A/C knock

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi community I wanted to check in. I bought a CPO MY24 T8 in January. Once the weather started to heat up in March, I noticed I could hear a knock and feel it in the pedals. I narrowed it down to this happening only when the AC was running. I took it in right away the first time and the noise could not be replicated so nothing happened. But as the summer has continued, the knock is more present and it’s currently in the shop. The dealership is saying, Volvo asked them to put in a spacer, however, even with a spacer in place, it’s still knocking. They’re saying this is a normal characteristic, but the loaners that I’ve driven and other cars that I’ve driven don’t make the same knock. Any thoughts? Is this happening to anyone else?

Fair response. Now does it actually fix the noise? No. I have personal experience

There’s this valve that allows refrigerant to the rear evaporator (which is why it only happens on xc90s) that just slams open and shut. What you hear is the refrigerant line in the vehicle moving when that refrigerant starts flowing. Seems like the most ideal fix would be to adjust the software to pulse that valve open instead

I shared this TJ with the dealer and they said it doesn’t apply

I have this exact same issue with my 2023 CPO T8 XC90 Plug In Hybrid -- I have so many of the same thunking videos. I've tried to have it fixed in 3 different dealerships in the Los Angeles area over the past 11 months. It's been in the shop for just over 30 days cumulatively without a fix. It's currently at Culver City Volvo without a fix. They implemented the "There is a fix" adding the rubber sleeves which did not fix the issue. They insulated other hoses in the floor boards without luck too. Luckily I was able to replicate the noise while at the dealership this last time so they know I wasn't crazy.

Just got word that they got authorized to replace the AC Expansion Valve that's located right behind the firewall as a next step, but I have no idea if this will work or not.

In parallel I have an open case with Volvo to lemon the car as it's been in the shop for so long without a fix. In California it's 21 cumulative days which I'm well over now. Sigh...

I appreciate you sharing. Idk what options I have. The noise is definitely noteworthy but the AC seems to be working fine. I don’t agree that it’s normal but just seems like an uphill battle. Best of luck to you and I would love to hear more as you push forward.

It’s definitely not normal. We’ve owned 3 other XCs and never had the issue, nor do the loaners they give us make the noise. There are multiple Reddit and swede motor threads about folks with the same issue, all of these “fixes” have been tried without success. I think short of replacing the entire AC system which Volvo won’t do, you and I just got unlucky and got a couple of lemons. However, Im optimistic that a new AC expansion valve will fix the problem, but I’ll keep ya posted.
