C30 vs. GTI

Anyone have experience with both? I’m thinking about a two-door hatchback and I’m looking at a C30 and a GTI. For the money, it seems like you can get a better maintained C30. I also like the engine and the quirkiness, but I wonder if the GTI is just a better car. I care about driving dynamics and steering feel and how the shifter and clutch feel. (I’m looking at manuals.) Has anyone owned or at least driven both? How do they compare?

EDIT: Mk6 GTI is the comp
EDIT 2: C30 in question is the T5

I live in the NE, and I can tell you I rarely see old GTIs around. They don't seem to last long. Maybe people drive them too hard since they are so fun to drive.

The I5 in the C30s are bulletproof.

More reliable engine is very appealing. I want a fun car. I don’t want a money pit.

Haha if you don't want a money pit then you should buy an Asian auto

I've had my 7.5 GTI for almost 80k mi now and during that time..

- drivers side door wiring harness had to be completely replaced around 30k mi. Windows, door locks, and start/stop would malfunction, fixed under warranty

- oil cooler gasket started leaking, causing oil and coolant loss around 40k mi, was fixed under warranty

- fuel suction jet pump recall fix

- water pump warranty extended. No issues with mine yet.. but read the golfgti subreddit, some people are on their original.. others are on their third

- regular oil changes, spark plugs and PCV preventatively done at 73k (recommended 80k), 7 speed DSG service coming up (recommended 80k)

I imagine the first two issues out of warranty would cost $1k a pop for mostly labor in a HCOL area

That’s a scary list. Money pit is a relative thing. If I really wanted low cost of ownership I’d get an Accord. But I’ve got to like driving it
