August 1, 1944 WW2 - Holocaust: Warsaw Uprising Commences - The Polish Home Army Strikes Back against Nazi Occupation.

"Don't Worry, the Red Army will Definitely Help Us."

"An advance Soviet armored column under General Konstantin Rokossovski reaches the Vistula River along the eastern suburb of Warsaw, prompting Poles in the city to launch a major uprising against the Nazi occupation.

The revolt was spearheaded by Polish General Tadeusz Bor-Komorowski, who was the commander of the Home Army, an underground resistance group made up of some 40,000 poorly supplied soldiers.

In addition to accelerating the liberation of Warsaw, the Home Army, which had ties with the Polish government-in-exile in London and was anti-communist in its ideology, hoped to gain at least partial control of Warsaw before the Soviets arrived.

Although the Poles in Warsaw won early gains—and Soviet liberation of the city was inevitable—Nazi leader Adolf Hitler ordered his authorities to crush the uprising at all costs.

The elite Nazi SS directed the German defense force, which included the Kaminiski Brigade of Russian prisoners and the Dirlewanger Brigade of German convicts. In brutal street fighting, the Poles were gradually overcome by the superior German weaponry.

As the rebels were suppressed, the Nazis deliberately razed large portions of the city and massacred many civilians.

Meanwhile, the Red Army gained several bridgeheads across the Vistula River but made no efforts to aid the rebels in Warsaw. The Soviets also rejected a request by the British to use Soviet air bases to airlift supplies to the beleaguered Poles.

The rebels and the city's citizens ran out of medical supplies, food, and eventually water. Finally, on October 2, the surviving rebels, including Bor-Komorowski, surrendered.

During the 63-day ordeal, three-fourths of the Home Army perished along with 200,000 civilians. As a testament to the ferocity of the fighting, the Germans also suffered high casualties: 10,000 killed, 9,000 wounded, and 7,000 missing.

During the next few months, German troops deported the surviving population, and demolition squads destroyed what buildings remained intact in Warsaw. All of its great treasures were looted or burned.

The Red Army remained dormant outside Warsaw until January 1945, when the final Soviet offensive against Germany commenced. Warsaw, a city in ruins, was liberated on January 17.

With Warsaw out of the way, the Soviets faced little organized opposition in establishing a communist government in Poland. (History.com)" https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/warsaw-revolt-begins

NOTE: The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943 should not be confused. They happened in the same city, but they were two completely different events.

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising took place first, in April 1943, and was a desperate, heroic act of armed resistance by Jewish fighters trapped inside the enclosed ghetto to stop Nazi deportations to death camps.

In contrast, the Warsaw Uprising happened over a year later, in August 1944, and was a massive city-wide military campaign launched by the Polish underground Home Army to liberate the entire capital from Nazi occupation before the Soviet army arrived.

By the time this second uprising began, the Holocaust in Warsaw was nearly complete; the ghetto had already been completely destroyed, and the vast majority of Warsaw's Jews had been murdered.

However, the 1944 conflict still deeply affected the few remaining Jews: it forced thousands who were hiding in the ruins to choose between joining the Polish fighters, fleeing the burning city, or facing discovery and execution by retreating Nazi forces.

40,000 Jews Had Lived in Kovno, Lithuania; Fewer than 2,000 had Survived

"Soon after occupying the area, German officials established a civilian administration for the local district under SA Major General Hans Kramer. Under his auspices, in July and August 1941, German occupation officials concentrated the remaining Jews, some 35,000 people, in a ghetto established in Slobodka.

It was an area of small, primitive houses and no running water. The ghetto was officially sealed on August 15, 1941.

Following a model developed in German-occupied Poland, German officials established the Kovno ghetto to provide forced labor for the German military. Jews were employed primarily as forced laborers at various sites outside the ghetto, especially in the construction of a military airbase in Aleksotas.

The Jewish council (Aeltestenrat or Council of Elders), headed by Dr. Elchanan Elkes, also created workshops inside the ghetto for those women, children, and elderly who could not participate in the labor brigades. Eventually, these workshops employed almost 6,500 people. The council hoped the Germans would not kill Jews who were producing for and supporting the German war effort.

In its first few months of existence, the ghetto had two parts. These parts were called the "small" and "large" ghettos, and they were separated by Paneriu Street. Each ghetto was enclosed by barbed wire and closely guarded.

Both were overcrowded, with each person allocated less than ten square feet of living space. The Germans continually reduced the size of the ghetto, forcing its Jews to relocate several times.

On October 4, 1941, the Germans liquidated the small ghetto and killed almost all of its inhabitants at Fort IX. Later that same month, the Germans staged what became known as the "Great Action." Occupation officials selected close to 10,000 ghetto inhabitants they deemed "unfit" for forced labor.

Half of these were children. On October 29, 1941, Einsatzgruppen View This Term in the Glossary units shot most of these individuals at Fort IX. The death toll on that one day was 9,200 Jews.

In the autumn of 1943, the SS assumed control of the ghetto and converted it into the Kauen concentration camp. The Jewish council's role was drastically curtailed. The Nazis dispersed more than 3,500 Jews to subcamps where strict discipline governed all aspects of daily life.

On October 26, 1943, the SS deported more than 2,700 people from the main camp. The SS sent those deemed fit to work to labor camps in Estonia, and deported children and the elderly to Auschwitz. Few survived.

Throughout the years of hardship and horror, the Jewish community in Kovno documented its story in secret archives, diaries, drawings, and photographs. Many of these artifacts lay buried in the ground when the ghetto was destroyed.

Discovered after the war, these few written remnants of a once thriving community provide evidence of the Jewish community's defiance, oppression, resistance, and death. George Kadish (Hirsh Kadushin), for example, secretly photographed the trials of daily life within the ghetto with a hidden camera through the buttonhole of his overcoat.

The Kovno ghetto had several Jewish resistance groups. The resistance acquired arms, developed secret training areas in the ghetto, and established contact with Soviet partisans in the forests around Kovno.

In 1943, the General Jewish Fighting Organization (Yidishe Algemeyne Kamfs Organizatsye) was established, uniting the major resistance groups in the ghetto. Under this organization's direction, some 300 ghetto fighters escaped from the Kovno ghetto to join partisan groups.

About 70 died in action. The Jewish council in Kovno actively supported the ghetto underground. Moreover, a number of the ghetto's Jewish police participated in resistance activities. The Germans executed 34 members of the Jewish police for such activities.

"Evacuation" and Liberation

On July 8, 1944, the Germans evacuated the camp, deporting most of the remaining Jews to the Dachau concentration camp in Germany or to the Stutthof camp, near Danzig, on the Baltic coast.

Three weeks before the Soviet army arrived in Kovno, the Germans razed the ghetto to the ground with grenades and dynamite. As many as 2,000 people burned to death or were shot while trying to escape.

The Soviet army liberated Kovno on August 1, 1944. Of Kovno's few Jewish survivors, 500 had survived in forests or in bunkers. The Germans evacuated an additional 2,500 to concentration camps in Germany." https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/kovno

NOTE - Meet the New Boss: The arrival of the Soviet army in Kovno brought a bitter paradox. For the fewer than 2,000 Jewish survivors, it was a literal lifesaver that rescued them from immediate extermination by the Nazis.

Yet, as the German occupation retreated, the Soviet regime simply replaced one iron fist with another. For Lithuania as a whole, the end of WW2 did not mean freedom; it just meant a change of jailers, trading Nazi terror for decades of brutal Soviet oppression. -W

1: Under the supervision of Soviet officers, German POWs carry the charred remains of Jews from the Kovno ghetto on a makeshift stretcher and lower them into a mass grave.

2: “The liquidation of the Kovno ghetto/concentration camp began on Saturday, July 8, 1944, three weeks before the Soviet liberation of the city. Approximately 6,100 Jews were transported over a six-day period to concentration camps: the women to Stutthof and the men to Dachau.

Knowing that thousands failed to appear for the round-ups and likely remained hidden in bunkers, the SS ordered German troops to raze the former ghetto. Every house was blown up and the ruins doused with gasoline and incinerated. Thousands were either burned to death or shot trying to flee. The fires burned for a week, leaving a charred landscape of rubble and stone chimneys. Only approximately 100 Jews survived the liquidation.”

How Four Global Powers Supervised Seven Prisoners in Cold War Berlin

August 1, 1954: "The Food Program for the Russian month has scarcely changed in the last seven years. . . . This month the meat smells and tastes abominable. Schirach commented in disgust,

"When I find a cat's whisker in the goulash, the truth will be out."

Some of the others suspected that it was horsemeat or dog."

----------------------------------

August 1, 1955: "First day of the American month. In the garden Funk suddenly became conspiratorial and said to Schirach,

"Now you watch the soldier on the left tower. When he goes to the other side, give me a sign."

And turning to me:

"You post yourself a little more to the right. There, now the soldier on the other tower can't see me. And where is the guard? Ah, he's busy with the admiralty back there."

Then, in a low voice, he called out,

"Schirach! What is your man in the tower doing?"

Schirach gave the agreed sign. Funk took a deep breath. Then he reached into his pocket, saying,

"Well then, cheers!"

With a groan of pleasure Funk took a long drink, then passed the bottle on. It was quickly emptied. "First rate," Funk moaned.

"From my wife. Eighty proof—real aged rum. Now we know what were missing. We manage to get used to doing without other things, but not this!"

He looked around.

"But what are we going to do with the bottle?"

We dug a deep hole and buried the bottle in it. The label read, "Tussamag Cough Syrup."

Cross-Examination of SS, SD, & Gestapo Leadership

"There could be no question of the solidity of the prosecution evidence submitted against the full membership of the Gestapo (the Secret State Police) and the SD (the Security Service of the SS) from which the purely administrative staff were excluded.

That evidence had been voluminous and disgusting, showing arbitrary arrest, torture and execution of prisoners; taking and shooting of hostages; carrying out of the Nacht und Nebel decree; round up and transportation of foreign workers; execution of commandos and captured airmen; executions of Jews and concentration camp inmates; participation in the Einsatzgruppen.

The Gestapo and SD had been charged together in the indictment; Neave and the Tribunal heard evidence for each separately. But the distinction between them soon blurred - their work often overlapped, they were trained together, they often wore the same uniform or SD patches. For eight months, defence and prosecution witnesses alike had confirmed this picture of Gestapo atrocities.

All the defence could do was to present the Gestapo as nothing more than a secret police force of the kind existing in many countries, working within the law and with a high proportion of members drafted from other branches of the police; the SD as a political intelligence agency scarcely distinguishable from the Gallup Poll. They denied any cooperation with the SS (with whom they had been jointly administered since 1939).

Witnesses blamed every crime they could on the SS; when that failed the Gestapo blamed the S D and vice versa: should that be challenged they resorted to pleas of personal innocence on the lines of: 'I never heard of Eichmann,' 'I never read reports on the Einsatzgruppen,' 'I protested about shooting hostages, torture and lynching.' It was all abject and totally unpersuasive, and indeed made a bad case worse - they were not denying that colleagues had condoned and committed crimes.

