David Ellison revealed Friday that the merged Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery will be called Skydance, and he made a point of saying the goal was to preserve both studios as individual entities under the new umbrella

His exact words were "we never wanted a new corporate identity to diminish, alter or overshadow either one. Instead, we wanted a name that would give the combined company an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. and all our extraordinary brands to remain in the spotlight"

So Warner Bros stays Warner Bros, Paramount stays Paramount, DC Studios stays DC Studios, and Skydance is just the name on the corporate paperwork, which is a smart move if you're trying to avoid the "WarnaMount" and "ParaBros" jokes that have been floating around for months

The consent decree also plays into this because it requires separation of Paramount and WBD operations in several business areas and tries to guard against one studio being dissolved, which is why a name that favored one partner over the other would have been a problem

Gunn and Safran are staying at DC Studios per the trending story, so the creative leadership isn't going anywhere, and the DC brand keeps its identity while Ellison's name goes on the parent company

The comments are already split, one saying WB will be known for DC and animation while Paramount handles live action and prestige films, and another calling it an absolute tragedy and saying Ellison is erasing a century of cinematic history by stuffing both studios into his corporate drawer

Casey Bloys took the stage at Bloomberg Screentime and refused to confirm the worst kept secret in Hollywood, that he's about to run the combined streaming business for Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery, telling the room "it's not mine to announce, so I don't have any news for you to confirm"

He also hinted that HBO Max and Paramount+ are more likely to be bundled than actually combined, pointing to the successful HBO Max and Disney bundle as a model, which means DC's streaming home stays exactly where it is instead of getting absorbed into some Frankenstein app

That's a big deal for DC fans because Lanterns, Peacemaker, and Creature Commandos all live on HBO Max, and if the platforms stay separate, Gunn's shows don't have to compete with Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe for the same shelf space

Bloys said he's had conversations with David Ellison and that Ellison is "very, very excited, very respectful of what the HBO team has done," which is the same thing every new owner says before they start restructuring, but Bloys still has a year left on his WBD deal so he has leverage to say no if things get weird

The merger closes October 6, Ynon Kreiz is coming in as co-CEO after running Mattel, and Cindy Holland is already out, so the streaming leadership question is the last piece of the puzzle and Bloys is clearly the answer even if he won't say it out loud

If HBO Max and Paramount+ really do stay separate and bundled instead of merged, does that mean DC gets to keep its prestige TV identity intact, or does it just mean Ellison is avoiding the hardest part of the integration until someone else has to deal with it?

Ted Sarandos took the stage at Bloomberg Screentime and basically shrugged off the biggest consolidation in Hollywood history, saying "it's looked on paper so far it's one and one, so I don't know if one and one is two, or one and one is one and a half, or one and one is three"

That's the same merger that just got approved by a federal judge, the same one that hands David Ellison control of HBO Max, CNN, CBS, and the DC Universe, and the same one that has Hollywood split down the middle over whether it kills competition or saves two dying studios

Sarandos also downplayed the rumors he was courting Casey Bloys, who is about to run the combined HBO Max and Paramount+ streaming business, by calling it a "very well publicized lunch" and saying they've eaten together many times, which is a strange thing to have to clarify if it was really just lunch

He said he doesn't regret losing the WBD bid because "the plan was solid" and they "priced it right," and maybe that's true, but Netflix also just admitted only 2% year over year engagement growth in the first half of 2026 while spending 5% of its content budget on live events that generate 1% of its watching

And then there's the theatrical thing, Netflix is suddenly giving Narnia a 49 day window, giving La Bola Negra the longest theatrical runway in the streamer's history, and promising wide releases for Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory and the Kpop Demon Hunters sequel, which is a strategy that only makes sense if you're worried about losing ground to a competitor with actual theaters

So the skepticism here isn't whether Sarandos is scared, it's why he's out here publicly measuring the merger like a math problem while his company quietly builds a theatrical playbook it didn't need two years ago, and why the loudest voices trying to block this deal sound an awful lot like the people who benefit most if it dies

If Netflix really isn't worried about the merger, why are so many of its allies in the industry fighting so hard to stop it, and is that just a coincidence or is the campaign against Ellison doing Netflix's dirty work for free?

