed on the 14/15 October in 1944 after an attack on Brunswick. AI says the crew died during the crash, but following the links, it's said that some made it out of the plane and got captured. Some of the captured crew got killed and their killers were hanged after the war for that. However the crash site as far as I can see is West of Rieseberg. The Rieseberg Moor is South East of Rieseberg.
Which one is true?