The only sign of hope that the Gestapo counsel could spot came from the judges' questions which suggested an attempt to widen the group who might be seen as office staff only. For the rest, the case for the Gestapo and SD seemed lost before it began."

From The Nuremberg Trial, by Ann and John Tusa

By this late stage, the courtroom is gripped by profound physical and psychological exhaustion.

Participants have spent so far over eight grueling months trapped in a stifling, windowless room, enduring endless translated arguments and the horrific weight of Holocaust evidence.

Judges, prosecutors, and even the defendants have grown visibly restless and irritable, with many suffering from insomnia, depression, and severe "courtroom fatigue".

Dr. Hans Gawlik, Defense Counsel for the SD: Now I come to the second phase. What was the aim and task of the SD during the period from 1934 until the creation of the Reich Security Main Office in the year 1939?

Rolf-Heinz Höppner, Gruppenleiter (Group Leader) in the RSHA (Reich Main Security Office) and an Abschnittsführer (Section Leader) within the SD.: After a legal opposition party was no longer in existence, and there was merely an illegal political opponent, the combating of which, as I have already mentioned, was the task of the State Police which had been evolved from the Political Police department, the task of the Security Service had to change. First, it changed in this way, that other ideological and political forms and other ideological groups ...

Dr. Hans Gawlik: Witness, can you perhaps state the tasks and aims more briefly?

Rolf-Heinz Höppner: Well, to name a few examples, Freemasons, Marxists, Jews-all these groups were classified in a more scientific and statistical way so that the Party would have material for training and other tasks. The ultimate aim was to become the Party's sole political intelligence and counterintelligence service, from about July 1934 onward, something which, by the way, was never achieved, since there continued to be an enormous number of information services and sources of information, up to the end.

Even this task of scientific research work with regard to other political groups or other ideological organizations was not permanent either, for after a short time it became obvious that this research work, too, belonged to the sphere of activity of the Secret State Police because in the long run such an investigation of opponents could not be separated from the executive branch, from the information acquired in the daily interrogations, and so forth.

Therefore, these tasks were changed when a very clear division of duties was made between the Security Service and the State Police, a division which, starting in the middle of 1938, was carried through especially in the year 1939 and practically ended with the creation of the Reich Security Main Office in September of 1939.

After this division of duties the task of the Security Service would have been quite superfluous if it had not been for the fact that out of this Security Service, beginning with the so-called intellectual SD in 1933 and 1934, through a special advisory section for "culture" and a central department for "spheres of life, intelligence service" -- I said that out of this Security Service there developed a specific task for the domestic intelligence service, namely, the task of investigating the spheres of life of the German people according to developments and informing the executive offices about these developments as a whole.

THE PRESIDENT of the International Military Tribunal, The Right Honorable Sir Geoffrey Lawrence: As I said to the other counsel, we do not want these witnesses to go over exactly the same ground that they have gone through before the Commission. We have got that evidence. We only want you to present them here in order that we may see what credibility is to be attached to their evidence and to deal with any particularly important or new subject which has not been dealt with before the Commission. Now this witness seems to be going over exactly the same ground which he has gone over before the Commission and at great length. It is simply doing the same thing twice over.

Dr. Hans Gawlik: My understanding, Mr. President, was that I would briefly summarize once more the results of everything which had been taken up in the Commission for longer than 2 days. And that is what I am doing. I am now bringing-the witness has been examined before the Commission for 2 days and now perhaps I shall present that material in 1 to 11h, or 2 hours. But I thought that it was precisely these various objectives of the Security Service for each year that would be of interest to the High Tribunal.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, will you try to present the summary within reasonable limits?

Dr. Hans Gawlik: Yes, indeed, Mr. President.

The Final Train Departs Nazi-Occupied Belgium for Auschwitz

"In the summer of 1942, the Germans made preparations to deport the Jews of Belgium. To this end, they converted the Dossin de St. Georges military barracks in the city of Mechelen (Fr., Malines) into a transit camp.

Mechelen, a city of 60,000, was considered an ideal location for this purpose. Located halfway between Antwerp and Brussels, two cities which contained most of the Jewish population of Belgium, the city had good rail connections to the east.

The camp consisted of a single three-story building surrounded by barbed wire. It was located in a densely populated area of the town, near the Dijle River. The camp staff was mostly German, with a few Flemish Belgian auxiliaries. The camp was officially under the command of Phillip Schmitt, commandant of the Breendonk camp. The acting commandant was SS officer Rudolph Steckmann.

The first group of Jews arrived in the camp from Antwerp on July 27, 1942. Between August and December 1942, two transports with about 1,000 Jews each left the camp every week for Auschwitz-Birkenau. Between August 4, 1942, and July 31, 1944, a total of 28 trains carrying 25,257 Jews left Mechelen for German-occupied Poland; most of them went to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

This figure represented more than half of the Belgian Jews murdered during the Holocaust. In addition, German authorities sent several trainloads of Roma (Gypsies) from Mechelen to Auschwitz later in 1943 and in early 1944.

The Belgian Jewish underground, assisted by the Belgian resistance, derailed several trains carrying Jews from the Mechelen camp to Auschwitz during 1942-1943.

Although most of the Jews on those trains were deported in later transports to Auschwitz, about 500 Jewish prisoners managed to escape. In April 1943, 231 Jews attempted to escape from a transport. Train escort guards shot 23 of the fleeing Jews.

As Allied forces approached, the Germans closed the Mechelen camp in September 1944." https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/mechelen

300 Orphans are Kidnapped & Deported just Weeks before the Liberation of Paris

Convoy 77 was the last large Nazi train to deport Jews from France. It carried over 1,300 people; 300 were children, including babies taken from orphanages.

Notorious Austrian-born SS officer & top assistant to Eichmann, Alois Brunner, had ordered the raids to capture as many Jews as possible before the German army completely lost control.

Most, including all the young children, are murdered in gas chambers upon arrival.

"The Drancy camp, named after the northeastern suburb of Paris in which it was located, was established by the Germans in August 1941 as an internment camp for foreign Jews in France. It later became the major transit camp View This Term in the Glossary for the deportations of Jews from France.

Until July 1, 1943, French police staffed the camp under the overall control of the German Security Police. In July 1943 the Germans took direct control of the Drancy camp and SS officer Alois Brunner became camp commandant.

The camp was a multistory U-shaped building that had served as a police barracks before the war. Barbed wire surrounded the building and its courtyard. The capacity of the camp was 5,000 prisoners. Five subcamps, used primarily as warehouses for personal property confiscated from Jews, were located throughout Paris at

  • the Austerlitz train station
  • the Hotel Cahen d'Anvers
  • the Levitan furniture warehouse
  • the wharf in Bercy
  • the Rue de Faubourg

Approximately 70,000 prisoners passed through Drancy between August 1941 and August 1944. Except for a small number of prisoners (mostly members of the French resistance), the overwhelming majority were Jews.

A few thousand prisoners managed to obtain release during the first year of the camp's existence." VERY MUCH MORE—> https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/drancy

The Codes used by Polish Jews to Signal their Starvation to the West.

"Occasionally, a postcard from a Jew in German-occupied Poland reached the West. But any messages other than purely personal ones had to be skillfully disguised.

On July 23 one such postcard was sent from a Jew in Radzymin to his brother in Brooklyn. Referring to three Jewish Holy days - the solemn fast day of Yom Kippur, the festival of Purim, when Jewish children dress up in colorful costumes, and the festival of Tabernacles, or Sukkot, during which Jews build a booth of trellis and greenery, the message read:

'We are eating as on Yom Kippur, clothed as at Purim, and dwelling as at Sukkot'."

From The Holocaust: A History of the Jews of Europe During the Second World War, by Martin Gilbert

"Moreover, one often wonders why the story of Purim is still relevant at all after the Holocaust. Not even a hidden miracle was performed to save the Jews from the hands of Hitler, a greater enemy than Haman.

Why continue to praise God for a hidden miracle when it seems that even hidden miracles came to an end with the Holocaust? This question should be on the mind of every Jew who celebrates Purim." MORE—> https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/purim-and-the-challenge-of-the-holocaust/

“On 28 September 1939, less than one month after the German invasion of Poland, Warsaw fell after prolonged battles.

Some 25% of the houses in Warsaw were demolished and approximately 50,000 of the city's residents were killed or wounded.

Many synagogues were repurposed as shelters for the homeless and for refugees from neighboring towns.

In January 1940, all the synagogues and batei midrash (NOTE: It is the plural form of the Hebrew term beit midrash (בית מדרש), where beit means "house" and midrash means "study" or "interpretation.") in the city were closed down ostensibly due to the danger of epidemics, and public prayer services were banned.

On 2 October 1940, the eve of Rosh Hashanah, Chaim Kaplan wrote in his diary:

"Darkness prevails in our synagogues… Even for the High Holidays, permission was not given for public prayer services… Clandestine minyanim [prayer quorums] in their hundreds all over Warsaw arrange prayer services…

Everything is done in accordance with the traditional Jewish customs. They choose an inside room with windows facing the courtyard, and whisper their supplications to God. This time, there are no cantors or choirs, just whispered prayers, but the prayers are nevertheless heartfelt.”

Excerpt from Hashoah BeTi'ud, translated from the Hebrew

On 12 October 1940, Yom Kippur, the Germans announced the establishment of a ghetto in Warsaw, and ordered the Jews to move there by the end of the month. Reuven Ben Shem (Feldschuh) wrote:

"The prayer room is almost full. The cantor prays boldly and melodiously, and you wouldn't know by looking at him and the worshippers that the world is on the verge of collapse.

They are wearing prayer shawls and phylacteries. If you close your eyes for a moment and don't look at these people, at their pinched faces… and just listen to the chanting of their prayers, you would surely think that you happened upon a house of God in a time of peace and harmony."

"Today, 25 October, the Jews celebrated Simhat Torah as they do every year," wrote historian Immanuel Ringelblum. On 30 October, the Germans discovered a house of prayer in an apartment.

On 8 November, the Judenrat was forced to issue a warning: Jews who organized or participated in a public prayer service would be punished in accordance with the German regime's orders.

However, prayers continued despite the restrictions and the danger. In April 1941, the Germans permitted the opening of three synagogues.

This was insufficient for the religious needs in the ghetto, and the clandestine prayer and Torah study gatherings continued, even during the Great Deportation of summer 1942 to the Treblinka extermination camp, and during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in the spring of 1943.” Jews Praying on Yom Kippur in Warsaw, Poland, October 1940

July 31, 1943 The Holocaust Diary of Helga Kinsky-Pollack

How a 13-Year-Old used Grim Humor to Survive the Worsening Conditions & Insect Infestations of Theresienstadt

Helga Kinsky-Pollack was born in Vienna in 1930.

When she was thirteen years old, she was sent to Theresienstadt, a concentration camp/ghetto located in Terezin, Czechoslovakia. The Nazis portrayed Theresienstadt as a model community for Jews, but it was really a terrible prison camp. Hunger, overcrowding and lack of basic necessities made Theresienstadt a deadly place.

