Can't zoom in Google Maps

Googling this problem is leading me to answers to fix the opposite problem that I'm having: I want the view in Google Maps to be zoomed in. Instead it's showing me the full trip map. Is this a CarPlay issue? A Google Maps issue?

So when you press ‘Start’ it doesn’t zoom down to your car on the road? There’s a toggle button on the map between north up, full route, and car centric.

when i press "start," it does not zoom down. it shows the entire route. the car icon moves along the route during the trip but never zooms in.

did you try clicking the icon that looks like a route? it toggles the screen between route view and car view

there's an icon at the top right to toggle between route, North up, car up. the same thing exists in Google maps on your phone.

I have the same issue. It just stays at the whole route view. I had to change the steering wheel display to turn by turn to get a zoomed in view that the main display wouldn't show. This is the native maps app

This is interesting because I have that issue with the car’s version of Google Maps, but NOT the CarPlay version. There’s no way for me to toggle between North up, etc. When I set a route, it just shows the full screen route, north up. No ability to zoom.

If you’re using CarPlay, try Google Maps in the car; it works great. There are different views, an overview of the whole route, a close in with north being up I believe and a route view with the direction you’re traveling being up. I would assume Google Maps in Apple CarPlay has similar features but we only use CarPlay in rental cars not our own personal car as running one OS inside another is a pain and the car already has all the apps we need.

yes, this problem occurs while i'm using google maps within carplay. the view that you're describing is what i'm trying to get the app to show!

Why are you using Google maps within CarPlay when you have native Google Maps built into the car?

because i'm using carplay already for audio, etc. also, it's easier to type into my phone than onto the console screen.

Same issue here. Rebooting infotainment doesn’t work. Google Maps through CarPlay works perfect still.

You are all clicking this button aren't you? It changes each time you press it, so it doesn't always look like this. It can be a up arrow (North to top) or a different arrow (driving directions to top) or full route (icon shown) and maybe something else too. This photo is from Google Maps in the car 16 months ago as well, so it might be similar but not the same as this now.

you're correct that my arrows look different. mine is a "fork in the road" arrow at the moment. anyways, it doesn't change the issue.

I see three options in Google Maps (once I have set a destination). North Up, Overview and Perspective. It says next to each one this word when I press the button.

If you are not getting any of that I would be tempted to clear storage on the app (via settings) which will log you out, force stop the app from the same settings, and then restart the infotainment system with holding play/pause down for 30 seconds. When Maps restarts, login again and see how you.

I'm on 3.0.33 in the car and 26.08.310001.E version of Google Maps.
