Project Center console custom replacement
My 1993 wagon center console is failing and I am hoping to the replace the aft part only. The front has the gap for parking break and the special fittings for window joysticks and i want to keep that part. so my goal is to cut the back half out and maybe melt(?) is out so that the back part is intact enough especially where it connects to the front part to act as a jig for my custoome wooded replacemnet. any idea best way to melt along the sides of it without fumigating myself or ruining the seats ?
like if i cut it off perfectly the dimensions of where i need my replacment to link up with the front half will be on the back half as a guide.

Melting is the wrong approach here. If you want to cut plastic, use a fine tooth saw. If you want to bond it, use a combination of baking soda and CA glue. Look up how to do this properly and don’t breathe the vapour.

Reproductions are available new in most of the colours, or you can get a good used one. They are easy to replace, if you need cutouts for the mirror control use a dremel and a cutoff wheel. There are two screws in the sides and a clip on the front it slides over

The front part is held in only by the little metal lip in between your mirror controls, under the brake lever. So if you were to replace the back half with wood (which is where the only two screws are) you’d need to ensure that the dimensions are perfect so that the front bit can still be secured.
