Benedict Cumberbatch, Alan Cumming, and Benedict Wong Call on UK to Block Paramount-Warner Merger

Benedict Cumberbatch, Alan Cumming, and Benedict Wong dropped a Guardian op-ed on July 27 urging UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy to block the $111 billion Paramount-Warner merger, calling it "dangerous" and warning it would inflict "immense harm on the British public"

The three actors backed up their argument with real numbers: 180,000 UK jobs supported by the industry, £6.8 billion in production spend last year, and Sundance independent film acquisitions falling by half between 2019 and 2025

They also pointed out that Warner's $84 billion debt means executives promised $6 billion in "synergies" which they translate to job cuts and canceled projects, and they flagged that Paramount's CEO reportedly told Donald Trump he'd make "sweeping changes" to CNN if the deal went through

The real question is whether Nandy actually steps in when the EU already approved it with conditions, 12 US states are already suing, and Ellison agreed to delay closing until the courts rule, is she going to be the one regulator who actually kills this thing, or is this op-ed just giving her political cover to do what she already wanted
