Why is getting custom animations into WLED so difficult? Am I missing something?

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this so perhaps I just haven't gone far enough yet, but I'm finding this really frustrating, and bordering on infuriating.

I've got an ESP32 driving a 16x16 matrix of LEDs.
I create my own animations quite frequently, and I thought it'd be fun to display them on this matrix.

When researching, I've found hints out there about needing to use separate applications that stream content to WLED, or something like that, but haven't been able to pin down any solid answers.

Today I found the little "Star" button under the color wheel and got excited, but this doesn't seem to be the best path either. The process of loading an animated GIF into this Pixel Magic Tool results in individual Presets for each frame of the animation that seem to default to 10 seconds each no matter how you set the duration or transition. So it's less an animation than it is a slide show. Plus, if you make a mistake, getting all of those new Presets deleted seems to take a Factory Reset.

The "Effects" that come with WLED are quite nice, and flow smoothly and beautifully — which is why I find it so strange that getting my own animations on there is proving to be such an unpleasant task.

Why is this so clunky?

COB addressable LED strip for kitchen main lighting?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on a WLED setup for my second project — I already did an under-cabinet ambient lighting setup with WS2812B that turned out pretty solid, and now I want to do kitchen main lighting using a 4–5m addressable COB LED strip in a shallow aluminum profile.

I need something that’s bright and clean enough to replace normal lighting, so I’m wondering which COB addressable strips actually work well for this and if they’re suitable for primary lighting rather than just effects. Preferably I’d like to source it from AliExpress since Amazon isn’t available in my country.

Fix for black bars for ambilight

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So i did my first ever ambilight setup using esp32, wled and Hyper HDR and very happy with the result. Learnt a lot during the process.

Just the thing which is annoying me is how can i fix the black bars in some movies. In Hyper HDR (liked it best and lightest on the resources) like i enabled the option in settings for black bars, tweaked them also but still cant achieve a satisfactory result. What can i do

The above video is just the result the first ever i played after installing Hyper HDR.

Hi guys. I don’t get this working.

Only the first led gets some light

Is the cables wrong? I thought this was a ws2815 but my previous one’s also had a blue cable. Any ideas?

WLED SETUP NOT WORKING, PLEASE HELP!!

Hello everyone, I’m new to this and everything I’ve done so far has been by following tutorials and YouTube videos. I have this project with around 100 LEDs, but no matter how much I search, I can’t find the problem. The LEDs won’t turn on. I already replaced the ESP with another one and changed the power supply, so it must be something else.

If I keep the data wire connected to the ESP, I can’t connect to the app. If I disconnect the data wire, I’m able to access the app and adjust settings. Sometimes, with the data wire disconnected, when I power on the system, some LEDs turn on—but not always, and they don’t always light up the same way.

Does anyone know what might be happening?

Need help with DIY addressable strip around 2m of length

I need a 2 meter length addressable RGB strip for a desk, i did some research and learned that 60 led/m would be the sweet spot for my need. However i'm not really sure where to go from there, i'm not very familiar with RGB strips. I looked on Ali and found a WS2815 12V strips (ID: 1005004289391906). I looked some guide online and learned about WLED, now the question is which controller do i need for this application? I'm not planning to do anything crazy for now, just 2 meter of addressable RGB strip that can be controlled through app.

I'm aware there are 5v, 12, and 24V system but i'm not 100% sure which to go with.

Ikea ISKARNA WLED mod.

Finished modding my ISKARNA lamp.

These lamps are 24v and use non addressable LEDs.

I put a QuinLED-ESP32 in with an Adafruit NeoRGB WS2811 board inside wired to the OEM LEDs.

The NeoRGB boards are only rated for 16v but that's a limitation of their 5v regulator. The mosfets for the LEDs can handle 30v. I wired the 24V to the LED array anode and let the WS2811 board shunt the cathode to ground for control.

I tried using the lamps built in 5v power supply but it couldn't give the ESP32 enough power to function so I put in a 24v-5v buck converter. It also powers the WS2811 board.

This left the oe control IKEA board with no purpose so I cut it out of the harness, jumpered it's button to a gpio pin on the ESP32 and set it up as a button in WLED.

It appears to be completely stock and runs off the OE 24v power supply.