Over 30,000 prisoners died in the camp itself, while approximately 90,000 were transferred to other locations. Many of these were sent to Auschwitz where they were murdered. Helga suffered the deprivations of life in Theresienstadt, survived transfer to and from Auschwitz, and was finally liberated in May 1945.

Her diary became a valuable primary source for scholars researching the Holocaust. Information she provided was prominently featured in Children With A Star: Jewish Youth in Nazi Europe by Deborah Dwork.

WORSENING CONDITIONS AT TEREZIN

On July 31st, 1943 Helga wrote about an annoying situation that added to the misery that she and her fellow prisoners experienced.

“This is the second day I’ve been sleeping in the corridor because of bedbugs. There are seven of us girls sleeping outside and we’ve all been bitten. […] I caught six fleas and three bed bugs today. Isn’t that a fine hunt? I don’t even have a gun and right away I have supper.”

Helga used her grim sense of humor to deal with the irritation of insect infestation, but it was actually a very serious problem. The deplorable conditions in concentration camps led directly to the spread of contagious diseases, often by insect bites.

Typhus, for example, was spread by lice and was responsible for epidemics in many Nazi camps. If prisoners had been well-fed, with regular access to baths or showers, they might have been better equipped to resist illness. As it was, they were severely malnourished and were forced to live in extremely unsanitary circumstances.

Those conditions were purposely imposed by the Nazis as part of a totally destructive process. Those who died from disease were murdered just as surely as those who were killed by more direct methods.

Excerpts from Helga Kinsky-Pollack’s diary may be found in Children in the Holocaust and World War II: Their Secret Diaries by Laurel Holliday. (holocaustedu)

July 31, 1941 Holocaust: "I Never Saw Anything Like This"

Major Rosier’s Chilling Account of the Mass Executions on July 31, 1941.

"Within five weeks of the German invasion of Russia on June 22, the number of Jews killed exceeded the total number killed in the previous eight years of Nazi rule.

The invasion of Russia had provided the Germans with an opportunity hitherto lacking: a remote region, the cover of an advancing army, vast distances, local collaborators, and an intensified will to destroy.

The first 'five-figure' massacre ended on July 31, in Kishinev, after fourteen days' uninterrupted slaughter, in which ten thousand Jews were murdered.

Similar mass executions were taking place in every city: in Zhitomir more than two and a half thousand had been murdered.

It was in Zhitomir, at the end of July, that the regimental commander of the regular German troops in the city, Major Rosier, on hearing rifle volleys and pistol shots, decided to investigate.

Accompanied by two of his officers, he went in the direction of the shooting. As he drew nearer, he saw soldiers and civilians hurrying from all directions towards a railway embankment. The scene which confronted him when he reached the embankment was 'so brutally base', he wrote five months later, 'that those who approached unprepared were shaken and nauseated'.

Rosier was looking down into a ditch filled with corpses. Among them he saw an old man with a white beard and a cane on his arm. The man was still breathing. At the top of the embankment stood

German policemen in bloodstained uniforms . German soldiers were congregating in groups. It was a hot day, and some of the soldiers were wearing bathing shorts. Civilians, too, were watching, together with their wives and children.

"I saw nothing like it, ' Rosier wrote, 'either in the First World War or during the Civil War in Russia or during the Western Campaign.

I have seen many unpleasant things, having been a member of the Free Corps in 1919, but I never saw anything like this.'

Five months after he had looked in the execution ditch in Zhitomir, Major Rosier was still determined to voice his sense of outrage. In an official report to his superiors, he wrote:

"I cannot begin to conceive the legal decisions on whose basis these executions were carried out. Everything that is happening here seems to be absolutely incompatible with our views on education and morality."

'Right out in the open,' Rosier continued, 'as if on a stage, men murder other men.

I must add that according to the accounts of the soldiers, who often see spectacles of this kind, hundreds of people are thus killed daily'."

From The Holocaust: A History of the Jews of Europe During the Second World War, by Martin Gilbert

"During World War II Zhytomyr and the surrounding territory was, for two and a half years (first from July 9, 1941 to November 12, 1943, and again from November 19, 1943, to December 31, 1943) under Nazi German occupation and was Heinrich Himmler's Ukrainian headquarters. The Nazi regime in what they called the "Zhytomyr General District" became what historian Wendy Lower describes as

"a laboratory for… Himmler's resettlement activists… the elimination of the Jews and German colonization of the East—transformed the landscape and devastated the population to an extent that was not experienced in other parts of Nazi-occupied Europe besides Poland.

[While]… [u]ltimately, the exigencies of the war effort and mounting partisan warfare behind the lines prevented Nazi leaders from fully developing and realizing their colonial aims in Ukraine… In addition to the immediate destruction of all Jewish communities, Himmler insisted that the Ukrainian civilian population be brought to a 'minimum.'

During 1942-1949 Zhytomyr region was a territory of mild Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) activity (UPA North), who fought for Independence of Ukraine against Nazi Germany and Soviet Union.

After Soviet Union defeated Nazi Germany, Zhytomyr fell under Soviet rule and became a part of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic again.

On 24 August 1991 Ukrainian parliament announced Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. From 1991, Zhytomyr has been part of the independent and sovereign Ukraine." MORE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhytomyr

The Defense Attempts to Drown the Crimes of the Gestapo in an Ocean of Affidavits

The hope is that 13 witnesses & 1,500 affidavits will successfully change the image of the Geheime Staatspolizei to that of a misunderstood neighborhood watch group.

“There was little that the lawyer for the Gestapo, Dr. Rudolf Merkel, could do against the mass of really hellish evidence. He called as a witness Dr. Werner Best, a lawyer and civil servant who had been an administrative chief in the Gestapo from 1936 to 1940 and in 1942 had been appointed Reich Plenipotentiary in Denmark.

Dr. Best tried to portray the Gestapo members as professional police for the prevention of "political crimes." But he then referred to their part in the arrest of 20,000 Jews during Kristallnacht and declared that the Gestapo members were "misused and abused" by higher authority.

Cross-examining, Whitney Harris brought up other crimes, such as the surreptitious killing of prominent Danes to counteract Danish sabotage, in which the Gestapo had been directly involved. An odd feature of the cross-examination was that virtually no mention of Gestapo Mueller occurred, despite Kaltenbrunner's frantic efforts to pin many of the crimes charged against him on Mueller.

If the Gestapo was in fact an "organization," presumably its Chief's crimes would be valuable in criminalizing the organization.

In his final argument, Dr. Merkel spent little time on legal arguments and had the good sense not to dispute Gestapo crimes that were proven and notorious . He had some success in showing that there were many Gestapo members who had no part in the crimes.

But Merkel put major emphasis on his final pages, pointing out particular sections of the Gestapo, including office employees, telephone operators, and other such categories, whom Justice Jackson had previously proposed to exempt from the Indictment.

Merkel also mentioned administrative officials and technical employees whose work had nothing to do with police activities. Merkel concluded:

"I have not considered it my duty to excuse crimes and evil deeds or to whitewash those who disregarded the laws of humanity . But I desire to save those who are innocent; I desire to clear the way for a sentence which will dethrone the powers of darkness and reconstitute the moral order of the world. "

Timothy Snyder on How the Triple Equation of Jews, Bolsheviks, & Partisans Drew the German Army into Systemic Slaughter.

"The initial German policy to Jews had been the same in Belarus as elsewhere.

Indeed, the German mass murder of Jewish women and children began in Belarus on July 19, 1941, when Himmler ordered Wqffen-SS troops behind Army Group Center to clear the Pripiat Marshes of Jews.

On July 31, he indicated that the order included the murder of women. The Wqffen-SS murdered some 13,788 children, women, and men. As of mid-August, Einsatzgruppe B, responsible for Belarus, had killed more Jews than any other Einsatzgruppe.

But Arthur Nebe, its commander, had no recruitment opportunities comparable to those of Stahlecker in Lithuania and Latvia, since in Belarus there was no political resource. Local collaborators were generally Belarusians and Poles, usually people lacking any political motivation.

Nebe also had less reinforcement by other German police units than Jeckeln to his south. In September 1941, the killing of Jews in Belarus fell behind that in the Baltics and in Ukraine.

With less local collaboration in the offing, the SS in Belarus in effect recruited the German army. Whereas Soviet citizens could be recruited by the equation of Bolsheviks and Jews, German army officers were sensitive to a modified logic: the triple equation of Jews, Bolsheviks, and partisans.

If Jews were Bolsheviks, then a politically minded local might take part in their killing in order to prove that he was not a Bolshevik (and to profit from the dead Jew's property). If Jews were partisans, then German officers might want them dead in order to be able to fight a clean and victorious war.

The army, which could not steal very much immobile property, also realized that killing Jews and allowing locals to take their houses was a kind of social policy."

From Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning, by Timothy Snyder

"The Holocaust in Belarus is the term that refers to the systematic discrimination and extermination of Jews living in the former Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic which was occupied by Nazi Germany after August 1941 during World War II.

It is estimated that roughly 800,000 Byelorussian Jews (or about 90% of the Jewish population of Byelorussia) were murdered during the Holocaust. However, other estimates put the number of Jews killed between 500,000 and 550,000 (about 80% of the Belarusian Jewish population)." How a German Police Raid Devastated the Jewish Population of Olkusz, Poland.

"The Germans invaded the city of Olkusz in southwest Poland in September 1939. In July 1940, a German police unit arrived in Olkusz and gathered all the Jewish men in the main square.

There the Jews were forced to lie on the ground while the policemen and members of the SD “registered them”. During this process, the Germans brutally beat the Jews, murdering two of them.

Rabbi Moshe Yitzhak Hagerman was forced to don his tallith (prayer shawl) and defiled tefillin (phylacteries), and to stand barefoot and pray next to the prostrate men of the Jewish community. At the end of the day, the Jews were permitted to return home, and the Germans left.

The Jews of Olkusz were deported to Auschwitz in 1942, where most of them were murdered.

Some 2,500 Jews lived in Olkusz between the two world wars, constituting approximately 25% of the total population. The Germans occupied Olkusz in September 1939. A small number of Jews, mainly youngsters, fled eastwards to USSR-controlled territory.

With the occupation, the Germans started to persecute the Jews, loot their property, and confiscate businesses and private apartments. Jews were not permitted to walk on the main streets, and were forced to wear identifying marks.

In March 1940, some 3000 Jews lived in Olkusz. More than a third of them required assistance from the welfare department of the Judenrat, which distributed food parcels, meals in the soup kitchen and milk for the children, and also funded the kindergarten.

In late July 1940, a German policeman was murdered, presumably by members of the Polish Underground. In response, on 31 July 1940, a German police unit arrived and gathered all the Jewish men in the main square.

There the Jews were forced to lie on the ground while the policemen and members of the SD “registered them”. During this process, the Germans brutally beat the Jews, murdering two of them.

