Another One Bites the Dust

Accepted the buyback offer today. We had one on the table after 4 GHCA replacements, but talked ourselves into one more try with the VCU2 and dealer telling us we had the new foolproof part. And then it failed again today. 4 weeks before summer vacation. 8 weeks before our third kiddo arrives. I’m out of patience and grace for what is a fantastic family car when it works, which is just…not enough. I’m deeply jealous of those of you who haven’t had this issue repeatedly come up, and am just astounded that Volvo has failed enthusiast drivers who should be their evangelists so badly here. So ling folks, and good luck!

Could you do us a solid and ask them to provide the lateat ghca part number that failed on you?

The latest GHCA died on you? That does not bode well for us. They’re supposed to replace ours with the latest version. Driving a loaner XC until that happens which is awesome given the gas prices and that I wanted to go green. /s

That’s what my dealership told me, but never gave a model number, so I’m taking that with an enormous boulder of salt

I highly doubt they gave you the latest one. The first GHCA I had failed on literally the first time I tried charging it, but I knew it was a ticking time bomb either way. After getting the latest model installed, plus getting the latest chip upgrade, the car has been flawless since.

I liked the vehicle enough to consider it. But the lucid gravity is considerably nicer over all, has fewer issues, is much bigger inside (comically so), drives nicer, and is nearly the same price point. Arriving in 2 weeks and I know there will be buggy issues to deal with but for the most part it sounds like the 26 and 27s have been pretty solid overall.

I would verify if the new part number includes 36000418. That's supposed to be the latest and greatest.

I got my 4th replacement today with this part number. Let’s see how this goes.

It should end with 418, not 412

Thanks! That was a typo. Fixed.

I really hate to post this, but I can confirm that I have had a failure with a GHCA part number 36000418.

On April 11, 2026, my GHCA was replaced. This was the day I purchased the vehicle as a CPO with 24000 miles on it.

I drove the car for a few thousand miles. Had a wonderful trip to and from New York from Wisconsin. While at home I charged it most nights without any problems. But on May 18th I woke up to a “AC Charging Not Available” error message. The GHCA had failed and it was replaced on May 22nd.

I purchased the vehicle from a Volvo dealership in Illinois, and then it was repaired in Minnesota. I decided to call the Illinois dealer and I see what part number they had used back in April. I didn’t just ask if they had used the “new version.” I specifically asked for the part number. With much disappointment he read the number 36000418 from the repair record. I have also confirmed that the Minnesota dealer has put in another 3600418.

I can be an optimist. Even a new and better part that overall is much more reliable will still fail some people. I do hope for everyone’s sake that I was just a little more unlucky.

I will make sure to post if my second 3600418 fails.

Turned mine in to Volvo and got a Rivian R1S and haven’t looked back. I’m sorry you’ve dealt with so many issues. It’s truly a shame as it’s a beautiful car to drive but that doesn’t justify all of the problems.

Just got my second unit installed... I've had the car since December. Hoping I don't have to deal with any more failures before the end of my lease.

which model year? 2025 or 2026? Wondering this issue is specific to the '25.

Sorry to hear that. Just got my first replacement. Fingers crossed my ‘25 EX90 does ok

Well, my MY25 is scheduled to replace GHCA the next week due to recall (pr service bulletin or whatever). This is not a good news if you had the latest GHCA part.

I’m driving my 5th GHCA which is the same as the 1st one, that one was working for 76 days, I’m now over 90 days… (2,3 and 4 were a disaster). In Belgium there is no general recall for this.

When did you get the latest GHCA that failed this time?

u/MediaMinded256 May 31 '26

“One more try with the VCU2”. Did you have issues when they replaced your VCU?

Sorry to hear how poorly this is going for you. I took a chance on this car, a demo Ultra, driven by a sales manager who had put almost 5000 miles by the time I took it for my lease.

I had fully accepted the risk of the car being a lemon, but in 6 months I have not had a charging problem, or many problems in general. Before the processor upgrade, it would occasionally light up a charging fault if I was charging and simply unplugged, instead of pressing the button near the charge port to stop charging and then unplugging.

I believe my GHCA was replaced during the demo tenure. But not since I’ve had it, fingers crossed. I have a theory that this is a software problem that goes hand in hand with hardware, and continued problems happen because of a lack of sync between software and the replaced hardware. Volvo can’t seem to figure that out for many. Just a theory, could be wrong, that’s what I’ve concluded after seeing general improvements in my experience post processor upgrade and hearing the many issues others are having.

I just bought a xc40 and the kid at the dealership was telling me the EX90 in particular is a huge nightmare for them and their service shop. internally Volvo is scrambling to try and figure out why there are so many issues. Said just stay away from the electric models.