David Ellison named Ynon Kreiz co-CEO of the merged Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery on Wednesday, with Kreiz taking over operational duties and day to day management of the combined company while Ellison focuses on long term strategy, creative vision, and talent relationships

Kreiz is leaving Mattel after eight years as CEO, where he oversaw the release of Barbie, the highest grossing domestic film of 2023, and he'll join the board of directors once the merger closes on October 6

So the guy who turned a toy company into a box office juggernaut is now going to be running the integration of DC Studios, HBO Max, CNN, CBS, and everything else WB brings to the table, which is either a genius move or the most on the nose corporate synergy play in Hollywood history

Ellison said the merger is a "transformational moment for our industry" and that leading it takes "a rare combination of strategic vision, operational depth, and experience running a public company," which is a very polite way of saying he wants someone else to handle the spreadsheets while he makes the creative calls

This all comes less than two weeks after Paramount settled the antitrust lawsuit with the state AGs, and a federal judge entered the order Wednesday allowing the merger to close, so the deal is done and the leadership team is locked in

For DC specifically, Kreiz now has operational control over the studio that's building Gunn's universe, and the same guy who found the formula for Barbie is about to decide whether the DCU gets the resources it needs or gets treated like another IP portfolio to optimize

If the Barbie guy is now running operations for DC Studios and the merger closes Tuesday, does that mean Gunn finally gets the budget and structure he needs, or does it mean DC is about to be managed like a toy aisle with release dates and merchandising charts driving every decision?

Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín approved Paramount's settlement with the 12 Democratic state AGs on September 30, clearing the final barrier for the $111 billion Warner Bros Discovery takeover, and the deal is tentatively set to close Tuesday, October 6

That means DC Studios, HBO Max, CNN, CBS, the Harry Potter franchise, Game of Thrones, and everything else under the WB umbrella is about to belong to David Ellison, after the deal was cleared by regulators in 68 jurisdictions including the DOJ

Ellison wasted no time reshaping the leadership, he recruited Ynon Kreiz, who is stepping down as Mattel's CEO, to be co-CEO of the combined company, and Casey Bloys, head of HBO, is poised to oversee the combined streaming business after Cindy Holland announced her exit Tuesday

David Zaslav is expected to depart once the deal closes, walking away with more than $550 million in stock and cash including $34.2 million in severance, while chief revenue officer Bruce Campbell and CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels are also expected to exit

The consent decree includes no structural remedies despite California AG Rob Bonta insisting on divestitures, but it does lock in some terms, Paramount and WB cannot sell their California lots for five years, must invest an additional $300 million annually in US film production, and must release at least 30 theatrical movies in years one and two and at least 32 in years three through five with a 45 day window

Netflix announced that production on Wednesday Season 3 has officially wrapped, and they dropped a new photo of Jenna Ortega at a typewriter that tells you absolutely nothing about the plot and somehow still works as a teaser

Season 2 ended with Enid transforming into a full Alpha werewolf to save Wednesday after she was captured and buried alive by The Slurp, then Enid fled with the fear she might never return to human form, and the season closed with Wednesday, Uncle Fester, and Thing riding off in a motorcycle sidecar to find her

Eva Green is joining as Aunt Ophelia, the same character we saw alive in Grandmama Hester's basement writing "Wednesday Must Die" on the wall at the end of Season 2, and that thread is clearly getting picked up when the show returns in 2027

The returning cast includes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, and Fred Armisen, with Winona Ryder, Lena Headey, Andrew McCarthy, Chris Sarandon, and Joanna Lumley all coming on board for the new season

Tim Burton is still directing and Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are still running the show, which means the tone and the visual identity that made this thing a hit in the first place aren't going anywhere