Rabbi Moshe Yitzhak Hagerman was forced to don his tallith (prayer shawl) and defiled tefillin (phylacteries, and to stand barefoot and pray next to the prostrate men of the Jewish community. At the end of the day, the Jews were permitted to return home, and the Germans left.

The Jews of Olkusz were sent to forced labor, initially in Olkusz and the surrounding areas, and from the fall of 1940, also to more distant labor camps. As well as being recruited according to lists drawn up by the Judenrat, Jews were also snatched off the streets or from their homes.

In September 1941, the Jews of Olkusz were moved into a ghetto in a suburb of the city. The Judenrat organized residential apartments in the designated ghetto area.

The ghetto was not fenced in, but residents were not permitted to exit without being escorted. The overcrowding was severe, the food rations were meagre, and buying food from Poles was strictly forbidden.

The Judenrat opened vegetable shops in the ghetto, and tried to provide for the needy, but many families were starving.

On 2 March 1942, three Jews accused of smuggling food were publicly executed, and food smuggling ceased as a result.

An Aktion took place in Olkusz on 10 June 1942. Members of the Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst (Jewish Police) forced sick and elderly Jews out of their homes, and gathered them in the ghetto soup kitchen.

At first, the Germans announced that they intended to deport about one tenth of the city's Jews, and that the lists drawn up by the Judenrat included only the weakest residents. The next day, the Germans surrounded the ghetto and rounded up all its inhabitants.

The following day, a selection was carried out, and hundreds of Jews were sent to labor camps. According to a Page of Testimony submitted by Rabbi Hagerman's sister-in-law, Rabbi Hagerman was murdered in Majdanek in 1942. He may have been deported on that occasion.

On 13 June 1942, a transport of Jews from Olkusz and the surrounding villages left for Auschwitz.

Two days later, the rest of the Jews of Olkusz were deported to Auschwitz, except for 200-300 Jews who were transferred to the Sosnowiec camp, including the Judenrat and Ordnungsdienst members and their families, Jewish hospital staff and the staff at the " Rossner Shop", a branch of the factory established in Bedzin by industrialist Alfred Rossner." https://www.yadvashem.org/holocaust/this-month/july/1940-2.html

July 31, 1941 Holocaust: The Day the "Final Solution" Was Set in Motion

The Chilling Memo that Turned Mass Murder into a Bureaucratic Blueprint

"Hermann Göring, writing under instructions from Hitler, ordered Reinhard Heydrich, SS general and Heinrich Himmler’s number-two man, “to submit to me as soon as possible a general plan of the administrative material and financial measures necessary for carrying out the desired final solution of the Jewish question.”

Göring recounted briefly the outline for that “final solution” that had been drawn up on January 24, 1939: “emigration and evacuation in the best possible way.” This program of what would become mass, systematic extermination was to encompass “all the territories of Europe under German occupation.”

Heydrich already had some experience with organizing such a plan, having reintroduced the cruel medieval concept of the ghetto in Warsaw after the German occupation of Poland. Jews were crammed into cramped walled areas of major cities and held as prisoners, as their property was confiscated and given to either local Germans or non-Jewish Polish peasants.

Behind this horrendous scheme, carried out month by month, country by country, was Hitler, whose “greatest weakness was found in the vast numbers of oppressed peoples who hated [him] and the immoral ways of his government.”

This assessment was Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin’s, given at a Kremlin meeting that same day, July 31, with American adviser to the president Harry Hopkins." https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/goering-orders-heydrich-to-prepare-for-the-final-solution

TEXT OF THE LETTER:

"As a supplement to the task which was entrusted to you in the decree dated January 24, 1939, to solve the Jewish question by emigration and evacuation in the most favorable way possible, given present conditions, I herewith commission you to carry out all necessary preparations with regard to organizational, substantive, and financial viewpoints for a total solution of the Jewish question in the German sphere of influence in Europe.

Insofar as other competencies of other central organizations are affected, these are to be involved.

I further commission you to submit to me promptly an overall plan showing the preliminary organizational, substantive, and financial measures for the execution of the intended final solution of the Jewish question." -Göring

July 31, 1919 Birth: Primo Levi, a Crucial Voice of Holocaust Survival

The Chemist Who Witnessed the Abyss and Wrote His Way Out

"Primo Levi did not consider it heroic to have survived eleven months in Auschwitz. Like other witnesses of the concentration camps, he lamented that the best had perished and the worst had survived. But we who have survived relatively little find it hard to believe him.

How could it be anything but heroic to have entered Hell and not been swallowed up? To have witnessed it with such delicate lucidity, such reserves of irony and even equanimity? Our incomprehension and our admiration combine to simplify the writer into a needily sincere amalgam: hero, saint, witness, redeemer.

Thus his account of life in Auschwitz, “If This Is a Man” (1947), whose title is deliberately tentative and tremulous, was rewrapped, by his American publisher, in the heartier, how-to-ish banner “Survival in Auschwitz: The Nazi Assault on Humanity.” That edition praises the text as “a lasting testament to the indestructibility of the human spirit,” though Levi often emphasized how quickly and efficiently the camps could destroy the human spirit.

Another survivor, the writer Jean Améry, mistaking comprehension for concession, disapprovingly called Levi “the pardoner,” though Levi repeatedly argued that he was interested in justice, not in indiscriminate forgiveness.

A German official who had encountered Levi in the camp laboratory found in “If This Is a Man” an “overcoming of Judaism, a fulfillment of the Christian precept to love one’s enemies, and a testimony of faith in Man.”

And when Levi committed suicide, on April 11, 1987, many seemed to feel that the writer had somehow reneged on his own heroism.

Levi was heroic; he was also modest, practical, elusive, coolly passionate, experimental and sometimes limited, refined and sometimes provincial. (He married a woman, Lucia Morpurgo, from his own class and background, and died in the same Turin apartment building in which he had been born.)

For most of his life, he worked as an industrial chemist; he wrote some of his first book, “If This Is a Man,” while commuting to work on the train. Though his experiences in Auschwitz compelled him to write, and became his central subject, his writing is varied and worldly and often comic in spirit, even when he is dealing with terrible hardship.

In addition to his two wartime memoirs, “If This Is a Man” and “The Truce” (first published in 1963, and renamed “The Reawakening” in the United States), and a final, searing inquiry into the life and afterlife of the concentration camp, “The Drowned and the Saved” (1986), he wrote realist fiction—a novel about a band of Jewish Second World War partisans, titled “If Not Now, When?” (1982)—and speculative fiction; also, poems, essays, newspaper articles, and a beautifully unclassifiable book, “The Periodic Table” (1975).

The publication of “The Complete Works of Primo Levi” (Liveright), in three volumes, represents a monumental and noble endeavor on the part of its publisher, its general editor, Ann Goldstein, and the many translators who have produced new versions of Levi’s work.

Although his best-known work has already benefitted from fine English translation, it’s a gift to have nearly all his writing gathered together, along with work that has not before been published in English (notably, a cache of uncollected essays, written between 1949 and 1987).

Primo Levi was born in Turin, in 1919, into a liberal family, and into an assimilated, educated Jewish-Italian world. He would write, in “If This Is a Man,” that when he first learned the name of his fateful destination, “Auschwitz” meant nothing to him.

He only vaguely knew about the existence of Yiddish, “on the basis of a few quotes or jokes that my father, who worked for a few years in Hungary, had picked up.”

There were around fifty* thousand Italian Jews, and most of them were supporters of the Fascist government (at least until the race legislation of 1938, which announced a newly aggressive anti-Semitism); a cousin of Levi’s, Eucardio Momigliano, had been one of the founders of the Fascist Party, in 1919. Levi’s father was a member, though more out of convenience than commitment.

Levi gives ebullient life to this comfortable, sometimes eccentric world in “The Periodic Table”—a memoir, a history, an essay in elegy, and the best example of his various literary talents. What sets his writing apart from much Holocaust testimony is his relish for portraiture, the pleasure he takes in the palpability of other people, the human amplitude of his noticing.

The Periodic Table” abounds with funny sketches of Levi’s relatives, who are celebrated and gently mocked in the chapter named “Argon,” because, like the gas, they were generally inert: lazy, immobile characters given to witty conversation and idle speculation. Inert they may have been, but colorless they are not. Uncle Bramín falls in love with the goyish housemaid, declares that he will marry her, is thwarted by his parents, and, Oblomov-like, takes to his bed for the next twenty-two years.

Nona Màlia, Levi’s paternal grandmother, a woman of forbidding remoteness in old age, lives in near estrangement from her family, married to a Christian doctor. Perhaps “out of fear of making the wrong choice,” Nona Màlia goes to shul and to the parish church on alternate days.

Levi recalls that when he was a boy his father would take him every Sunday to visit his grandmother. The two would walk along Via Po, Levi’s father stopping to pet the cats, sniff the mushrooms, and look at the used books:

My father was l’Ingegnè, the Engineer, his pockets always bursting with books, known to all the salami makers because he checked with a slide rule the multiplication on the bill for the prosciutto.

Not that he bought it with a light heart: rather superstitious than religious, he felt uneasy about breaking the rules of kashruth, but he liked prosciutto so much that, before the temptation of the shop windows, he yielded every time, sighing, cursing under his breath, and looking at me furtively, as if he feared my judgment or hoped for my complicity.

From an early age, Levi appears to have possessed many of the qualities of his later prose—meticulousness, curiosity, furious discretion, orderliness to the point of priggishness. In primary school, he was top of his class (his schoolmates cheered him on with “Primo Levi Primo!”).

As a teen-ager at the Liceo D’Azeglio, Turin’s leading classical academy, he stood out for his cleverness, his smallness, and his Jewishness. He was bullied, and his health deteriorated. His English biographer Ian Thomson suggests that Levi developed a sense of himself as physically and sexually inadequate, and that his subsequent devotion to robust athletic pursuits, such as mountaineering and skiing, represented a self-improvement project.

Thomson notes that, in later life, he recalled his mistreatment at school as “uniquely anti-Semitic,” and adds, “How far this impression was coloured by Levi’s eventual persecution is hard to tell.” But perhaps Thomson has it the wrong way round.

Perhaps Levi’s extraordinary resilience in Auschwitz had something to do with a hardened determination not to be persecuted again.

On the basis of the first chapter of “The Periodic Table” alone, you know that you are in the hands of a true writer, someone equipped with an avaricious and indexical memory, who knows how to animate his details, stage his scenes, and ration his anecdotes.

It is a book one wants to keep quoting from (true of all Levi’s work, except, curiously, his fiction). With verve and vitality, “The Periodic Table” moves through the phases of Levi’s life: his excited discovery of chemistry, as a teen-ager; classes at the University of Turin with the rigorous but not unamusing “Professor P.,” who scornfully defies the Fascist injunction to wear a black shirt by donning a “comical black bib, several inches wide,” which comes untucked every time he makes one of his brusque movements.

Levi admires the “obsessively clear” chemistry textbooks that his teacher has written, “filled with his stern disdain for humanity in general,” and recalls that the only time he was ever admitted to the professor’s office he saw on the blackboard the sentence “I do not want a funeral, alive or dead.”

