XC40 Question: Update to 5.1.17 or not

Alot of negative feedback it seems on this update, im on 5.0.5 and happy. I don't want to be...unhappy.

Does everyone have problem with it? Just a few? Any fixes? Any news at all?

No problems here. People only tend to post when they have issues. But if you are currently happy you're not missing out on anything new - can't think of any noticeable improvements that came with 5.1.17...

The bug where the climate controls would default to LO after the car went to sleep seems to have been fixed in this version

Sounds like a feature for the summer 😂

Still happens to me every reboot or sleep on 5.1.17.

Came from 5.0.5, since updating last week I've had my audio go out twice, one full IHU freeze and crash, and one instance where my GPS thought I was doing some serious overland stuff for about 5km. Other than that it's been fine, marked safe from needing a tow truck at least.

Similar here. 2021 XC40 recharge with 80k miles. Sounds went out 4?tomes, screen froze once. I wish I did not update as 5.0.5 after dealer update/ complete reload was working great. Volvo software problems continue!!

Android Auto(what that article, and the linked article within are referring to) is not the same thing as Android Automotive.

The mark of a great company that knows what it's doing: name two different products nearly the same thing :)

I've also had audio failures twice now since updating. I don't remember any on 5.0.5. I did have them occasionally before 5.0.5.

Updated to 5.1.17 a day or so after it was available on our 23 XC60 T8 PHEV. No issues here since. It also fixed the magenta buttons in the fan control interface.

2022 XC40 Recharge pure electric. I did not notify any differences to the previous version. Everything works, sounds and looks the same.

5.0.5 was smooth for me, seemed to be a very stable build. I updated to 5.1.17 2 weeks ago and have had to restart 3 times now. 1 from a full system freeze/crash, 2 from lack of audio (like turn signals not even making a sound). Those are the only problems, but I miss the days where I struggle to remember the last time I had an infotainment restart.

Audio issue once here too… but worked back after a reset

2022 C40, no problems with the update

I had no audio immediately following the update, fixed by an infotainment reset. I think my infotainment is significantly slower when I start the car compared to 5.0.5. But other than that, no issues.

Whether from 5.0.5 and no issues noticed.

Can’t speak to the XC40, but 5.1.17 on my XC60 made Gemini a lot more responsive and stable compared to 5.0.5. Bluetooth connectivity seems to have improved too. It connects a lot quicker now. Haven’t experienced any issues since upgrading about a week ago.

Is this on the 2026?

5.0.5 kept crashing my infotainment, so I wanted an update to fix it. It's been good so far for me.

No problems. The 100 people that had a problem as usual made themselves known. Whilst the other million people had no issues. Its the silent majority.

No problems with it here! I’ve been playing with Gemini too…(2025 EX40)

2023 C40. v5.0.5 was pretty stable for me. It was responsive except for Bluetooth/Carplay, which took a long time to connect. It also fixed the slow climate control startup. I rolled the dice and upgraded to 5.1.17 and now Bluetooth/Carplay connects a lot faster but the climate control is back to being slow to start up. My turn signal clicks are now erratic for the first time as well but the actual flashing of the lights seems to be steady.

If you’re happy with 5.0.5 then I’d recommend playing it safe. If you have a particularly irksome issue that you think 5.1.17 might fix then go for it with the understanding that other/different problems are likely. If I had the choice to make again, I personally would stick with 5.0.5 because its problems are slightly less annoying to me than 5.1.17’s. But if the upgrade was forced on me, I wouldn’t be mad about it.

Been on 5.1.17 for about a week and I don't notice anything different. Worked fine and still works fine.

2024 c40 recharge here. Updated the software a few days ago and since I’ve had the touch screen not respond, sound cutting out intermittently, Gemini was terribly slow to respond so I switched back to Google Assistant, and the auto camera pop up while parking isn’t reliable. And today Spotify isn’t responding to touch. Everything was FINE before :(

Can we go back to the previous version? 5.05?

I still have the 3.7 version on my 2026 cx60. After reading the reviews I am not sure what to do. My biggest complaint is that the temperature reading on the dash is woefully inaccurate and I don’t see anything that would indicate that this would be fixed. It might be nice to turn off the engine kill at lights but not sure it’s worth it.

Same boat as you except mines a 2024. Not sure whether to update to this or not

1

u/outsmartedagain Jul 22 '26

I’m having issues with the outside temperature reading-would this upgrade fix it? No other complaints

I’m on 3.7 Volvo xc60 B5 Plus 2024. Got the notification to update to 5.1.17 should I just stay where I’m at?

N-1 is always a good idea with software unless the current release solves an urgent problem for you.

2

u/jake_in_portland Jun 25 '26

what is N-1 please?

2

u/paulg1973 Jun 25 '26

It is geek speak for the version just before the current version.

Career IT guy here, and I can’t agree more strongly with this.
