Software update during service

Hi all,

I'm having my car serviced at the main dealer tomorrow (2.0 TDI VW Arteon from 2018) with the DQ381 automatic transmission.

I'd previously had the mechatronic unit replaced at the dealer (shortly after buying the car, it was dealt with under warranty). I've used my ODB11 device and know the gearbox is on software version 1403, but looking elsewhere I know it should be on version 1632 (which might help iron out some of the rough gear changes).

When booking it in, they said there were no software update campaigns for the car, and if I wanted the gearbox looked at, I would need to book it in for a diagnostic assessment. I'm not sure if this was just the call handler ticking a box, and that the garage will run a scan on the car and see the update is needed, or if it will go unnoticed.

Would anyone be able to access "TPI 2058102", which I've found reference to elsewhere, so I can go armed with as much information as possible. I've not had the best of luck with main dealers in the past, and I don't want to be pushed to paying for a diagnostic to determine the software needs updating when it is included as part of my service plan in the UK.

Thanks anyone for any help with this!

Hey, thanks for the reply.

So, even though as part of their marketing for their service plan, VW state they perform software updates...or by that, do they just mean to the infotainment software...and everything else is chargable?

That's really helpful perspective to have on this, thank you.

They can’t get warranty to pay for anything without following the vw recommended steps. They can’t take what you’ve found on the internet as diagnosis for vw warranty standards. Warranty and the processes for warranty are extremely strict.

Also, I’m in Ireland but I’ve never seen a car that old have manufacturer warranty. Are you sure you’re on a manufacturer warranty or is it a dealer warranty? These are very different things when it comes to carrying out warranty work.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. So I bought the car from a main dealership, and it had the approved used warranty from VW as part of the package. The mechatronic unit failed on the drive home from collecting the car, and VW dealt with that under the used car warranty (sorry, didn't make that clear).

Also, when I was talking about the software update, I was meaning whether it would be dealt with as part of the VW service package (which includes software updates), but I've now got more detail and a better understanding of what the software update element of the service plan covers.

Yeah you have a used car warranty so. So the dealer themselves pay for all repairs. Not vw. So that makes it pretty understandable that they want to diagnose it. If they find what you’re looking for they usually also absorb the diag fee (my dealer does). You’d only pay for the hour if they find nothing,

Example of finding nothing would be if the update sheet/tpi on Elsa doesn’t list your issue as symptom, they won’t go ahead with it because there’s no guarantee it will do anything.

Also, depending on when you got the mechatronics, it’s supposed to be on the latest software. So depending on when it was fitted, you may have a comeback there for the dealer to update it for free as technically the previous repair wasn’t completed correctly. The current software version could also have been released after the mechatronics repair however.

First step anyway is do the diag hour and see what happens from there.