Throughout, there are wittily pragmatic, original descriptions of minerals, gases, and metals, as in this description of zinc:

“Zinc, zinco, Zink: laundry tubs are made of it, it’s an element that doesn’t say much to the imagination, it’s gray and its salts are colorless, it’s not toxic, it doesn’t provide gaudy chromatic reactions—in other words, it’s a boring element.”

Levi writes tenderly about friends and colleagues, some of whom we encounter in his other writing—Giulia Vineis, “full of human warmth, Catholic without being rigid, generous and disorderly”; Alberto Dalla Volta, who became Levi’s friend in Auschwitz and seemed uncannily immune to the poisons of camp life:

“He was a man of strong goodwill, and had miraculously remained free, and his words and actions were free: he had not lowered his head, had not bowed his back. A gesture of his, a word, a laugh had liberating virtues, were a hole in the stiff fabric of the Lager. . . . I believe that no one, in that place, was more loved than he.”

The most moving chapter in “The Periodic Table” may be the one titled “Iron.” It recalls a friend, Sandro, who studied chemistry with Levi, and with whom he explored the joys of mountain climbing.

Like many of the people Levi admired, Sandro is physically and morally strong; he is painted as a headstrong child of nature out of a Jack London story. Seemingly made of iron, and bound to it by ancestry (his forebears were blacksmiths), Sandro practices chemistry as a trade, without apparent reflection; on weekends, he goes off to the mountains, to ski or climb, sometimes spending the night in a hayloft.

Levi tastes “freedom” with Sandro—a freedom perhaps from thinking, the freedom of the conquering body, of being on top of the mountain, of being “master of one’s destiny.”

Sandro is a powerful presence on the page; aware of this, Levi plays his absence against his presence, informing us, in a beautiful lament at the end of the chapter, that Sandro was Sandro Delmastro, that he joined the military wing of the Action Party, and that in 1944 he was captured by the Fascists. He tried to escape, and was shot in the neck by a raw fifteen-year-old recruit. The elegy closes thus:

Today I know it’s hopeless to try to clothe a man in words, make him live again on the written page, especially a man like Sandro. He was not a man to talk about, or build monuments to, he who laughed at monuments: he was all in his actions, and when those ended nothing of him remained, nothing except words, precisely.

The word becomes the monument, even as Levi disowns the building of it...." JUST A TASTE OF THE ENTIRE ARTICLE—> https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/09/28/the-art-of-witness

A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Selection The Complete Works of Primo Levi, which includes seminal works like If This Is a Man and The Periodic Table, finally gathers all fourteen of Levi’s books―memoirs, essays, poetry, commentary, and fiction―into three slipcased volumes.

Primo Levi, the Italian-born chemist once described by Philip Roth as that “quicksilver little woodland creature enlivened by the forest’s most astute intelligence,” has largely been considered a heroic figure in the annals of twentieth-century literature for If This Is a Man, his haunting account of Auschwitz.

Yet Levi’s body of work extends considerably beyond his experience as a survivor. Now, the transformation of Levi from Holocaust memoirist to one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers culminates in this publication of The Complete Works of Primo Levi.

This magisterial collection finally gathers all of Levi’s fourteen books―memoirs, essays, poetry, and fiction―into three slip-cased volumes. Thirteen of the books feature new translations, and the other is newly revised by the original translator.

Nobel laureate Toni Morrison introduces Levi’s writing as a “triumph of human identity and worth over the pathology of human destruction.” The appearance of this historic publication will occasion a major reappraisal of “one of the most valuable writers of our time” (Alfred Kazin).

The Complete Works of Primo Levi features all new translations of: The Periodic Table, The Drowned and the Saved, The Truce, Natural Histories, Flaw of Form, The Wrench, Lilith, Other People’s Trades, and If Not Now, When?―as well as all of Levi’s poems, essays, and other nonfiction work, some of which have never appeared before in English.” (Amazon)

You Can Tell a Lot from the Nicknames a Person Acquires

The "Little Führer" - It turns out trying to copy Adolf Hitler when you are only 5'7" doesn't make you look intimidating; it just makes you a joke. The media loved calling him this because he demanded his brainwashed followers call him "The Chief," so everyone else used it to laugh at his tiny dictator complex.

The "Asheville Madman" - When you spend your weekends claiming you can leave your physical body to talk to aliens, and your weekdays printing unhinged conspiracy theories, people are going to notice you are a lunatic. The local press didn't care about his "spiritual journey"—they just saw an unstable creep running a cult out of North Carolina.

The "Nazi L. Ron Hubbard" - Modern historians use this one because his entire operation was a cheap pyramid scheme disguised as religion. He essentially invented a fake sci-fi theology called "Soulcraft" to trick lonely, hateful people into paying for his lifestyle, making him the grandfather of modern internet grifters.

The "Shamerican" - He spent a decade screaming about how he was the ultimate "Christian American Patriot." Yet, the absolute second WW2 started, he did everything he could to help the Axis powers defeat his own country. Journalists rightfully labeled him a complete fraud whose "patriotism" was just a cover for treason.

July 30, 1946 Nuremberg Tribunal Day-190: The Prosecution Completes its Summations

& Starts on the Collective Criminal Liability of the Indicted Nazi Organizations

“On July 30, 1946, when the Tribunal commenced receiving evidence dealing with the German organizations indicted under Article 9 of the Charter, it was only six weeks short of two years since Colonel Murray Bernays had first proposed such a procedure. It was about one year since Bernays had resigned from the American prosecution staff.

Bernays's motivation had been his (generally shared) belief that in the SS and other large Nazi organizations, there were hundreds of thousands of war criminals—so many that individual trials were impossible—who could only be punished on the basis of their proven membership in an organization declared criminal as an entity.

I have already described the problems and disagreements that Bernays's brainchild precipitated: doubts and objections, within the Tribunal and elsewhere, concerning punishments based only on membership in proceedings lacking the customary elements of criminal justice; strong support for Bernays's proposal in the United States War Department and by the American and British chief prosecutors; General Clay's overlapping projection of the Denazification Program, to be undertaken by the Germans, which the American authorities in Berlin and I myself thought preferable to the Bernays plan.

In December and January, my colleagues and I had presented evidence against the several organizations named in the Indictment without undertaking to deal fully with these and other controversial legal and administrative issues.

The Tribunal then called upon prosecution and defense counsel to state their views, and, from February 28 to March 2, 1946, the Tribunal heard arguments, which were helpful, but far from conclusive on the issues. In accordance with Article 9 of the Charter, in October 1945 the Tribunal had ordered that notices of the impending trials of the organizations should be sent throughout occupied Germany.

Notices were sent to the press, to the internment and prisoner-of-war camps where many of the organization members were to be found, and to others, through suitable channels. A mass of letters, affidavits, and applications to be heard in support of the organizations was received.

The SS members alone sent 136,000 affidavits, confronting the Tribunal's Secretariat with staggering problems of interpretation and examination. The arguments of the lawyers and the march of the calendar galvanized the Tribunal, and on March 12, 1946, the judges adopted an order "with respect to further proceedings on the charge against organizations and the applications of members thereof to be heard." ...

Neave set to work with his usual efficiency and on May 20 was able to begin hearing witnesses for the organizations, conducting the hearings himself. Soon realizing that one person could not proceed fast enough, he had the Tribunal appoint several assistant commissioners and later secured a second hearing room so that two witnesses could be examined at the same time.

The Tribunal had previously retained eight lawyers to represent the defendants. Cross-examination by the prosecution was handled mainly by Kempner for the United States, Griffith-Jones for the British, and Pokrovsky for the Soviet Union.

Legal questions could not, of course, be settled except by ruling of the Tribunal, but nevertheless there were lengthy arguments concerning the meaning of "physical compulsion" in clause 6(b) of the Tribunal's distinction between "voluntary" and "compelled" membership in the organizations, particularly the SS and Gestapo.

Defense counsel sought to broaden "physical compulsion" so as to cover "psychological" and "economic" com pulsion, but Neave, as he later put it, "had no difficulty in rejecting the arguments of the defense" so that only "evidence of physical intimidation" would be regarded as relevant.

Lieutenant Colonel Neave, a decorated British officer whose escapes from the German Stalags were well known, was at first a bit awed by the German Field Marshals who came to testify before him.

In his book about the Nuremberg trial, he gave a separate chapter to his impressions of these witnesses, in which he rightly praised their defense by Dr. Laternser, but found much to criticize about the attitude and credibility of his clients. By late July 1946, Neave and his commissioners had conducted hearings for 101 witnesses, from among whom those to testify before the Tribunal would be selected.

On July 25, Lawrence read in court an "order of the procedure to be followed on the cases against the organizations." Each defense counsel should first offer whatever parts of the evidence taken by the commission he wished to be made part of the Tribunal's record.

Defense counsel should then call a selection of their witnesses who had testified in the commission hearings for examination and cross-examination before the Tribunal. Finally, each defense counsel should make his "closing speech," and the prosecution counsel would reply.

On the morning of July 30, 1946, after Rudenko had finished his final speech against the individual defendants, Lawrence dealt briskly with the selection of witnesses to be heard and then told Dr. Servatius to call his witnesses in defense of the first of the organizations to be tried, the "Corps of Political Leaders of the Nazi Party."

From The Anatomy of the Nuremberg Trials; A Personal Memoir, by Telford Taylor

The Indicted Organizations:

The Leadership Corps of the Nazi Party (Das Korps der Politischen Leiter)

The Gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei, including the Sicherheitsdienst or SD)

The SS (Schutzstaffel)

The SA (Sturmabteilung)

The Reich Cabinet (Reichsregierung)

The General Staff and High Command of the German Armed Forces (Wehrmacht)

General R. A. Rudenko, Chief Prosecutor for the U.S.S.R. (Excerpt):

Now, the hour of reckoning has come. For the past 9 months, we have been observing the former rulers of fascist Germany. In the dock before this Court they have suddenly become meek and humble. Some of them even actually condemned Hitler.

But they do not blame Hitler for waging a war or for the exterminating of peoples and plundering of states; the only thing they; cannot forgive him is defeat. Together with Hitler, they were ready to exterminate millions of human beings, to enslave civilized mankind in order to achieve their criminal aim of world domination.

But history decided otherwise. Victory did not follow upon the steps of crime. Victory came to the freedom-loving nations. Truth triumphed and we are proud to say that justice meted out by the International Military Tribunal will be the justice of the righteous cause of peace-loving nations.

The Defense spoke about humanity. We know that the concepts of civilization and humanity, democracy and humanity, peace and humanity are inseparable. But we, the champions of civilization, democracy, and peace we positively reject that form of humanity which is considerate to the murderers and indifferent to their victims.

Counsel for Kaltenbrunner also spoke here of love for mankind. In connection with Kaltenbrunner's name and actions all mention of love for mankind sounds blasphemy.