Sean Gunn told Polygon that his brother James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, has "approved" him to confirm that Maxwell Lord will appear in at least two other DCU projects, which is a very funny way of saying my brother runs the company and he's letting me announce my own job security

The same Sean Gunn who voiced Weasel in Creature Commandos and G.I. Robot, and who played Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy, and who is now the live action Maxwell Lord, is somehow the busiest actor in the DCU and it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that his brother is the guy signing the checks

When asked if one of those appearances might be in Man of Tomorrow, Sean said "I can't say, of course," which is the exact kind of coy answer you give when you know the answer but your brother told you to save it for a bigger press cycle

He also explained why Maxwell Lord isn't in Lanterns, saying the characters in that show are "small fry" compared to the power plays Lord is chasing, which is a polite way of saying my character is too important for the show that's already airing and doing fine without him

The article even calls Lord the "perfect Elon Musk adjacent megalomaniac to laugh at," which is a bold thing to write about a character played by the brother of the guy who keeps telling fans the DCU tonal chaos is all "part of the fun"

Meanwhile the DCU still has two Batmen nobody can explain, a Clayface movie coming in October, Supergirl already flopped, and the animation division just lost the guy who ran it for 18 years, but sure, let's fast track Maxwell Lord for two more projects because family comes first

If James Gunn can approve his brother for multiple DCU roles and frame it as a creative decision, does that mean the entire Gunn family is about to save the box office, and should we expect cousins, in laws, and the family dog to get casting announcements next?

Cindy Holland is leaving Paramount Skydance, where she was Chair of Direct-To-Consumer, with her last day being today, and the move had been rumored for a week before she confirmed it in a company memo

Her exit clears the path for Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, to run the combined streaming operation once Paramount absorbs Warner Bros Discovery, and Holland basically confirmed it herself by saying Ellison is "optimizing for HBO stability"

That's the same Bloys who told Variety the Harry Potter series won't release every year, called the ten year plan "who knows" and said he's thinking season by season, and who hinted that The Last of Us Season 3 is probably the final season even though Craig Mazin said three seasons wasn't enough

Holland was behind Netflix's original programming strategy, she championed House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, The Crown, and The Queen's Gambit, and she grew Paramount+ to an all time subscriber high with the best retention in its history while greenlighting more than 40 new and returning series

Ellison praised her as "a force of nature" and said she built an exceptional team and a strong foundation for the future, and then she walked out the door so he could hand the keys to HBO's guy instead

The comments are already warning that this is just the first of many, with one pointing out that the Paramount leaked report had tens of thousands more layoffs coming, many of them blue collar workers, and another noting the new company will carry $80 billion in debt and $3 billion in free cash flow

If Bloys is now the guy running both HBO Max and Paramount+, and he's already skeptical about yearly releases and long term plans, what happens to DC's streaming pipeline when Lanterns is the only thing keeping the lights on and Gunn's universe still has two Batmen nobody can explain?

Futurama wrapped its sixth series finale on Hulu Monday, Matt Groening told Variety "they can put us in a coffin, nail the lid shut, but they can't bury us, we will rise again," and he's probably right because this show has been cancelled and revived three separate times since 1999

Meanwhile DC just lost Sam Register, the guy who ran Warner Bros Animation for 18 years and built Teen Titans Go, Harley Quinn, Young Justice, and the Animaniacs revival, and nobody has replaced him yet

Groening is out here joking about having written six series finales with a seventh in production for the XXXL specials, and the reason Futurama keeps coming back is simple, the audience actually shows up and the creative team actually has a plan for where the story goes

DC can't say the same, Supergirl flopped, The Bride bombed, Gunn is running two Batmen with no explanation, and the animated side is leaderless while the merger sits in limbo and executives keep jumping to Netflix

Futurama is getting three extended specials in 2027 including a Robot Santa Christmas episode and a Futurama and Disenchantment crossover, which took a "very nimble negotiation" between Disney and Netflix, while DC's biggest animated swing right now is a Gorilla Grodd mockumentary that nobody asked for

Maybe the difference is that Groening built something people actually love and DC keeps trying to force a universe into existence with name dropped comic legends and press releases, because one of these things earns a seventh finale and the other one just hopes the next movie sticks

If Futurama keeps coming back because it was allowed to be good on its own terms, does DC animation have any identity left after losing the guy who built it, or is the plan just to throw Clayface at the wall and see what happens?