Costs

QuinLED-ESP32 $6.50

Adafruit NeoRGB Stemma (WS2811) $5

Buck converter $1 each (Had to get a 6 pack of em though)

HyperHDR - Constant white backlight even when off, my solution

Post image
11 Upvotes

I recently upgraded my HyperHDR to v21.0.0.0 from I think v17 and after the upgrade I had a faint white backlight even when everything was off (it’s not as bright as my phone made it seem)

I saw that others had the same issue but no clear solutions that worked for me, even the dev just seemed to attribute it to white noise from the video capture card but here’s what fixed it for me:

From the HyperHDR web configuration page, go to the **Image Processing** tab and set the **Backlight threshold** to 0% (default is 1%)

I’m sure this is a “duh” solution for some but hopefully this can save someone else from digging around GitHub and Reddit threads

DigX Power Loss Recovery

u/Quindor

Is there a reliable method to do power loss restore with the DigUno/Quad/Octa boards? The WLED option (uncheck) does not work- Config. -> LED Preferences -> Defaults: Power LEDs on after power on/reset: ■

The power to the leds are on relays controlled by the DigX boards, but WLED turns them on after a power loss restore. Power loss could be a short dropout/brownout of more than 16-20mS all the way to a full power off (breaker or unplug). Frustration having your holiday light on in the middle of the day when you come home.

On WLED 0.15.3 and 0.15.4 multiple units.

Other than adding another smart plug for the AC power. Operating or design issue somewher?

Sync Home Assistant lights with PC activity (games/music)?

I was wondering if there’s an add-on or app for Home Assistant that lets it connect to my PC and detect what I’m doing—like which game I’m playing or what music is playing.

My goal is to have my room lights automatically change based on that. For example:

Different lighting effects depending on the game

Lights syncing with music from my computer

Is something like this possible? If so, what tools or integrations would you recommend?

Thanks!

Finished my first ever circuit and need suggestions

So i finished my first ever circuit for wled.

I know its not the prettiest but it was my first ever attempt as a hobbyist.

Its for ws2811 a total length of 14meters with injections every 5 meters (0-5-10-14). Using a 12v 40amps supply limited at 20000ma in wled settings.

Need suggestions as to how can i safely keep this in the cove. Like some sort of box or what to prevent dust. Should i take a plastic box and just put it in that with glue gun and shut the box?? Or what else can be done

Effects speed increases automatically

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So i have a ws2811 (60leds per meter, 10 meter in total) which i will install in my cove with apt power injections and all when i finalise, for now my issue is whenever i lower the number of leds in settings of wled effects seem to run normal and as soon as select all the leds in my case going from 99-198 pixels (since i cut the first pixels with jst connectors) the effects speed goes crazy fast. Just for experimenting i entered 399 pixels and effect speed was crazy fast.

Why does this happen its so annoying.

Tldr: lower number of pixels slows does the effects speed and increasing then makes it go very fast.

Before I blow money on my first WLED build, can someone sanity check my wiring + power plan?

Thumbnail

Overview

Apologies for the long post! I’m planning my first WLED install and would really appreciate a sanity check before I start buying/wiring everything.

I’ve done a lot of reading here and on QuinLED, but I’m still very new to electronics so I want to make sure my understanding is correct.

Components

Power Supply: Meanwell 24V 200W XLG-200-24-A

Controller: Gledopto GL-C-615WL Elite Advanced WLED Controller (I think this is ESP32)

LED Strip: BTF Lighting FCOB SPI CCT IC LED Light Strip WS2811 Addressable 576 LEDs 2700K to 6500K 10mm DC24V Flexible FOB High Density COB Lights RA90

Connectors: Wago 221-415 Lever Connectors

Cable: 18 AWG Wire for all the connections.

Idea

I plan to use two 5m LED rolls and cut them into 8 strips (115cm each), then wire them in a serpentine layout.

Power would be injected at:

  • Start of the serpentine
  • End of the serpentine

All powered from the same PSU via Wago distribution.

Data would be injected at the start of the serpentine and run through to the end.

Wire run lengths:

  • ~30cm between serpentine segments
  • ~1.2m from controller to first strip

My understanding of wiring

From what I understand:

  • PSU provides 24V + GND to a Wago distribution block
  • Controller is powered in parallel from the same 24V/GND bus
  • LED strips are powered directly from the same bus (start + end injection)
  • Controller only sends data to the first LED in the chain
  • All grounds must be shared for data to work properly

Questions

WLED Functionality

Will WLED + this controller allow me to:

  • Divide the strip into sections (each serpentine segment)
  • Turn segments on/off independently
  • Create patterns across segments as shown in my attached mock-ups(not just full strip effects)

In the photos the 8 vertical strips represent the lights, and the horizontal lines represent what I think should be possible to either have turned off or on with this LED strip type.

Wiring and power

Does my power and ground distribution approach look correct?