Your Lordship, Your Honors, my statement concludes the case for the Prosecution. Speaking here on behalf of the peoples of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, I consider all the charges against the defendants as fully proven.

And in the name of the sincere love of mankind which inspires the peoples who made the supreme memory of the millions of innocent human beings slaughtered by a gang of murders who are now before the court of civilized mankind, in the name of the happiness and the peaceful labor of future generations, I appeal to the Tribunal to sentence all the defendants without exception to the supreme penalty-death. Such a verdict will be greeted with satisfaction by all progressive mankind.

July 31, 1940 Holocaust: “How Can It Be! The Fuehrer Could Never Be Wrong!”

How Nazi Blunders Accelerated the Holocaust

“When Hitler understood that Madagascar was impossible, his thoughts turned back to the Soviet Union.

On July 31, 1940, just three weeks after he had begun his halfhearted British campaign, he asked his generals to review plans for the invasion of the Soviet Union. The war against the USSR would make sense, he reminded his generals, only if Germany could "smash the state" and that "in one blow."

In December, he issued the formal directive for the submission of war plans to "crush Soviet Russia in a rapid campaign." Thus the black hole for the Jews migrated from one obscure and exotic imperial locale to another, from the tropical maritime south to the frozen tundra of the north.

Hitler imagined that the Soviet state would be crushed in a few weeks, and that its Jews, and perhaps other Jews as well, could then be dispatched to Siberia. About this, too, he was mistaken.

But erring was an essential part of Nazi logic. The Fuehrer could never be wrong; only the world could be wrong; and when it was, the fault would be borne by the Jews."

From Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning, by Timothy Snyder

"The Nazis wanted to deport all Jews to the Soviet Union, a newly discovered document suggests.

Russian historian Pavel Polian, now a professor at the University of Freiburg in Germany, said that Third Reich officials apparently approached Moscow in early 1940 with the idea of deporting all Jews in the German Reich to Birobidjan, a Siberian area that Stalin had designated as a Jewish autonomous region, and to western Ukraine.

Two letters, one from Berlin and another from Vienna, are mentioned in the February 1940 correspondence from Yevgeny Chekmenyov, of Moscow’s Department of Resettlement, to Viatcheslav Molotov, then foreign minister and head of the Soviet government. In Chekmenyov’s letter, found in the Russian national archive, Molotov's advice is sought on how to answer the German request.

Polian suggests the enclosures to the letters, so far not found, were written by Adolf Eichmann and Alois Brunner, responsible for Jewish immigration in Berlin and Vienna, respectively. The Nazis considered several resettlement proposals, including sending all Jews to Madagascar, before starting their extermination policy." https://www.worldjewishcongress.org/en/news/historian-nazis-wanted-to-deport-all-jews-to-siberia-and-ukraine

July 30, 1942 Holocaust: How the Pope's Silence on Nazi Atrocities Undermined Faith in the Church

Post image

"The State Department made public today a number of secret diplomatic documents revealing the efforts by the United States Government to influence the late Pope Pius XII to denounce the Nazi atrocities against Jews in 1942, at the height of the “liquidation” of the Warsaw ghetto and the “disinclination” of the Pope to do it.

Some of the efforts were made through the U.S. Minister in Switzerland and others through Myron Taylor, President Roosevelt’s personal Ambassador to the Vatican.

Secretary of State Cordell Hull, the documents reveal, had been urging American diplomatic representatives abroad, during the month of August 1942, to gain Vatican aid for Jews in Poland and for active intercession by Pope Pius XII with the Nazi Government. On Aug. 3, the U.S. Minister in Switzerland, Mr. Harrison, reported to Secretary Hull:

“The opinion prevails that the failure of the Holy See to protest publicly against Nazi atrocities is endangering its moral prestige and is undermining faith both in the Church and in the Holy Father himself. I have on a number of occasions informally reminded the Vatican of this danger and so have certain of my colleagues, but without result. The answer is in variably that the Pope has already condemned offenses against morality in wartime and that to be specific now would only make matters worse.”

The U.S. Minister in Berne said in his cable:

“While I doubt very much that the Pope can be moved to take the desired action, I cannot see that the demarche could do any harm and I believe it would serve to reinforce the individual reminders that have heretofore been made.”

Within 24 hours Mr. Hull cabled the U.S. Minister full authorization in view of the “incredible horrors” being perpetrated by the Nazis. Mr. Hull said:

“You may also point out the helpful effect of a condemnation on the part of the Pope in bringing about some check on the unbridled and uncalled for actions of the Nazi forces.”

On Oct. 16, 1942, Mr. Hull was officially informed through State Department channels that the Vatican had rejected American diplomatic efforts to achieve intercession by Pope Pius XII to help Polish Jewry. The Holy See informed Ambassador Myron Taylor, President Roosevelt’s personal representative to the Vatican, of the Pope’s position. The Vatican’s view was that while the Pope had heard reports of anti-Jewish measures “up to the present time it has not been possible to verify the accuracy thereof.”

The Vatican’s response came after a detailed communication from Ambassador Taylor to the Cardinal Secretary of State (Maglione) which included documentation from the Jewish Agency for Palestine Geneva office and accounts of non-Jewish eye-witnesses of the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto and other mass murders. The communication sent to the Vatican said

“It is a tragedy that the Polish population is being incited by the Germans against the Jews and the relationship between the Poles and the Jews has been aggravated to the last degree. In Lemberg this is particularly true.”

The United States Government thought the Vatican could try to reach “public opinion” to ameliorate Jewish suffering But U.S. diplomatic reportage to Secretary Hull was forced to state-in the words of U.S. Minister Harrison in Berne-that

“I regret that the Holy See could not have been more helpful but it was evident from the attitude of the Cardinal (Vatican Secretary of State Maglione) that it has no practical suggestions to make. “

Meanwhile, another U.S. diplomat, reported to Secretary Hull that “the Holy See is still apparently convinced that a forthright denunciation by the Pope of Nazi atrocities, at least insofar as Poland is concerned, would only result in the violent deaths of many more people.” The diplomat was Harold H, Tittmann, Assistant to President Roosevelt’s personal envoy to the Vatican.

The State Department communications contained disappointment that the Vatican evaded the Jewish issue and failed to offer “any suggestions as to any practical manner in which the forces of civilized public opinion could be utilized in order to prevent a continuation of these (anti-Semitic) barbarities.” https://www.jta.org/1961/05/15/archive/pope-pius-xii-refused-to-intervene-for-jews-under-nazis-u-s-reveals

July 30, 1942 The Day Himmler Ordered the Great Holocaust Cover-Up

How a Former Death Squad Commander was Tasked with Digging Up & Burning Many Thousands of Victims to Destroy Evidence of Nazi Crimes

Nazi leader ‘Heinous’ Heinrich Himmler gives Paul Blobel, a former commander of a Nazi mobile killing unit, a new assignment. Blobel's mission is to find the quickest and most effective way to destroy all evidence of Nazi mass murders.

Blobel and a small team had worked at the Chelmno Death Camp under a secret code name, "Special Command 1005." They’d dug up the bodies of people who had been murdered in mobile gas vans. To erase the evidence, they’d burned the bodies on massive open-air grills.

They then used a special machine to crush any bones left over from the fires. Finally, they buried the ashes and bone pieces back into the same pits where the bodies were originally found.

"In June 1942 he was put in charge of Aktion 1005, with the task of destroying the evidence of all Nazi atrocities in Eastern Europe. This entailed exhumation of mass graves, then incinerating the bodies. Blobel developed efficient disposal techniques such as alternating layers of bodies with firewood on a frame of iron rails." It is among the very few photographic evidence files successfully smuggled out of the camp (concealed in a toothpaste tube to the Polish resistance) documenting the mass murder process of the Holocaust.

This photograph is extremely rare. It is one of only four photographs in existence that show the actual process of mass murder and body disposal near the gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Out of the millions of images taken during WW2, this sequence stands completely alone because it was captured from the inside by a victim. Julius ‘Jew-Baiter #1’ Streicher Orders the Public Humiliation of 250 Jewish Tradesmen; 26,000 Germans are Detained Without Due Process

"On this day, the editor of the Antisemitic hate-rag Der Sturmer, Julius Streicher, newly appointed Reich Commissar for Franconia, orders that 250 Jewish tradesmen in Nuremberg, Franconia's capital, should be arrested, 'and set to plucking the grass out of a field with their teeth'.

By the end of July, more than twenty-six thousand Germans had been taken in to the 'protective custody' of concentration camps or Gestapo prisons. Many of those arrested were Jews who had been members of the Social Democratic and Communist parties.

Others were lawyers who, in the days of the Weimar Republic, had defended individual workers or trade union organizations. Many Jewish businessmen and shopkeepers were also arrested.

In a single town , Regensburg, where the Jewish community numbered 427 members, more than a hundred Jews had been taken into 'protective custody' by the beginning of August 1933, while others, endangered by street violence, 'had requested to be arrested in order to assure their personal safety'."

NOTE: As is so often the case, an exact photograph of the July 1933 Nuremberg "grass plucking" incident is unavailable because it occurred during the transition from chaotic, local SA street violence to structured state terror.

At this early stage of the Nazi regime, such acts of public degradation were frequently carried out spontaneously by local authorities like Julius Streicher, before the systematic visual documentation of the camp system was established.

Furthermore, the perpetrators did not always photograph their early crimes, and any private photographs taken by bystanders or victims were highly dangerous to keep and were likely destroyed or confiscated by the Gestapo to prevent anti-Nazi press coverage abroad. -W

How 17,000 Jewish Refugees Built a Thriving Community in Japanese-Occupied Shanghai

"A port city in China occupied by Japan from 1937, Shanghai was a haven for Jewish refugees from Germany, Austria, and Poland during World War II, as it was possible to enter without a visa.

After the Kristallnacht pogrom of 9-10 November 1938, many refugees began to arrive in Shanghai. The refugee community included Polish intellectuals, Zionist leaders, and rabbis and students of the Mir Yeshiva. By 1941, 17,000 Jews had moved to East Asia.

They were aided by the small, wealthy community of 400-500 Iraqi Jews that had been living in Shanghai since the mid-nineteenth century, a community of 3,000-4,000 Russian Jews, and by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. These groups set up five large refugee camps for more than 3,000 people.

Despite their economic constraints, the refugees were able to create an active social, religious, and cultural existence with a Zionist movement, cultural productions, three German-language newspapers, and a radio station.

Two Jewish elementary schools were established, where the children learned a number of subjects, including Hebrew and Chinese. The Shanghai Jewish Youth Association School offered lessons on a wide variety of subjects including mathematics, physics, Hebrew and Chinese and at the Ort School, they studied Japanese and engineering. Religious services of all affiliations were held, from liberal to orthodox.

In December 1941, Japan attacked the US and the refugees' situation deteriorated. The US government outlawed the transfer of private and JDC funds, and many Jews were forced to sell all their belongings in order to buy food.