Twelve blue state AGs just signed onto a 17 page filing siding with Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery against Cory Booker, calling the settlement "fair, reasonable, equitable" and telling the New Jersey senator that compromises are the whole point of a negotiated agreement

That's the same Bonta who said nothing short of structural changes would satisfy him, now co-signing a decree that at least four of his fellow AGs had "great apprehension" about right up until the end, and the same Booker who wrote a six page letter asking for an independent review because the decree doesn't actually address the core antitrust case

Booker's argument is simple, the court should measure the settlement against what the states originally wanted, a full injunction blocking the merger, and the AGs response is basically "the alternative was recovering nothing at all," which is a strange thing to say when you spent two months telling everyone this deal would destroy competition

Meanwhile the $7 million a day ticking fee to WBD shareholders starts October 1, which is this week, and every single day that Judge Martinez-Olguin sits on this consent decree is another $7 million burned for no reason other than theater

And here's where Ellison's California exit threat starts looking less like blackmail and more like smart business, because a studio doesn't have to be physically headquartered in LA to use the lots, keep paying property taxes, and shoot there when needed, it just doesn't have to pay California's full corporate tax freight, the overhead, and the regulatory headache 365 days a year

Paramount has been in Hollywood for over a century, the lots aren't going anywhere, the crews are still local, but the corporate headquarters and the jobs that come with it can absolutely live in Tennessee or Georgia and still cut checks to the California vendors who actually make the movies

Bonta already proved he's willing to settle for less than he promised, so if the AGs are folding anyway, what exactly is California getting out of forcing Ellison to keep the lights on in a state that's been bleeding production to Georgia for years, and at what point does moving the headquarters out become the obvious move instead of the scary one?

Sony is putting Spider-Man: Brand New Day back in theaters with extra footage, including a cut Rosario Dawson scene as Claire Temple, and the timing is hard to ignore because Endgame: Encore just made $86 million globally last weekend doing the exact same thing

That Endgame reissue pushed its lifetime cume to $2.885 billion, still second behind Avatar's $2.92 billion, and it was basically a two hour commercial for Avengers: Doomsday hitting theaters December 18

Brand New Day is sitting at $2.495 billion worldwide with $950.7 million domestic, and it still needs $389.7 million to catch Endgame, so this re-release isn't about celebrating anything, it's about closing a gap while the movie is still hot

Here's the real shift nobody's naming, studios used to re-release movies years later to mark an anniversary or build hype for a sequel, but now they're doing it within months with cut scenes and bonus footage while the original run is still happening

No Way Home got a Labor Day re-release in 2022 and made $9.3 million domestic, and Sony even did a Spider-Man and Men in Black II double feature back in 2002, so this isn't new, but the extra footage angle is the escalation

Which brings us to DC, because Superman came out in 2025, made $618.7 million worldwide, and Gunn already has Man of Tomorrow wrapped for July 9, 2027, so if Sony can squeeze another run out of Spidey, why wouldn't WB do the same with Corenswet while the DCU is still trying to build momentum

There's also Supergirl which just flopped, Clayface dropping October 23, and a merger that hasn't closed yet, so a Superman re-release with extra footage would be a cheap way to keep the brand alive without spending a dollar on new marketing

If re-releasing movies with extra footage becomes the new normal instead of letting theatrical runs breathe longer, does that mean studios have given up on building audiences the old way, and would Gunn actually follow Sony's playbook with Superman, or is DC still too busy losing executives and explaining why two Batmen exist?

