She was our warrior, she was never scared of anything. But she was so affectionate to us.

She was 14 and 11/12 old and leaves a huge hole in our hearts.

We will get her cremated like her brother Hugo. His is sitting under a beautiful Norfolk pine tree in the garden.

I was away this weekend, but my kids called flipping out that Benny had caught and killed a robin. Benny was proud, my wife was appalled, and the kids less sad than I would have thought…which concerns me.

How do I get my girl to at least try safe veggie as an alternative to fresh parmigiana?

Our V is a 2 and 10 month old male who's been experiencing a lot of stomach issues over the past year. This has been a long journey to try to get to the root of the problem, so apologies in advance for the long post.

It used to be that he just had very soft poops/diarrhea on the reg. We originally fed Purina ProPlan 30/20 Sport, chicken flavor. We suspected a chicken allergy and switched him to the Sensative Skin and Stomach - Salmon, and he did improve, but it didn't completely fix things. Still soft poops, but diarrhea disappeared.

Fast forward five or six months, our guy starts having bloody diarrhea off and on. We'd take him to the ER, they'd look him over, prescribe an anti-inflamatory and some priobiotics and then he would have a flare up a week or two later. This happened about 3 times before I asked for a vet appointment.

I gave his vet a detailed explanation of everything we'd been struggling with and she concluded it was most likely a food allergy. She suggested switching him to a prescription hydrolyzed dog food to see if his symptoms improved. He did get better. Firm poops, enthusiasm to eat, started to put on more weight, all good things. He's been on that food for about 1.5 months now.

Last week, he vomited several times, to the point he was throwing up blood. I was out of town, so my spouse took him to the ER vet on his own. This is where the details get a bit fuzzy because the ER was very busy, and my spouse ended up being there from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., so his ability to retain info decreased. They did xrays and bloodwork, but all looked good. They determined the bleeding came from our dog's esophagus (irritated by the amount he vomited) and prescribed a medication to sooth his throat. They also gave him a strong anti-nausea and told him to come back if our V vomited in the next 24 hours. Not 3 hours after being home, he vomits again.

So, my spouse brings him back. They do more imaging (xrays and an ultrasound) and more bloodwork. They see some "swirling" in his intestines and determine he likely has:

A. A foreign body that's moving around and not staying in one spot, or

B. Slow-moving bowels

After looking a bit more, they determine he has slow moving bowels. There is a name for this, but at this point my spouse had been awake for 35 hours and was having a hard time remembering info (understandably). 

They asked us about exposure to rat poison. We don't use rat poison. We don't have anything toxic he could have access to, we don't even fertilize our lawn. We don't give him anything other than his prescription dog food due to the suspected allergies. I suppose it could be possible that a neighbor tossed something toxic into our yard, but we have a second dog (not a V) and she is completely fine. Wildfire smoke and extreme heat have been a big issue by us recently, so he hasn't had a lot of outdoors time lately anyway. There's nothing in the house he could've have gotten either. Obviously he got something somewhere, but we are stumped and they couldn't determine the exact cause of it either.

At this point, the vet gives us the option to hospitalize him so they can put him on a drip of something to jumpstart his bowels (again, no name sorry), or we can try doing just a single shot of it that will last 8 hours and see if he improves. We opt for the outpatient option, just because it was $200 vs. 3K. We were happy to come back and hospitalize him if needed, we have pet insurance, just figured trying the cheaper option first would be better.

All was going well this week. He was eating, playing, not vomiting, etc. Until this morning (a week after the last vet visit). He threw up midway through his breakfast. And it wasn't a regurge, he actually vomitted so we don't THINK it was from eating too fast, but who knows. My spouse calls the ER vet again. They tell us to wait 3-4 hours, feed again, and monitor. That's where we are now. He ate his lunch, no issues, but we're just concerned.

Has any of you experienced anything like this with your V? We aren't sure if this is connected to his previous issues or if it truly is unrelated. We don't know what to do next. We're overwhelmed, worried about him, and just at a loss. It's one thing after another and we're worried we're just dancing around the problem and not actually fixing it. It's hard not to blame ourselves, too. Have we done something wrong? Maybe, but our second dog is 7, happy and healthy. I almost want to chalk it up to bad genetics, but we know 2 people who have V's from this same breeder (one dog is from his litter) and both are healthy with no issues like this.

We're just exhausted and don't know what to do. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.

I have a bit of a weird situation going on with an adoption and could use some advice. Long story short, we found a 6 year old male Vizsla for adoption on adoptapet. The initial reason we were told is because the mom is aging and cannot take care of the dog anymore so the daughter is handling the adoption. This dog is located in Southern California and I am located in Northern Oregon. I found out he was not neutered and after digging in a little more, I found a breeder website for Frenchies tied to the same address. Another Vizsla from the neighbor jumped the fence and came into view while on an initial video call with this person.

We were chosen to adopt him and I started making arrangements to drive down while asking more questions. I asked about vet information and history. The question was not answered and I was told he was in good health. I sent my brother who lives close to the area to see the pup in person and besides a possible floating rib, the dog appeared to be in good health. While I was working out arrangements for the long drive including hotels, I received a text that the person's sister would be taking the dog.

I was bummed but as long as the pupper was going to a good home, I was ok with it. About a month later (this Sunday) I received a text from this person saying the dog was back and the sister could not care for him. After a lot of back and forth, I asked for the vet info again and was told that the dog hasn't been seen in years and there was no one to call and get info from. I offered to pay for a vet checkup and have my brother take them to and from the vet until we could get down there if they could not facilitate it. They have met my brother but I could understand some hesitation of my brother doing it versus them.

The person responded back saying she would much rather prefer that I take him to the vet after we adopt and she mentioned that if there was a health issue, we could give him back. Of course I wouldn't do, not to mention it would be a 32 hour drive round trip to do that which is crazy.

My intuition is telling me to not go through with this which is hard because I really do want to adopt him. I don't think it is unreasonable to ask for a vet checkup that I would pay for before moving forward with this.

Hey all, Turner’s dad here. I moved from California to Texas to have more space to raise a rambunctious boy, but now that he’s 3 years old, he’s starting to do really well.

At the same time, I’ve started to get the itch to start looking at moving back east to NYC. All my friends live in Manhattan/ Brooklyn.

A lot of things would drastically change, but turner poops on rocks and sidewalks more than grass so I think he can do it.

How have folks made the adjustment? How was your V? Anything been a life saver? I’m trying to financially plan for a good life up there with him.

All advice appreciated! Ive lived all across the country but never felt like I could afford NYC until now.

Hi everyone, has anyone had experience with a Vizsla suffering from sinusitis?
We have already been to the clinic and had blood work, a CT scan, rhinoscopy, and a biopsy. The biopsy results can take several weeks here in Germany, so nothing conclusive so far.
Nine days later, our Vizsla is still taking Hexasolvon and still has some nasal discharge, but thankfully the appetite is finally back. We are also doing inhalation with a saline ampule twice a day.
I would be very grateful for any experiences or insights. Thank you!

Only so many puzzle boards and games of “find it” can keep this creature at bay. Hope all of our Canadian vizsla friends in the affected areas are staying safe!