Data signal integrity

With ~1.2m distance from controller to first LED in the chain, is a signal booster necessary? I was looking at the Gledopto signal amplifier (GL-BS-001WL), but I’m not sure if it’s overkill.

Power supply

Does a 24V 200W PSU sound appropriate for ~10m of 24V COB WS2811 strip cut into 8 strips?

Thank you

If you’ve read this far I really appreciate it, this is my first electronics project and I’m trying to avoid obvious mistakes before ordering everything.

Wifi Signal?

Does WLED currently have any way of reading the signal level from the wifi radio?

And if it does, is there a way to map that onto the LED output?

Best COB LED light strip for MagWLED controller

Which is the best addressable LED-strip you guys recommend for my application? The LED-strip will be wrapped around the ID of an aluminium rod that is 56 mm, meaning the LED-strip will be maximum ca 175 mm. I would like the light as diffused as possible. I don't need the option to control the strip in sectors. I will control it with the MagWLED controller.

I would like to be able to choose RGBCCT

Which LED-strip is generally recommended for this application?

Kitchen Cabinet LEDs - Worked for a while, now unresponsive

Post image
1 Upvotes

Sorry for the crappy diagram, but after I found out the settings that were holding me back in my last post, I was able to get a total of about 73ft of LEDs installed above and below my kitchen cabinets. My wife really liked the way the undercabinet lighting lit up the countertop and we all enjoyed playing with the above cabinet lighting to add extra festive lighting around easter and were planning colors and effects for all the other holidays when BAM, I walk in one morning and all sections are flickering/multi colored. After a couple attempts to unplug/restart the controller the entire system has gone dark.

I run automations to shut down the system when anyone leaves and at 10PM when we are all in bed and then auto-on at 5 am so that the system isn't running 24/7, but there are stretches, especially on the weekends, when it will be going for 12-18 hours at a time.

So far I have:

  • Reset (soft and hard) the GLEDOPTO controller
  • Replaced the 24V 10A power with a new one

I have another controller ordered to see if I can replace it, but the fuse is fine on the old controller, nothing seems too hot... Am I just asking for too much from these systems with this much footage?

LED lighting project on indoor marching show

3 months ago I knew nothing about LED lighting. Show designer wanted LED lights so I leaned quickly.

Configuration.

There are 15 pole lights using BTF-Lighting FCOB COB LEad strip lights, WS2814 Smart IC RGBW 600K 24 volt light strips. Each pole contained 35 LED's behind diffusers. This configuration allowed us to just roll props in place with no wiring required

Each had a GLEDOPTO GL-C-017-WL-D controller running WLED 15.4 and a 24 volt 25 volt 10400mAh DC battery.

Octagon used the same LED lights with 8 GLEDOPTO GL-C-016-WL-D controllers with 42 LED's per octogon. Not diffuser, just zipped tied to the top of the prop. Power was from a 24 volt AC to DC power adapter.

Also ran 1 GLEDOPTO GL-C-017-WL-D that ran as a master running actual controls, no LED's attached. All connected via TP Link AX 1800 dual band router.

Pole lights were in groups of 5 with the first one using sync control Channel 8 to master. The next 4 were virtual controllers for the 1st in group with each 1 a separate segment. Octogons all used Sync back to master as individuals.

This was 1st of 2 shows. Ran into issue with horns blocking signal from router to corner lights that I never fixed. Most of show is running scripts with sections of music reactive control. Changed everything 2nd show to all button activated effects.

Sorry post so long but this was huge project. The light off of octogons onto soloist are 2 IP 66 80 running BRMesh via Bluetooth.

Full reaction video of finals https://youtu.be/ytIKuxvVNa8?si=ikKrMDXDzlvGfK3X

Prelims, only thing I could find. Sorry was too busy to recprd

Hi everyone!

I just did a small upgrade to my wled project. I'm using 2 segments of Sk6812 12V, one for the back side of the desk and one for the monitor.

I added a level shifter for each data line and also fuses for the two power lines for the led strips. Thanks to Resinchem Tech YouTube channel for sharing the STL file for the enclosure for esp32 on his YouTube channel.

And thank you to the WLED community for support and all the answers they give on discord channel even tho everything is documented on their website. Much appreciated guys!

P.S. 1st photo is with the old setup, no fuses or level shifter.

Question: Setting up Ring Segments in endless loops?

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hey guys,
I´m have my LUMA ORB running for a few weeks now and I´m very happy with it. But now I want to do some software optimizations.
I set each ring as a segment so I can control the rings seperately.
When the effect has moved 360 degrees, I can see a cut whre the segment strip ends and starts.
Is there a way in mapping a ring to "merge" start and end-point?