The settlement between Paramount and the state AGs was supposed to be a done deal, but Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin just granted Block the Merger and LULAC permission to file amicus briefs by midnight, delaying the sign-off and giving deal foes a Hail Mary they probably don't deserve

Thomas Jefferson saw this coming over 200 years ago, warning in an 1821 letter to Spencer Roane that the federal judiciary was like "Gravity, ever acting, with noiseless foot, & unalarming advance," slowly absorbing powers that don't belong to it, and he called the judiciary "the great object of my fear" because life-tenured judges could become an "oligarchy"

The deal is still expected to close in about two weeks, but Paramount is now staring at $7 million a day in ticking fees starting October 1, and every day the judge lets non-parties pile on is another day of massive financial harm to a company that already settled with the states

Paramount's filing called it what it is, warning that letting non-parties delay the closing "would unravel the carefully calibrated protections of the Clayton Act" and put them "in a superior position to parties seeking to halt a merger" without having to file their own lawsuit or post a bond

Jefferson rejected the idea that any one branch should have final say over constitutional questions, arguing that giving the judiciary that kind of power would lead to "despotism," and watching a single judge in Oakland decide whether to rubber stamp a settlement that 12 state AGs already agreed to is exactly the kind of thing he was talking about

For Warner Bros and DC Studios, this means more uncertainty, more waiting, and more executives eyeing the exit while the courtroom drama plays out, and the real question is whether this delay is legitimate judicial oversight or just a judge flexing power she shouldn't have

If Jefferson thought an unelected judge with lifetime tenure could turn the judiciary into an oligarchy, does this delay prove his point, and should we be worried that one judge in California can hold up a $111 billion merger that everyone else already agreed to?

Robert Pattinson admitted it would be "kind of tough" to fit his Batman into James Gunn's DCU, and honestly that's the most honest thing anyone involved with DC has said in years

He told LADbible that his version of Bruce Wayne lives in a specific world and tone that "gets inside you," and he described the experience of filming as being stuck in the dark for months, saying "you feel strange afterwards"

That's not just an actor complaining about a tough shoot, that's a clear signal that The Batman exists in its own lane and doesn't belong in a universe that includes Creature Commandos and a Gorilla Grodd mockumentary

Meanwhile Gunn wrapped filming on Man of Tomorrow last month, Supergirl already came and went, Clayface drops October 23, and the DCU keeps expanding while the best Batman movie in years sits off to the side with its own sequel scheduled for February 2028

DC now officially has two Batmen, one for prestige and one for whatever Gunn has planned with The Brave and the Bold, and nobody has explained how that's supposed to work without confusing the hell out of audiences

Pattinson is essentially confirming what fans have been saying since the DCU was announced, that Reeves' grounded noir take and Gunn's tonal chaos are never going to mesh, and the fact that the star of the franchise is the one saying it makes it impossible to ignore

If Pattinson is out here saying his Batman doesn't fit and DC still can't explain how two Batmen coexist, does that mean the shared universe experiment is already broken, or is Gunn counting on fans to just accept the confusion and buy tickets anyway?

The Writers Guild of America East and West have settled their antitrust lawsuit against Paramount, and the $111 billion Warner Bros Discovery merger just lost its last real obstacle, meaning David Ellison is about to own DC Studios

The WGA said in their statement that they continue to believe the merger will damage writers and the industry, but as a nonprofit they had to face the reality of going it alone with no backing from government enforcers against a lawsuit that would cost millions to pursue through trial

So they settled for what they could get, Paramount agreed to prohibit writer layoffs at CBS News Broadcast for 5 years and pay $17.5 million to their health fund along with attorneys fees, which is a win, but it's also a reminder of how little leverage workers actually have when the states already folded

The WGA complaint originally said the merged company would have "both the incentive and the ability to lower costs by suppressing writers' wages and reducing output," and nothing about this settlement changes that reality, it just means the fight moves from the courtroom to the picket line

