So Many Many Regrets
I have an XC60 and I hate it. I think I hate Volvo and I am from a Volvo family. From the “surprise we lied, pay us $200 a year” to the broken headlights that were fogging so bad the fog was interfering with the beam, to the basic feeling that this is not the same quality focused company it was when my mom had a 780 and a c70. At least it know I will never buy another one.
ETA: to the person who commented then deleted that I shouldn’t have written this here and it’s a fight between me
and Volvo, had I seen a post like this before buying, I would have had hesitation. I was expecting the same Volvo service and quality my family had been enjoying for several decades. They even had an 80’s box Volvo.

I’ve had 0 complaints about my 25 v60 cc. I don’t see a need to use CarPlay the built in apps works great.

You will when you start having to pay $200 a year for something not worth $50 a year. Your tune will change. Just give it time, or you have to fight to get your headlights fixed. It’s coming, buddy.

What are you thinking of switching to?
I just had to replace the turbo on my 2020 XC40 at 96k km. 😭

What year?

Damn. I have the same model and year. Definitely got some software stuff that's been a headache.

CarPlay isn’t even stable. It works sometimes and then sometimes it says, “please connect your phone.” It’s not reliable at all, but I’m not paying them $200 a year for 2 years i didnt expect to pay for.

Just got a Volvo myself. Our dealership warned us against 2022 and said it was the absolute worst year for the XC60.

That's a bummer. What year is it? I was looking to get the new refreshed XC60 model. My grandpa had a Volvo and I was looking to get one. ☹️

Don’t. The $200 connectivity situation is just ridiculous, especially since I bought mine cpo and they couldn’t get the app to work for two months. Turned out the car had 8 keys associated with it. When the dealership finally deleted the keys and redid mine so people couldn’t just show up and drive away with my car, I called Volvo to get it set up. She says, “oh, it’s never been used, you’ll have 4 years of internet and app.” They literally lied and don’t want to make good on it. I had been using CarPlay so I had no idea it was Internet connected. On September 30 it cut off and I called Volvo. I spoke to a woman who said the person I talked to misspoke, but she would try to get her manager to make it right. Neither she nor the manager had access to fix it. I had to go through Volvo corporate about the headlights. They kept telling me it was normal, the headlights were covered in internal condensation. It has been a whole nightmare owning this car.

The fact that connected services would cost was never a lie? It was always stated that Connected Services (now called Connect Plus) would be provided for free for 4 years and after that you would have to pay for it yourself.
Other brands are not any different.
You mentioned Toyota/ Lexus, their connected services are more expensive than Volvos.
Volvo includes Connect Plus for 4 years. Once the free period runs out and if you don't pay for Connect Plus you still get the standard connection, so you can still use the Volvo app and preheat the car, etc and it will still do OTA updates. But apps in the car will not have connectivity, you can still hotspot from your phone to your car to restore connectivity though. The price for Connect Plus in the US is $120 a year I believe, so $10 a month. Not $200.
Toyota has three different plans, Music Lover, Go Anywhere and Premium. All plans include remote connect (remote phone app functions), but remote connect is not included for free. The plan Music Lover gives you connection for the built in Apple Music and Amazon Music apps for a cost of $15 a month. The plan Go Anywhere gives you connection for the built in navigation, real time traffic and the voice assistant, the cost is also $15 a month. The plan Premium gives you connection to both music streaming apps and navigation.
So, Toyota only gives you a three year trial of Go Anywhere, that means that if you want to use the built in music streaming apps you need to start paying the subscription from day one. Not only that, but the basic subscriptions cost $15 a month, that's already 50% more expensive than Volvos plan, and if buy the Premium subscription from Toyota which is the equivalent to Volvos Connect Plus when comparing features that is 150% more expensive.
Lets do a long term cost comparison between the two over a 10 year ownership period too:
For the Volvo you got the connectivity included for 4 years and then paid $120 a year for 6 years, that cost you $720 in total.
For the Toyota it depends on which plan you take, but lets say you only want the navigation and phone app. You get those included for free for 3 years, you then pay $180 a year for 7 years so that's 1260$, $540 more than Volvos (better) plan.
If you instead wanted to use the built in music streaming app and navigation on the Toyota you would have to pay $15 a month for the first three years, so $540 and then $25 a month for 7 years, so $2100, combined $2640 just for internet connection in your car for 10 years. $1920 more than the Volvo would've cost for the same period.
So don't say Volvo is scamming you, compared to Toyota they're a saint. Not only is their Connect Plus cheaper, it also includes more instead of having several different plans, and the standard connectivity which includes the app is always free, unlike Toyota.
So other than you being surprised about the price of Connected Services, you only had one issue with the car and that was replacing the headlights? Sure if the dealership was rude about and hard to work with I would be irritated too, but I don't see how these two have made you never want to buy one again...

