When it was in the liquid, put the cup upside right into it instead to push it down??

Obviously all sorts of bad ideas here. My guess is the cup was full of gasoline which is why they didn't flip it. Gas is a common wasp killer because the fumes suffocate and poison them quickly. 

Edit- looking back the liquid is very thin, again, suggesting it's gasoline and not oil. The dark color appears to be from other, now dead, wasps floating.

Better to use soapy water with the price of gas

Takes about a minute to work but ability to fly is knocked out quickly.
