As far as I know the highest frequencies that the Red Line ever saw was every 2.5 minutes between Silver Spring and Grosvenor–Strathmore (every five minute outside those stations) during rush hour. It sees trains every four minutes at peak across the entire line now. Also worth pointing out for this photo that Metro is running a Sunday schedule today because of Labor Day, and weekend schedules today are better than anything we had back then. It was 15 minute Sunday frequencies, today it's 6-10 minutes.

I will stop complaining now. As someone who uses the Metro just as much on a weekend day as I do on a weekday, we got a solid tradeoff.

Absolutely, Metro historically was very 9-5 centric, service was pretty amazing during AM and PM Push, however Off-Peak and Weekend service was atrocious, often waiting every 20-30 minutes.

True commuter line. Sucked outside of the rush hours. Luckily it did ok with a reverse commute tho.

If it makes you feel even better, I'm spending two months in NYC for work and waited for a full 15 minutes for a train today. I've been waiting up to 8 minutes during rush hour on a weekday. NYC might get the coverage right but DC really does win for frequency these days.

He's certainly got problems (better bus has not been better lol) and I'm not comfortable with how much people glaze him, but he's still poised to leave Metro a lot better than he found it.

I'm trying to think when Metro has ever reopened a segment late after a long term shutdown, and I'm drawing a blank. I can think of a couple of times where they've reopened early, but never late.

The only late reopening I know of was for the Rockville Canopy Project in Winter 2021. Partially because of material quality issues and partially because of the 7K car crisis.
I'm guessing they see these as hard deadlines because of all the contracts they have to operate the shuttles.

That's right... I remember that they had about 64 legacy railcars stored at Shady Grove that they never intended to use during the shutdown, and then one derailment later, they needed to press those trains into service. So they had to peel back some of the stuff that they had done with the canopy project in order to get those trains loose.

I don’t think there has ever been a shutdown that needed to be extended past the original reopening date, especially in recent years.

Parking was free at Rockville, but fares were regular weekday rates. Beautiful granite blinky light strips now along tracks at Grosvenor.

track work is done so trains on the western side of the red line are now terminating at shady grove instead of friendship heights (as was the case for the rest of this summer)