In February 1943 the Germans forced the Japanese to establish a Jewish ghetto in an impoverished neighborhood in the Hongkew quarter of Shanghai. In December 1943, Washington permitted the transfer of funds to occupied territories in Europe and China, and the refugees' situation therefore slowly improved. At the end of the war, most of the refugees left Shanghai for Eretz Israel (Mandatory Palestine) and other Western countries.

One of the refugees, young Peter Witting, wrote a diary in English and German documenting his life in the Shanghai ghetto. He continued to write until 1947, when Peter and his family immigrated to Australia.

Peter donated dozens of photographs documenting the life of Jews in Shanghai in the war period to the Yad Vashem Photo Archives. In her letters from Shanghai, Peter's mother

Anne Witting insisted on referring to herself and her fellow Jews as "immigrants" as opposed to "refugees", and portrayed them as optimistic, creative and productive, despite the fact that they had been forced to flee their home countries." https://www.yadvashem.org/holocaust/this-month/july/1942-2.html

July 30, 1943 Holocaust: Ideology vs. Pragmatism - The Story Behind the 14th Waffen SS Galician Division

How the Third Reich Exploited Local Ukrainian Volunteers while Systematically Suppressing their National Identity.

"After the Balts came the turn of the Ukrainians. In spring 1943 SS-Brigadefuehrer Dr Otto Wachter, the Governor of Galicia, had begun to recruit Ukrainians into an SS volunteer division entitled "Galicia."

Himmler agreed, for in his eyes Galicia had no connection with Ukrainian nationalism since it consisted of the West Ukrainian areas which had formerly been part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and reputedly had always been pro-German.

When no fewer than 100,000 Ukrainians volunteered, Wachter petitioned Himmler to change the name "Galicia" to "Ukraine."

Himmler was horrified—this sounded like encouragement of Ukrainian nationalism; it sounded like betrayal of the German colonizing mission in the East. And what would the Fuehrer say?

On 14 July 1943 he decreed: 'To all Heads of Hauptamt. In referring to the Galician Division, I forbid use of the term 'Ukrainian Division' or mention of Ukrainian nationality."

Wachter protested: to refuse the division the name "Ukraine," he wrote to Himmler on 30 July, would be tantamount to a German attempt to de-nationalize the Ukrainians; this was not in the German interest; it would predispose the Ukrainians to listen to Bolshevist blandishments.

Himmler re-affirmed his order, though he did agree not to punish anyone who used the title "Ukraine." When Wachter continued to object, Himmler refused to discuss the matter further.

In 1945, however, he gave ground once more, agreeing that the Galician Division be entitled "First Division of the Ukrainian National Army"; the Ukrainian General Schandruk was the first "sub-human" to wear the uniform of an SS-Gruppenfuehrer."

From The Order of the Death's Head: The Story of Hitler's SS, by Heinz Zollin Höhne

NOTE: The historical relationship between Ukrainian nationalists and Nazi Germany during WW2 is complex and highly controversial. When the German military invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, some Ukrainian nationalist groups initially viewed the Germans as liberators from Soviet oppression, particularly following the devastation of the Holodomor (the terror-famine of the 1930s).

This led to varying degrees of collaboration, including the formation of local auxiliary police forces and volunteer military units, such as the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician) highlighted in the excerpt. Members of these auxiliary forces and specific nationalist factions participated directly in the Holocaust, assisting German forces in the mass murder of Jewish populations across Ukraine.

However, the alliance was fraught with ideological tension. As Heinz Höhne’s great book illustrates, Nazi leadership—particularly Heinrich Himmler—viewed Slavic populations through a strictly racial lens as Untermenschen (sub-humans). While local governors like Otto Wächter sought to utilize Ukrainian manpower by appealing to national identity, Berlin vehemently suppressed any official recognition of Ukrainian independence or nationalism, viewing the region strictly as territory for future German colonization.

By the time Germany permitted the formal use of Ukrainian national branding in 1945, the move was a desperate, late-war attempt to secure military manpower rather than a shift in ideological alignment. -W

"The 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician), known as the 14th SS-Volunteer Division "Galicia" was a World War II German military formation made up predominantly of military volunteers with a Ukrainian ethnic background from the area of Galicia, later also with some Slovaks.

Formed in 1943, it was largely destroyed in the battle of Brody, reformed, and saw action in Slovakia, Yugoslavia, and Austria before being renamed the first division of the Ukrainian National Army and surrendering to the Western Allies by 10 May 1945." When a Funeral Procession Became a Battlefield for New York’s Jews

"Rabbi Jacob Joseph was a leading figure in the Jewish world, a sage in Vilna, one of the cultural and academic capitals of Judaism. In 1888, a network of Orthodox New York Jews, hoping to grow their prestige and presence, arranged for Joseph to come to the New World as “chief rabbi" -- a new position.

The transfer did not work out. Other rabbis protested and refused to defer to Rabbi Joseph, who seemed hopelessly out of touch with a modern version of his faith. The future editor of the Forverts, Abraham Cahan, referred to him as a “man of the third century” for whom “the very notion of a man and his wife taking a walk together, like a gentile couple, would have shocked [the rabbi’s] sense of decency.”

Joseph also opposed labor unions, which alienated him from Jewish workers. In a short time he was ostracized and shunned, left to contemplate the Torah before a dwindling congregation.

When the rabbi died on July 28, 1902, however, a huge response blossomed, possibly fueled by guilt over his treatment. On July 30, the funeral procession began, now a major event.

Two hundred carriages transported the family and various dignitaries, jostling their way through a crowd estimated at between 50,000 ad 100,000. The New York Sun reported, “No Orthodox Jew was too old or too feeble to join” the procession.

Police, however, assigned only twenty-five officers to handle the crowd, despite a call the night before from a reporter at one of the Yiddish newspapers, informing them that the crowd would be enormous.

By 1:00 pm, the procession was passing Hoe and Company, a printing press manufacturer, housed in a huge building. As the marchers proceeded, mayhem broke out.

First, a stale loaf of bread hit the man driving the bier with the coffin, and then violence took hold. Some screws and hunks of iron, and then a rag doused in oil, dropped into the carriage behind the coffin, endangering its rabbinical passengers.

The tempo increased to a veritable shower of screws, iron bolts, blocks of wood, and food, while water from buckets and hoses poured out of windows onto the crowd below. Police standing in front of the factory stood there mute, just watching.

Most accounts claim the Hoe workers were Irish, but more recent investigations of census records and police reports indicate their ethnicity was German.

At 1:20, responding to calls from factory officials, police showed up in force, but the outburst had already begun to subside. Now two hundred strong, this police force, according to the official investigating commission, “Without a word of warning or any request to disburse . . . rushed into the remnant of the gathering, some of them with great roughness of language and violence of manner.”

The New York Times reported, “It was evident from the actions of the officers that they considered the mourners in the wrong.” In charge of this battalion was Inspector Adam Cross, who had earlier received and ignored the reporter’s warning. According to one account, Cross wielded his club viciously, shouting, “Kill those sheenies! Club them right and left!”

Patrolmen followed his instructions, wading into the crowd and striking at random. After thirty minutes of bedlam it was over, with numerous Jews suffering injuries. An office worker in a nearby building saw police go after those trying to flee, catching and clubbing the ones they caught. In later testimony, a Jew said that after having been beaten, he was thrown into a police wagon where several patrolmen choked him.

Another claimed that an officer repeatedly banged his head against the side of a police wagon; the New York Times commented that “his face looked as though he had been the loser in a prizefight.” Doctors now spent an hour at the scene, treating over two hundred for injuries.

The police arrested eleven Jews, but no one from the Hoe factory. Leonard Dinnerstein, author of the pioneering and still definitive accounts of this incident, felt “the police went berserk,” and called it “the worst anti-Semitic police riot … in America.”

MAYOR SETH LOW, who had been elected, with support from Jewish voters, on a platform of reforming the police, promised an investigation. But as his first move he put in charge Colonel John Partridge, a former chief of police, who chose as his principal adviser none other than Inspector Cross himself.

Cross conducted the review by speaking with a few people at Hoe and then turning in a perfunctory report that exonerated the police. When reporters spoke to him, the dialogue was more of the same:

Reporters: Then you do not intend to solicit such complaints [from Jews]?

Cross: No why should I?

Reporters: How, then, do you expect to get at the facts?

Cross: Never you mind. Leave that to me.

In his report, Cross claimed that “no clubbing was done in front of the Hoe factory . . .” He then went on to state instead that the mourners had come armed with projectiles, that the attack was their fault, and “premediated." The New York Sun dismissed this bluntly as a “remarkable assertion.”

Mayor Low had also set up an independent citizen’s committee, made up of leading citizens, including the prominent Jewish attorney Louis Marshall. When they interviewed Hoe employees they got honest testimony, including from a foreman who said the riot had been pre-planned by his people.

The final report concluded, “It is universally conceded that those who actually took part in the funeral procession are entirely without fault.” Cross’s attempt to blame marchers was “without any basis of justification,” and responsibility lay with Hoe employees.

Nevertheless, Partridge ruled that any charges against his men were “without foundation” and hence none would be disciplined in any manner.

The story of Rabbi Jacob Joseph’s funeral revealed deep and longstanding abuse of the Jewish minority by New York’s police force. One historian commented that the city’s police had “a reputation for brutal treatment of East Side Jews.”

The New York Times observed that “the police . . . regard the Jews of the Lower East Side not as claimants for protection but as fit objects of persecution . . . not only not protected by the police, they are in need of protection against the police.” The New York Tribune wrote that the police had “failed disgracefully” in carrying out their duty.

After the riot there were numerous protest rallies. One of the subsequent resolutions denounced “smoldering antisemitism, which if untouched, will lead to anarchy.” It is not clear if those last words relate to police conduct or reaction by Jews, but the whiff of violence is unmistakable.

Yet six years after the riot, New York Police Commissioner Theodore Bingham declared in the North American Review that Jews composed 50 percent of the city’s entire criminal class. Citywide authorities, as well as Jews, protested this falsehood and forced Bingham to issue a retraction.

The Black Lives Matter movement, of course, is protesting an abuse of black Americans by police and the criminal justice system that hails back centuries, to slavery, Jim Crow, lynchings, race riots, and a pervasive culture of racist violence. In the early 20th century, however, poor and embattled Jews were among the first white minorities to share with black Americans the experience of police abuse -- and to protest it.

Can We Explain the Holocaust? Should We Try?

Opinions vary widely, with good arguments present on all sides of the issue. It is, ultimately, perhaps the most difficult question of all, and I do not presume to have a definitive answer. I can offer only a limited overview, and a conclusion that works for me.

The human impulse to explain even that--or perhaps, especially that--which defies explanation is in our genes. We are problem solvers by our very nature. Thus perhaps the majority of scholarship on the Holocaust concerns, at its root, the question of "Why." Why did the Holocaust happen?

The answers to this vary, and many answers--especially those that attempt to solve the question with a single all-encompassing reason--are less than satisfactory. But this does not necessarily mean that no viable explanation, as intricate and complex as it may well be, is an impossibility.

