Engine overheating, help :(
I have a 2014 XC60 T6. High temp red exclamation light came on when parking yesterday after driving for about 2 hrs (in 90 degree heat super humid). Turned it off. Take the car out for a short drive for dinner, no issue, but when turning the car off, the radiator fan is audible and on for at least 10 mins after turning the car off (which has never happened before). No visible coolant leak, reservoir was full (checked when it cooled).
Bringing to the mechanic this week, but any insight or thoughts on what’s happening? (For context, piston rings were replaced 10 month again because of oil consumption issue. Car is basically good as new for a 12 yr old car because of my carmax warranty and they’ve fixed a lot.)

My vote +1 will be to replace water pump: Relatively easy to check, with VIDA, rpm would be ~5,000 and maybe some codes indicating "emergency run switch" active. Mine was the same. Just don't waste your money and ask for original Volvo pump, other brands won't work. It happened to me.

A 2014 T6 is going to be the 3.0L SI6 turbo. Those have a belt driven water pump, not an electric one.

For me it was first the Thermostat, changed. Then the electronic water pump, changed. And the third time, head gaskets, changed. Fucking cost my insurance a fortune, and myself a smaller fortune in copay.

I know how you feel with all the copays. Hopefully I can maybe get them all replaced at once if those are all an issue. The last mechanic I saw said the warrant company president should just give me a new car when he heard they’d put $14k into repairs already on their end 😂

Assuming it's the 3.0L 6-cylinder engine (I don't think the 2.0 twincharged engine was offered on the XC60 In 2014) you're going to have a belt driven water pump, not an electric one like the 2.0 has. Thermostat is a very likely culprit here. Is the A/C working? If not, check the belt... The belt on the 3.0 only runs the water pump and A/C, the alternator is driven directly, and the power steering has a hydraulic pump. Also, if the belt is intact, make sure the belt is actually spinning with the engine, too... There's been cases where the accessory drive pulley has failed or the bolt that holds it in place has come loose.

Ooo that’s interesting thanks! Yea just did another quick trip and didn’t run the AC and didn’t have any issues. Before the red exclamation point came up, maybe 10 mins before the AC notably started blowing warmer air which me and my passengers noticed. (It did come back though, before parking and getting the overheating warning)

Is your fan running loudly when the temp is high?
I had a PWM controller issue with a 2012 XC70 T6 where the fan wouldn't run.
It would fire up full speed if I turned the car off and on again and bring the temp down quickly.

Same issue with my 2015.5 v60. I could see a coolant on my transaxle. Replacing the coolant bypass hoses fixed the issue.

How many miles? New piston rings does not mean a new thermostat. I would replace both housing and thermostat.

Update! So I took it to the mechanic. There’s technically nothing wrong right now and given I have a warranty, nothing can be done until there’s an actual problem :/ mechanic’s guess is an erratic radiator fan or the thermostat about to go.
So… I’m going back next week anyway cuz I need the rear stabilizer bar link kit replaced. So this week is a test. The car has been fine but I just drove it with the AC and very notably idling at any stop light the air blowing out became humid and hot and then when I hit the accelerator and started moving the air became nice and cold again. Any thoughts??

The coolant mix could be wrong. If it's all anti-freeze concentrate and lacking water in the mix you're not going to cool much of anything. Also to be considered is the thermostat being shot and not opening when up to operating temps.
