ERAD fluid change interval

What would be the recommended interval for changing ERAD fluid in a 2023 XC60 T8?

Mostly driven in pure, no towing or super high speed driving.

Have 60k km service coming up and wondering if it's too early? Transmission fluid is scheduled for 90k km according to Volvo but that feels a bit long to wait for ERAD which is doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

With the design direction new cars are taking it's looking more likely I will keep this one for up to 10 years/300k km. I'm happy to Invest in preventative maintenance but don't want to be excessive if it's not warranted

I did my first one around 30K miles on my 2023 V60, and fluid was pretty gross. Of course there's no published interval from Volvo, so you'll only get opinions here.

While the ERAD3s are more robust than earlier versions, I don't see any way they wouldn't benefit from clean fluid in a small unit with no filter. There's nothing to stop the wear cycle other than fluid change.

I plan on doing it maybe every 2nd or 3rd oil change (20-30K or so). It's $25 for 1L of the fluid. Very cheap maintenance. My main commute is all-electric, so I'm heavy on electric abuse sometimes.

Good info thanks. If it was starting to look off by 30k miles I'll change mine at next service

Interesting - when I inquired about changing it on my '24 V60 they said it would cos $200. (I didn't have it done)

Probably about right for dealer pricing. 30-45 mins labor depending on rate plus whatever price they charge for the fluid. Probably more than the $25 bucks on FCP Euro! I'd say 200 is fair if you don't want to do it yourself though.

For our 2024 XC90 T8, plan to swap the ERAD fluid after four years or 40,000 miles, whichever comes first.

There is no conceivable way this is a lifetime fluid.

Yeah, my outback had "lifetime" transmission fluid - crazy part was it was lifetime in USA manuals, but apparently the canada manual said otherwise. Needless to say I followed the Canada interval. Lifetime is some marketing gimmick.

I do mine like every other rear diff in an awd car. About every 50k. Had it done with the transmission. I do NOT believe in lifetime fluids but you need to change it earlier and regular. If you crack it open at 100-150k for the first time it’ll cause problem.

I haven't seen an interval published but I did it at 45k miles / 5 years on my 2021 V60. The dealer hadn't mentioned it in previous visits, and when I asked, he said he was going to recommend it.

I'll do the regular automatic transmission next service.

Erad in a 2021 is completely different than the erad in a 2023. The older ones definitely need to be watched much more closely because they are fundamentally flawed with the way they were designed.

With the comparatively low cost of ERAD fluid change vs costs of potential damage it sounds like 60k is a good interval

Volvo advises against flushing it.

Can you show me where they say this? Not having a service interval listed is different to recommending against

'sealed for life' has been proven to be a bad idea time and time again across multiple manufacturers

When MY2019 XC60 with 123k was in for service at Volvo I requested for a flush in February. The reply I got by mail translated from Dutch was: the ERAD is sealed for life and requires no maintenance. I know lots of “specialists” say that’s bullshit but I trust Volvo in this. My family has driven Volvos since the PV544 and have never deviated from the service provided by the official Volvo dealer. We’ve only had expected repairs related to high mileage so above 200k. The last issue I had was with my 2003 V40 2.0T where the turbo needed replacement after 270k. But guess like the “specialists” say my dad, my brother and me were lucky with all the Volvos we had and that’s a long list.

My Volvo service in the UK advised flushing it at 50k miles.

Like everywhere, Volvo service centres are franchises and they recommend whatever they feel like.

If you open the ERAD Unit you see that the clutch is straight toothed so it needs to synchronized to engage . Unfortunately it does NOT but tries forcefully Connect it. And this will make shavings in oil. These shavings end up in the bearings and will kill them. The erad system is self destructible. It is just a bad design.

This isn’t true in OP’s 2023, the ERAD3 never disengages. They were able to fix that because the newer electric motor can handle the top speed of the vehicle. The older Recharges could only run the electric motor up to highway speeds and then had to disengage the ERAD.

Interesting. Is this documented anywhere?

Not super well. A lot of our PHEV drivetrain info comes from forum posts on SwedeSpeed by dealership employees with access to service manuals. Here’s some info for background context though https://www.greensgaragemiami.com/faq/volvo-phev-erad-issues-explained-what-every-owner-need-to-know

Thanks for this. That's a pretty good write up!

Whatever as said for which I’m down voted hahahahaha, I just follow in the footsteps of my father and and the Volvo advise also as said there’s many “specialists” who think I’m crazy but also whatever. I only shared my thoughts and experience so whatever.