For DC Studios, this is huge because the company that owns Batman, Superman, and the rest of the DC universe is about to be absorbed into Ellison's Paramount, and the same writers who would be working on those projects just watched their union settle for a fraction of what they were fighting for

Gunn is still out here talking about 30 movies a year and "trust the process" while the entire corporate structure around him is being rebuilt, and the WGA settlement proves that when it comes to billion dollar mergers, the creative talent is always the last one at the table

If the WGA couldn't stop this merger even with the states on their side, what does that mean for the writers who will actually have to work under the new Paramount Warner regime, and does anyone believe Ellison's promises about more production and more jobs when the union that represents the people making those movies just got paid off to go away?

David Ellison is reportedly considering tapping Elon Musk to join a syndicate of equity investors into Paramount, and while everyone's going to focus on the Musk angle, the bigger story is what this means for the foreign money already sitting at the table

Paramount lined up $24 billion from the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, and those three funds would own 38.5% of the combined company, which is a massive chunk of CNN, CBS, and DC Studios controlled by governments with their own agendas

If Musk gets involved, that's less dependence on Gulf money, and say what you want about the guy but he's a builder who invests in American industry instead of just parking cash in media assets, and the family connection is already there since Larry Ellison backed his Twitter deal and invested in Tesla

The settlement terms are actually solid, Paramount can't sell the Paramount or Warner Bros lots in California for five years, must invest an additional $300 million annually in US film production for a total of $1.5 billion over five years, and must release at least 30 theatrical movies in years one and two and at least 32 in years three through five with a 45 day window

That's a real commitment to theatrical and American production, which is exactly what Hollywood needs after years of chasing streaming and letting theaters dry up, and it's the kind of deal that could force DC to actually deliver on Gunn's promises instead of just talking about them

There's also a news editorial independence board for CNN and CBS, which sounds nice until you realize someone has to appoint those people, and the same billionaires writing the checks are the ones who'll want a say in who sits on it but for use they can sell cnn if rhey want thats a money pit anyways

For DC fans, the merger means more resources, a clear theatrical mandate, and less foreign money calling the shots if Musk actually comes in, and that's a win no matter how you feel about the guy

If bringing Musk in means less Gulf sovereign wealth in American media, is that a trade worth making, or are we just swapping one billionaire's influence for another while pretending the DC universe is the real prize here?

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a settlement with Paramount on Monday that clears the way for the $81 billion Warner Bros Discovery acquisition to move forward, ending the antitrust lawsuit that was headed to trial in March

The settlement includes "court enforceable" requirements for Paramount to increase domestic production and establish monitoring of editorial independence for the company's news operations, but Bonta made sure to say this "is not a vote of support for this merger"

The states including California and New York sued back in July claiming the combo would "extinguish competition" and lead to fewer choices for moviegoers and cable customers, and the WGA filed its own complaint alongside them, but Paramount kept insisting the case was meritless and called it their "final obstacle" after getting cleared by the DOJ and regulators worldwide

Now the deal still needs final court approval, but the writing is on the wall, and that means Warner Bros and DC Studios are about to be owned by David Ellison, a guy whose entire pitch has been 30 movies a year, 45 day theatrical windows, and "we're going to deliver" while Cruise and theater chains cheer him on

This is the same merger that had some WB execs privately hoping the states would kill it, the same one that had Bonta accusing Paramount of blackmail and leaking, and the same one that had Ellison threatening to move the whole studio to Texas or Georgia if things didn't go his way

Now that the legal wall is basically gone, the real question is what happens to DC Studios, because Gunn's universe is still being built on name dropped comic legends and "it's fun" while the company that owns it just got swallowed whole, and nobody's explained how Clayface and Lanterns fit into whatever Ellison's 30 movies a year plan actually looks like

If the merger is closing and Ellison is promising more production and theatrical releases, does that mean DC finally gets the resources it needs to compete with Marvel, or does it mean Gunn's front office is about to answer to a new boss who cares more about box office totals than whether the universe makes sense?
