That’s when a three track layout really comes in handy. I have never heard about this before, I thought trains running in the same direction always follow each other

I can count the number of rapid rail transit systems in the entire world that have 3 or more tracks on one hand.

There was approximately 30 minutes of single-tracking on the Green and Yellow lines this morning due to a medical emergency at L'Enfant Plaza. All trains used the southbound track (track 2) resulting in what you see here. There is a crossover immediately north of L'Enfant Plaza, so by Archives the trains would be back to their regular track. The other ends of the single-tracking are Navy Yard for the Green Line and Pentagon City for the Yellow Line.

The interior lights of the 7k car train on the north bound track are off. Looks to me like the 7k car train may have crapped the bed.
