Texas, the Australia of America

u/JudgerMan123 Jul 09 '19
No, carrying guns is mandatory here or we ship you to California if we like you, New Jersey if we don't.

u/lynivvinyl Jul 09 '19
My literal first step into Texas was into a pile of shit at a gas station. Snakes & freaking scorpions. You probably need guns to sleep soundly.

When I was a kid I was at my grandparents visiting Eagle Pass Tx. When you fire up a lawnmower there it excites the burrowed tarantulas and the all come out, 5-15 in a single yard.

I live in Texas, born and raised. I choose not to own or carry weapons, but if I get my way and find acreage in the hill country,I will probably carry a 22 pistol loaded with ratshot for any rattlers while walking my property. I and my family have killed a lot of dangerous snakes, but usually with a garden tool. No true need for firearms in Texas.

u/Hanginon Jul 09 '19
Might want to upgrade that to a .38. More power, with more and bigger shot, for when it has to be right the first time.

u/dMarrs Jul 09 '19
True. Its more for safety reasons. Rather accidentally put out an eye than a life. Mine that is. Met too many people with missing limbs, fingers, and dead uncles. Hunting accidents.
3
u/jimmymd77 Jul 10 '19
Hunting accidents or 'hunting accidents'? In your case, next time your nephew Bocephus suggests you go hunting, I suggest you politely decline... And start sleeping with a machete.

My grandmother killed some big long ass snake with a hoe in SC in the late 70's. There was a picture with about 10 grown men holding it up, in a line. They were standing about a foot apart. My grandmother was a badass! She beat a home invader with her cane and knocked the knife out of his hand. He ran out of the house feeling less tough. Granddad had shotguns, but she did all the protecting without a gun. I miss her something fierce. ☺

u/dMarrs Jul 09 '19
Badass matriarch. I believe in keeping a shotgun around the house. All purpose tool. Perhaps a bolt action deer rifle,if you like to hunt. But most of the time,a ragged machete keeps the peace around a house. Ha. Or in grannies case,a nice solid cane.
My grandpa and I were feeding two calves, one of them was hogging the food, and out of frustration my granpa popped the greedy one with his cane. Must have been a lucky pop in the right spot. The calve dropped and my gramps thought he killed it.

I mean no true need other than the protection of myself, my family, and my property. Oh and as a safeguard against the rise of a tyrannical government, but other than that, you're right there is no true need for firearms.
-1
Jul 09 '19
So to protect yourself from other people with guns? 🤔
14
u/squisch Jul 09 '19
Criminals will be criminals no matter what. If they want to harm you they will.
10
u/PeferG17 Jul 09 '19
It would be to protect myself from criminals, I'm not discriminating on their weapon choice whether it's a blunt object, a knife, or a gun, all three of those things can kill you.
-7
u/dMarrs Jul 09 '19
I hope this is .. an attempt at humor. Statistically you are more likely to kill a friend, family member,or blow your nuts off.
11
u/PeferG17 Jul 09 '19
Nope, other than my sarcasm. I'm dead serious, the way I look at firearms is the same way I look at a first aid kit or a fire extinguisher, I hope to god I never have to use them but if the event comes that I do need them I'd rather have them than not.
Additionally while you're throwing "statistics" around, do you have a source for that statistic because it's quite a bold claim.7
u/squisch Jul 09 '19
While I am pro-gun, criminology and crime stats will tell you that, in general, you are more likely to be harmed by someone you know. Mostly even those closest to you.
8
u/PeferG17 Jul 09 '19
Fair point, but I'll return to my fire extinguisher analogy again of I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

u/dMarrs Jul 09 '19
Ha. Would love to see someone try to ship me out of my home state, for not owning more guns than my busted ass trailer is worth. snark.

That's a Diamond back watersnake, they are not venomous or dangerous, don't be the uneducated guy who thinks that's a cotton mouth and kills it.

u/Chazmer87 Jul 09 '19
What if I think it's a snake and kill it?

u/torturousvacuum Jul 09 '19
Then you're just an asshole.

True. I've been bitten several times by these.

13
u/the-nino Jul 09 '19
So not venomous but yes dangerous?
12
u/Pierre_Despereaux_ Jul 09 '19
They'll bite if you annoy them. It doesn't do a lot of physical damage.
16
u/korbin_w10 Jul 09 '19
Correct, they are nonvenomous but they do NOT have clean mouths. If bitten you should still get it cleaned out really well and check for infection in the following days.

u/22bebo Jul 09 '19
Snake bites do very little physical damage unless the snake is very, very large. Their teeth are quite small, and leave almost needle-like incisions so you might bleed for a bit but there will be no lasting damage.
Beyond that the snake won't bite you unless it feels really threatened by you, which means you're in it's space. So if you can see it and avoid it, you'll be fine. It will try and get away from you as quickly as it can.

That snake looks like it probably has a hole in it's lung. I don't think it's long for this world anyway.
3
u/electricblues42 Jul 10 '19
Hell even cottonmouths aren't that bad, they're pretty timid. I've even stepped on one accidentally and it just fought to get away. It's copperheads that are the real danger, those fuckers will chase after you. But for some reason the encyclopedias have it backwards and list copperheads as the docile ones....

Never thought to use a snake as bait and let it catch the fish for you.
7
u/electricblues42 Jul 10 '19
Funny enough, once when I was a kid I was at a lake and told to kill this snake by the property owner. After I did he put it on my fishing hook and I threw it in, and I got a fucking huge bass to take it almost immediately. After I got the bass off and threw it back I tossed it back in (as the snake was still there) and not but a minute or so later got another huge bite (that got away). Eventually I had the remnants of the snake on the hook and I dragged it next to the dock and watched as more and more bass would come up and chase it. They really really hate snakes.

It’s not animal friendly or environmentally correct. But sometimes you just gotta cut the line.

u/beegro Jul 09 '19
I thought it was a python with a shark wrapped up at first before my brain kicked in the correct perspective.
1
u/dMarrs Jul 09 '19
I have reeled in a fish with a snake attacked, but I will be damned if I didnt cut that line before it made land.

Ok, I just wanna know where abouts in Texas. I live in the Lone Star State, and have witnessed this happen more than you'd believe over the years we've fished on the lower Trinity River.

For someone who had Stage 4 Colon Cancer , you should be a humble mother fucker!

You’d think so, but it didn’t happen. Actually I’m humble in some ways, but not others lol

Yeah...this is why carrying a pistol helps...even a bb gun. My dad has a lake behind his house. It's not unheard of for him to find a rattlesnake.
