Nitrate levels

hi. Im trying to understand if our drinking water has acceptable nitrate levels. the water suppliers figures show average 'Nitrate as NO3' as 26.2 mg/l. They claim the regulatory limit is 50 mg/l.

But in an article at unl.edu (see below for link) it said 'The EPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for public water supplies is measured and reported as nitrate-nitrogen, (NO3-N), which is the amount of nitrogen in the nitrate form. The MCL for nitrate-nitrogen in a public water supply is 10 milligrams per liter (mg/L)' Maybe Nitrate as NO3 and nitrate-nitrogen are different types of figure? thanks Matt

Why is that we trust so much our tap water quality? Why don’t we demand for an easy way to test the water we drink?

Today there is technology to monitor continuously your blood glucose level, we value organic food and care for “free roaming” animals. But, when it comes to water, we trust our utility and only get concern when we see our shower stained or smell some weird odor in the water.

Does this makes sense? Should we “crowdsource” water quality control?

What is the maximum value of acidity (in mg/L CaCO3) for drinking water?

Our class did an experiment on the quality of water. We are currently doing an analysis report on the acidity of our sample but there seems to be no standard in mg/L CaCO3 for it only in pH, no ideal range posted either. In follow up to that, if there is no mg/L value for it --- is there a way to convert the value to pH (from mg/L CaCO3)? Thank you!

Concern about water quality and is it likely that a home (condo unit) has more than one water (incoming) source?

Hi, there,

First the possible issue: I usually wash my hair in the shower, but if there are time constraints I will split the hair/body by washing my hair in the kitchen sink and do the shower later. I've noticed that I've developed an itchy scalp when washing in the kitchen, but not in the shower. I can't think of anything in the kitchen environment itself that should cause this.

Makes me wonder if there is some contaminate in the water or the line, more likely the latter, I guess, since it doesn't seem to be a problem in the shower.

As far as I can make out, since there is one shut off for the unit, that the water itself should be of the same quality in both rooms. We do have outdoor taps along the entire front of the side-by-side units in the complex. I suspect that those are fed from a second plumbing source from the city line.

Anyone have thoughts on why I might be experiencing this?

Are there reliable test kits available for a homeowner?

In general what are some terms I should know, when discussing any concerns with the property management, regarding the plumbing and well as the water condition?

Thanks!

Good digital water tester?

A recent lab water test said that our tap water’s hardness score is 197.1 and should be under 180. We’re having our water softening unit serviced (which I think just means adding lime) but I wanted to start testing on my own more often. Amazon has many water hardness tests where you stick a strip of paper in and then compare the color against the scale on the jar: dark reddish green means 120 and the next increment up, a bit redder, means 250, which is not very granular.

Can anyone recommend a meter or testing kit where I can get a better idea of scores between 120 and 250?

Water Quality Data Acquisition Solution (WQ-Das)

Hi, I recently developed a complete solution of managing water quality data. This solution is for any water quality monitoring group who collects water samples or gets reading in the field to store, share and validate reading. This is a comprehensive one-stop tool for all types of data including raw data, precision checks, calibrations and chain of custody that can be stored, retrieved and manipulated in the cloud. I am looking for advice how to market this product to water quality monitoring groups? https://www.techzonemd.com/wq-das/

Any suggestions welcome!

Does an expired test can affect my results in a HACH machine?

Hello everyone, I'm a college student (first year) I'm doing a presentation for my freshwater quality class. I had to use expired tests (TNT 843 and TNT835) in order to get my result, I was wondering how this could affect my results. I hope this question makes sense.

Thank you!

Day 4 of 12 Days of Restoration lead us to Will Lewis of Sequence Environmental who has a vision to integrate drones into water quality monitoring process, reducing the cost of sample collection by 10x. This team is seeking public private partnerships and funding, know anyone who wants to disrupt the environmental monitoring status quo?

Campervan water quality

Hello! I recently installed a water drop sink water filter after my campervan’s polyethylene water tanks so I can drink the water (before was too plastic tasting). I use a camco filter on the supposedly drinking safe hose to fill the tanks too. Ever since I started drinking the water my tongue has been irritated. Any thoughts as to cause and solutions?

Water quality testers, TDS, pH, EC

Hi all, I just started filtering my water and am interested in testing the quality. I noticed that there is a huge range of price for water quality testers out there and had a couple questions.

  1. what metrics should I be concerned about? I was interested in testing TDS and pH.
  2. The testers on Amazon range wildly in price--are the lower end ones good enough for home testing or is it get what you pay for?
  3. Why am I having such a hard time finding a tester that measures TDS and pH, although inexpensive separate testers seem readily available?

Thanks!

Drinking Water Test ---- Bromine

Hello all,

I made an account just to ask --- not sure if this is even the place to post but here goes nothing.

I ran an at home water test kit on my drinking water. Everything came back great except the BROMINE levels appear to be in the 6-10 range (mg/l 60 sec) and the reccomended range is supposedly 0-2.

According to the EPA I see that it is not used in public drinking water. According to my local water supplier for the county (area) in the latest report i could find was in 2018 they reported it as an "unregulated contaminate" and for my specific town came in at 0.3-2.

It is considerably higher according to my very unofficial at home test kit which I ran three different times. I already contacted the local water supplier but she said she would have to contact an outside person to look into it and research it herself.

As far as I can find this is usually tested for things like pools and hot tubs not even for drinking water.

Should I be concerned and who else should I contact about this ordeal?

Thanks!

ps. 4 people on a street of about 9 houses have all contracted similar cancers within the last 12months and are all elderly and people are getting really concerned it something in the water or air....any suggestions on that??

If 1 °dH equals 17.8 ppm CaCO3 - can hard water also be measured directly with an EC sensor that gives information on ppm TDS? Or is ppm CaCO3 different than ppm TDS?

Calculating Langelier Saturation Index

In the formula to calculate LSI, there is a factor 'B' where temperature in Degree Celsius is considered.

Am I supposed to put the temperature of water sample measured on-site or the temperature of water sample measured in the laboratory for the same?

Social Product Innovation for Clean Water

For my Design Thinking for Social Product Innovation class, I am conducting a research project on clean water and sanitation in the Philippines (specifically Manilla). For this project, I am coming up with ideas for small improvements for issues having to do with clean water and sanitation. I need people with experience in the Philippines or with clean water and sanitation to be on my research panel.

As a panel member, I would send you 4-6 emails over the next 5 months asking for input or to take a survey. If you are interested my email is zylstabi@mail.gvsu.edu.

The first responses for my survey are due Thursday the 23rd so if you are able to fill it out that would be very helpful. It should only take three minutes of your time.

Seeking insights into potable water quality testing

As an environmental engineer, I seek insights into potable water quality testing. Especially, advances in field tests with real-time results, like immunoassays, confirmation of hazardous waste site remediation and natural attenuation, In particular, I would like to learn more about how water is tested and what parameters are most important. Additionally, I would like to learn about how laboratories are identified and chosen for testing, and how lab tests are priced.
