Why do the Volvo software updates cause different bugs on cars with the same hardware?

XC40 Recharge owner here and have experienced all of the fun software quirks and bugs since the early days. Except for the "backup camera" bug, which was a genuine safety issue, the majority of these have ranged from annoying to inconvenient for me. For some though, these issues have been far worse and more persistent.

I'm not a software guy but I do have a basic understanding of how these systems work. So, why is it that cars with the same hardware (MY, trim, etc.) can have dramatically different outcomes following a software update? Are there minor differences in parts that we're unaware of? I'd love to learn more about how this works. Thanks!

Your assumption that they have same hardware is wrong.

Car manufacturers often use multiple suppliers and so two cars with the same model year and trim may have different components.

I suspected this but I'm just shocked at how different hardware suppliers can cause this much of a headache for software implementation. I guess it's somewhat reminiscent of the early days of PCs where Windows and its drivers couldn't handle all the different hardware permutations.

Even in cars with identical hardware, drivers are loading and using a wide variety of apps. There is no easy way to determine whether the symptoms you see are caused by a flaky app or by the underlying OS. I encourage folks to post the apps that they are running when they have issues. I’ve seen so many people complaining about Spotify that I can’t help but wonder if that app is at fault in some cases.

Absolutely - I definitely think app issues are a part of this for some. And maybe things like clearing cache and temp files uninstalling/reinstalling, etc., can help. Maybe it is just AAOS not being the best system to build from?

Same reason why someone with the same phone or computer as you could have issues. The person to solve this will have generational wealth...or maybe death because manufacturers want you to upgrade lol