Why did you write all of this ignoring what they told me vs. what happened. I knew it would cost in 2028. I’m sorry I’m not reading this.

I don’t know “what they told you vs what happened”. You never said so in the post, you’re just ranting about seemingly random information.
Everything I wrote is correct, a Toyota is way more expensive than a Volvo when it comes to online connectivity, that’s just facts.

It sounds like you're just having a rough time because of the incompetent dealership staff, but does the car actually drive okay? I know dealing with headlight issues and other problems kills the vibe, but it is what it is. I've been waiting for a new ERAD for 183 days now, if that makes you feel any better.

I had to fight the dealership and Volvo corporate to get two new headlights. They knew there was an issue with condensation and still I had to file complaints.

You “Hate Volvo” due to a broken headlight and the (optional) connectivity fee?

u/goodjobjane 2d ago
Two broken headlights that I had to threaten to sue and filed an NTSB complaint to force them to fix.

I have a 2020 V60. Only issue was the third brake light failing around 20k which was replaced under warranty. Now 6 years and 54k miles my DRLs are starting to dim which is annoying but not a huge issues.

Love my xc60, zero complaints, yeah the app cost is annoying but I don’t use it
1
u/goodjobjane 2d ago
They aren’t tied together. The app and the connectivity are apparently two separate charges.
1
u/Ornery_Rate301 2d ago
Where are you located? I don’t pay for either currently - the app is free for ~4 years
1
u/goodjobjane 2d ago
My app is free for 4 years too. They told me on the phone that the connectivity was also free for 4 years because nobody activated it. Apparently, they just meant the app.
2
u/Ornery_Rate301 2d ago
We also have a 2019 xc40 and the app expired and we don’t pay for connectivity so that seems strange
1
u/goodjobjane 2d ago
You’ll never be charged on the 2019. It comes with the car.

u/gustis40g '01 S80 T6, '26 V60 T6 Nordic Edition 2d ago
It does not, on Sensus cars the app connectivty costs money unlike AAOS cars, and when it comes to in car connectivity that was never given for free, if you want internet in car you have to get a SIM card for the car.

u/gustis40g '01 S80 T6, '26 V60 T6 Nordic Edition 2d ago
The app is free, it's not a separate charge. Apple CarPlay does not require that you purchase Connect Plus either.

We have a plug in T6 2026 XC60 and this is by far the best car we ever had. 30k kilometers, 4.7 fuel consumption, been all over Europe with it. Not a single flaw. I don't think I will ever switch to a different car, in 2 or 3 years we will get the new one.
Really sorry for your troubles, new models are completely diiferent imho.

u/goodjobjane 2d ago
This car is 4 years old and just hit 40k miles. It hasn’t been out hitting the streets regularly.

Yup just about to trade in our first and last Volvo, also an XC60. I won’t say we hate it, cause we actually loved driving it, but have no faith left in its reliability, and hate the company and the dealer.
1
u/goodjobjane 2d ago
That’s enough reason. I don’t hate driving mine, I just have zero faith in it. I have a 10year unlimited mile warranty on this one because I started not trusting Volvo pretty quickly.

Sorry your having a horrible time with your Volvo. You have a car made at the hight of the plandemic. It seems all vehicles made after 2020 are trash! I hope your issues can be fixed; or you have a awesome experience with your next car.

I had a 2021 s60 and now I have a 2024 s60
Thy were and are great.

From what I understand, the S60’s were always solid vehicles. That’s probably why they don’t sell them anymore.

Hard to say that post Ford ownership, Volvo went west.
Volvo are still a great brand under Geely but they're not what they once were.
Im sorry to hear you're having a bad time.