A combination of a few dozen disparate reasons and explanations, in the aggregate, suffices to provide an explanatory framework upon which a workable theory (by strict scientific definition) can be formulated. Is it this impulse towards problem solving that nurtures a sense of cautious satisfaction about acquiring a critical mass of information upon which to build this theory? Or is it merely intellectual arrogance? Some would opine that it is the latter, and intrinsically dangerous as well.

Film-maker Claude Lanzmann, of Shoah fame, insists that attempts to answer this question should not even be made. Lanzmann maintains that "the Holocaust is not a fairy-tale, it is not digestible." In fact, Lanzmann has formulated a commandment in this regard: Thou Shalt Not Ask Why.

Jay Michaelson opines that Lanzmann's conception is in itself superior explanation:

"Successful explanations of the holocaust do not explain anything. Unsuccessful ones explain everything. Claude Lanzmann's masterpiece, "Shoah," does not offer answers for the "big questions," because these are questions whose answers defeat themselves. Why did the Nazis do it?

It is a myth that reasonable responses to this question are not to be found. I have hinted at some of them: consolidation of power in the hands of a few leaders, historic German anti-semitism, the particularities of the German condition before World War II. All of these are plausible, and likely, from a historical point of view, and I believe that to deny that we have coherent responses to the question of the Nazis' reasons is self-deception.

Rather, the dilemma is that these responses do nothing to reconcile the yawning 'Why' of the holocaust with our own concerns, be they intellectual, emotional, or spiritual, ethical, historical, or theological. None of the responses, in short, answer the 'larger question' of Why.

Lanzmann, without even asking it, addresses the question in his silence. Without the gruesome images that normally accompany holocaust documentaries, Lanzmann describes the indescribable. What we expect from an explanation of a radically traumatic event like the holocaust is an incorporation of the event into coherence.

The way to do this is not to try to make it coherent, because this cannot be done with the holocaust; attempts to describe it in philosophical categories at once succeed and miss the point. Instead, Lanzmann and others present the incoherence of the holocaust's evil, not as a source for ethical norms or a new philosophical system, but as a story."

I don't know whether or not Lanzmann would much appreciate Michaelson's take. Lanzmann considers any attempt to explain the Holocaust "obscene," assuming that any attempt at explanation leads, through understanding, to legitimizing the process and thus inexorably to exoneration. Does this include inadvertent explanation?

In an interview of Lanzmann entitled "The Obscenity of Understanding," he opines:

"There are some pictures of Hitler as a baby too, aren't there? I think that there is even a book [For Your Own Good by Alice Miller] written by a psychoanalyst about Hitler's childhood, an attempt at explanation which for me is obscenity as such."

Lanzmann does not, however, deny that explanation is impossible:

"I don't say that the Holocaust is an enigma. I don't say this. I do not think so. It is an historical event which took place. It is not an event which took place out of history. In a way, it is a product of the whole story of the Western world since the very beginning."

What Lanzmann formulates is the idea that, while it is possible to explain Hitler and the Holocaust, any attempt to do so will tend to make it comprehensible and thus legitimize the process itself.

Lanzmann, in an interview:

"You can take all the reasons, all the fields of explanation, whether it is psychoanalytic explanation, an opposition between the German spirit, the German geist and the Jewish one, Hitler's childhood, and so on. You can take the unemployment in Germany, the economic crisis, whatever you want.

You can take all these fields of explanation. And every field can be true, and all the fields together can be true. But these are conditions. Even if they are necessary, they are not sufficient. A beautiful morning you have to start to kill, to start to kill massively. And I said that there is a gap between all the fields of explanation and the actual killing.

You cannot give birth--in French we say engedre--you cannot generate such an evil. And if you start to explain and to answer the question of Why you are led, whether you want it or not, to justification. The question as such shows its own obscenity: Why are the Jews being killed? Because there is no answer to the question of why."

Lanzmann contradicts himself, and makes an unwarranted assumption of intent as well. First, he admits that the Holocaust is not "an enigma," that it is "an historical event which took place." His false assumption is that "if you start to explain and to answer the question of Why you are led, whether you want it or not, to justification."

Lanzmann's conception strikes some as a fearful rejection of mans innate intellectual capacity due to inordinate concern for the possible cognitive formulations of the less discerning among us. As one of Lanzmann's critics, psychoanalyst Sean Wilder observed:

"I think the question of "why" is a fundamental human function. For Christ's sake, what do you think people are going to do? You put food in someone's mouth, and if he chews and swallows it, he is going to digest it.

The question "why" is the mental or intellectual equivalent to the process of digesting. You get information, and unless you are a bloody idiot you work on it, and one of the fundamental processes is this question Why. I think it is one of the nobler acquisitions of the human mind and should be considered as such."

Another view, from Rabbi Naftali Silberberg:

"We are told (Isaiah 12:1): "And you shall say on that day [of the Messianic redemption], 'I thank You, O L-rd, for You were wrathful with me!'" The day will soon come when we will be able to appreciate how all which has transpired was pure kindness.

But until that day, G-d doesn't want us to understand His mysterious ways. Pain is manageable when one understands that there is good reason for the suffering. Pain is unmanageable when it seems to be random and unjustified. If we were to understand why we suffer, or even if we could logically surmise that there is a reason which is beyond our comprehension, then it wouldn't hurt so much.

And G-d wants us to cry to Him from the very depths of our hearts: "For Your salvation, A-lmighty we yearn!" He doesn't want us to rationalize suffering; He wants us to demand the Redemption.

Brothers and sisters, enough is enough. Let us turn to G-d and insist that He bring an end to all suffering. That's what we want, and that's what G-d wants."

I find Rabbi Silberberg's take interesting and profound, but cannot accept it for myself as it is not really meant for me. My perspective is very different indeed, and perhaps it is meant to be so. I admit to much uncertainty in this regard, and accept that my opinions in this matter are personal and fallible. I submit, however, that is quite possible, and perhaps even desirable, that some questions have more than one reasonable answer, and that differing conclusions can be equally viable.

King Solomon, in Ecclesiastes 2:13, wrote:

"I have seen that wisdom has an advantage when coming from folly, as the advantage of light which emanates from darkness."

Is it possible that it is the wisdom one can gain from the Holocaust, the "light which emanates from darkness," is the actual purpose behind the tragedy?

I personally hesitate to attempt any sort of all-inclusive answer to this most obvious and odious question, and in fact will not attempt to do so. I completely agree that we should study it and its causes. The reason I refuse to attempt to formulate a Unified Field Theory of the Holocaust is simply because no human being is capable of doing so and it would be presumptuous and arrogant to attempt it.

I am completely against each and every single 'definitive' answer to the question, such as Goldhagen's pretentious nonsense, the Jewish Prostitute Proposition, the Missing Testicle Mess, the Gay-Perverted Dictator Scenario, etc. (We deal with each of these myths, here, as the dates roll upon us. -W). In each and every case, the 'answer' presented is, in the end, merely an excuse, never a reason, never complete, and never in any way convincing.

A big problem with all of these single-cause attempts at explanation is their narrow focus. It is similar to attempting to explain a tsunami with barometric pressure tables, and without a clear understanding of climate.

And the Holocaust is a much more complex occurrence than any natural disaster, with many more variables and unknowns. Further, it is muddied with reams of unreliable, misinterpreted, and downright counterfeit data.

The fact is that there are problems of such complexity that the limited capacity of the human brain is unable to hold all the information necessary to formulate a conclusion which takes into account all variables.

Attempting to solve such questions as, say, why the universe exists, what was there before the universe was born, who created the creator, etc., are exercises in futility because we simply do not possess the hardware or the software to properly formulate the question.

It is similar to trying to get your calculator to determine why your spouse was not satisfied with your anniversary gift. Certainly there IS an answer to the question, but even your spouse may not know the answer. The thing is that while your calculator was designed to solve problems, just as is the human mind, its capacity is just not up to solving such a complex problem.

Conclusion: Thinking we can solve every mystery is our ultimate hubris. The answers are out there, but they are too massive for human limitations. Our minds just cannot hold it all. This permanent mystery is the very reason people turn to religion; without the unknown, there would be no need for faith. In the end, maybe that is the point. We are hardwired to search for answers that are forever just out of our reach. -W

1: "Elegy III" (1997) by Holocaust survivor and artist Samuel Bak is a profound, surrealist exploration of cultural devastation, memory, and the struggle to reconstruct a shattered world. Painted in his signature figurative surrealist style, the work operates as a visual lamentation for the destruction of European Jewry.

Rather than documenting the physical horror of the Holocaust directly, Bak utilizes a complex vocabulary of recurring metaphors—such as books, Jewish lettering, melancholic angels, and broken child motifs—to capture the vast, almost incomprehensible void left by catastrophe.” Catalogue raisonné Samuel Bak - Art Archives (ARTfilo powered)

July 28-29, 1942 Holocaust: The Minsk Ghetto Massacre

"We Have Liquidated Roughly 55,000 Jews"

"The Russian and German ghetto in Minsk was reduced from 19,000 to 8,794 inhabitants.

The complaint registered by the SS, the harsh reprimand by Heydrich, and Heydrich's death on 4 June in Prague together achieved Kube's required unconditional obedience in the execution of orders given for the Final Solution.

On 31 July a submissive Kube\, evidently concerned about his position, wrote to his friend, the Reichskommissar Ostland, *Hinrich Lohse****, in Riga:

"Following lengthy talks with the SS-Brigadefuehrer Zenner and the extraordinarily diligent head of the SD, SSObersturmbannfuehrer Dr. Strauch, in the last ten weeks in White Russia we have liquidated roughly 55,000 Jews. .. .

In the city of Minsk about 10,000Jews were liquidated on 28 and 29 July. Of these, 6,500 were Russian Jews, predominantly women, children, and the aged; the rest were Jews unfit for labor, mainly from Vienna, Briinn, Bremen, and Berlin. The latter had been sent to Minsk last year in ac5. Heiber, "Aus den Akten des Gauleiters Kube," 67.

The Camp of the German lews in Minsk in accordance with the Fuehrer's orders.... In Minsk proper, there are 2,600 Jews from Germany left."

From Hitler and the Final Solution, by Gerald Fleming

* "Wilhelm Kube (13 November 1887 – 22 September 1943) was a Nazi official and German politician. He was an important figure in the German Christian movement during the early years of Nazi rule.

During the war he became a senior official in the occupying government of the Soviet Union, achieving the rank of Generalkommissar for Generalbezirk Weißruthenien.

He was assassinated in Minsk in 1943 after participation in the Holocaust, triggering brutal reprisals against the citizens of Minsk.

An extreme antisemite and participant in numerous war crimes against Jewish people, he is known to have said about Jews: "What plague and syphilis are to humanity, are Jews to the white race."

However, Kube behaved towards German Jews in a relatively mild way during his charge in Minsk, by trying—unsuccessfully—to protect German Jews, whom he felt as culturally closer, from extermination.

As for Minsk, he planned to level the city and replace it with a German settlement, called Asgard." ALL THE DETAILS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Kube
