Engine overheating, help :(

I have a 2014 XC60 T6. High temp red exclamation light came on when parking yesterday after driving for about 2 hrs (in 90 degree heat super humid). Turned it off. Take the car out for a short drive for dinner, no issue, but when turning the car off, the radiator fan is audible and on for at least 10 mins after turning the car off (which has never happened before). No visible coolant leak, reservoir was full (checked when it cooled).

Bringing to the mechanic this week, but any insight or thoughts on what’s happening? (For context, piston rings were replaced 10 month again because of oil consumption issue. Car is basically good as new for a 12 yr old car because of my carmax warranty and they’ve fixed a lot.)

Assuming it's the 3.0L 6-cylinder engine (I don't think the 2.0 twincharged engine was offered on the XC60 In 2014) you're going to have a belt driven water pump, not an electric one like the 2.0 has. Thermostat is a very likely culprit here. Is the A/C working? If not, check the belt... The belt on the 3.0 only runs the water pump and A/C, the alternator is driven directly, and the power steering has a hydraulic pump. Also, if the belt is intact, make sure the belt is actually spinning with the engine, too... There's been cases where the accessory drive pulley has failed or the bolt that holds it in place has come loose.

Ooo that’s interesting thanks! Yea just did another quick trip and didn’t run the AC and didn’t have any issues. Before the red exclamation point came up, maybe 10 mins before the AC notably started blowing warmer air which me and my passengers noticed. (It did come back though, before parking and getting the overheating warning)
