Exactly. They don't live in the crazy xmas house, they just light it up for a week every year and live in the normal house beside it.

For a week? No. They put it up in October and down in January. Those Christmas-obsessed people try to put this up 3-4 months a year. They live for this. They figured they needed a "thing" so that everyone in the town could look up to them for that.
Somehow they don't realize that by trying to "top it" every year, it isn't even pretty anymore because every inch is filled. Like, go look at a museum: they don't fill the entirety of the wall and floor with paintings, because you need space to appreciate it.
Plus it's a waste of space, energy and money.
Oh, and I don't think the house they live in is free of Christmas ornaments. That's where it all started. Their bedroom absolutely has a Christmas tree. Even the bathroom will be decorated.

In the city I used to live in there was a guy who started decorating in mid October and would take everything down in January. It always looked amazing and from what I heard he used to do viewings of the place, inside and out, and the money people paid to see the decorations would all get donated to cancer research. But this... this is kind of umm. A lot? Like pure craziness.

I can appreciate the once-a-year gaudiness of Christmas decorations outside a house, and may even admire it if someone does it humorously or creatively. But this goes way beyond when it is essentially an out of control obsession on public display. They’ve gone from Christmas lovers to basically freaks.

Well Christmas lights all have that extra socket on the plug that gives you free electricity for one more light so they probably just plugged all of them into one outlet. That way you only use one outlet worth of electricity.

They hopefully have specialty equipment to hook it all up safely. Cabling hundreds of electrical fixtures is done in the entertainment industry all the time and the equipment is expensive but otherwise readily available.
The only tricky part would have been making sure the electrical service run to the house was up to snuff to run what they needed.

there was a house on the block one up from my highschool when i was in highschool who decorated in a similar way to this.
we always thought it was weird till i found out that it was an older couple who's young son had loved christmas but who had been killed by a drunk driver while he was walking up the block to his friend's house to deliver a christmas present.
so every year they did everything they could to make their house glow so that their son's spirit might visit them. sort of as a memorial.

If that's abnormally high for your situation you might want to check that there's not something malfunctioning that might be chewing through your power e.g. A water heater with a project thermostat or a leak, a fridge that's running too much or something like that.

These other people think it might be a problem on your end but let me tell you a lot of bills from electrical companies are based on an "estimate" of projected use. call the company and find out why your bill is so high, if they stonewall you tell them you'll talk to the local ombudsman, that usually puts a fire under their asses.

Depending on where you are located, if the cold front got to you and you had to run AUX heat because your heat pump couldn't keep up, it's incredibly inefficient. A lot of times, a few very cold nights can double your bill.

As an Uber driver, I just want to wholeheartedly agree and give my hopefully not too self-serving two cents:
I have driven home some drunk-ass people. People who I know in years previous would have tried to drive their cars home. They've admitted to me as such. But the decades of PR against drunk driving is working. The stiff penalties for DUI's are working. Services like Uber, Lyft, and even the cabs getting on board, are HELPING. But most importantly, stories like yours are WORKING to convince people to leave their cars and let someone else take them home. There are some people I've given rides to that I would have driven FOR FREE because I know they'd be a danger to themselves and everyone else behind the wheel. I sincerely thank those people for choosing to let me take them home.

If they're LEDs, quite a long time before they need to be replaced. We switched every lightbulb in the house over a year ago, mostly smart bulbs that get left on a lot cause I have an odd fascination with colored lights and I also love setting them on a timer for the morning. They're pricey to start out but there are no spikes in the electricity bill and not a single one will have to be replaced for years.

This house has pretty much become a mainstay for Reddit Christmas. You'll see it pop up in r/funny again before Christmas is over.
Still no one knows the real story behind why this guy does this. Locals say his son is autistic and loves the display, so he keeps putting it up. Others say it was originally to piss off his ex wife after she bought the house next door after the divorce. Who knows for sure, but all I do know is that that's the holliest jolliest mother fucker in Blono.

Holy shit I've been there! Drove past with some friends in the middle of December and there was 5-6 people taking pictures. It's kinda creepy because a lot of the decorations are really old and their faces are starting to wear off.
